Apple iPhone 8 : Review

As the iPhone lives up 10 years of its existence and Evolves into a new avatar, we discuss our experience immediately after getting our hands on the coveted phone. If Apple had plans for an iPhone X (mistakenly pronounced at Apple iPhone 10), why bother launching iPhone 8? Strangely, as the Apple iPhone 8 was announced, within minutes it turned from latest model to an older model with announcement of iPhone X.

First off, what’s new and how iPhone8 is better than iPhone7 :

  • Apple iPhone 8 is tad different in dimensions as compared to iPhone 7 and it weighs 10 grams more at 148g (5.22 oz)
  • While the screen size and resolutions remain similar, the iPhone 8 scores with Hex-core (2x Monsoon & 4x Mistral) CPU over quad-core CPU in iPhone 7for better spectrum performance
  • As Apple upgraded CPU, they have come up with Apple A11 Bionic chipset to complement the faster CPU
  • A better 3 core graphics Apple GPU, that delivers better performance over the previous 6 core PowerVR Series7XT GPU
  • Minimum internal memory now starts at 64GB rather than 32 GB models
  • Bluetooth 5.0 for better spectrum coverage
  • Has an advanced Solid State button with tactile feedback
  • The iPhone 8 sports a Fast Charging battery, however it lacks the juice. Iphone 8 battery is only 1821 mAh (Li-ion battery), while iPhone 7 has 1960 mAh battery.
  • The new iOS 11 is riding on great expectations to optimize batttery life and deliver eual if not better battery life

BODY: The first time you hold the iPhone 8, you’ll only feel the money you spent upgrading over iPhone 7. Yup! there’s nothing new to the touch and feel. The new casing is much more Glass, glossy and slippery. Now you have glass on both front and rear, meaning you can now even crack the rear glass if your phone suffers an accident. As per adverts, it is supposed to be the most durable glass, yet it is still glass and it will crack. Then again you’ll get a case for it, so nothing new in this aspect.

More about the dimensions, Apple appears to have stuck itself to same form factor since iPhone 6/6s. Iphone 8 maintains dimensions at 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.3 mm, same as iPhone 6/6s and iPhone 7. And those who prefer phablets, can have the iPhone 8 Plus sized at 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.5 mm.

Apple iPhone 8 has the same rounded edges and volume rocker buttons, power button, ringer notch as the iPhone 7. The coveted Home Button continues to have tactile feedback, gives out mild vibrations as you press down on the solid-state button. You’ll already know how it feels if you have used iPhone 7.

This is the second iPhone to be splash / water resistant. It has IP67 rating. So you should be fully protected from dust and can safely submerge the iPhone 8 in 1m deep water for up to 30 minutes. Samsung Galaxy S8 has IP68 rating, letting it stay unscathed at 1.5 m deep water.

DISPLAY: The iPhone 8 features Apple’s Retina HD display with wide color and 3D Touch and it has 4.7 inches screen size. The maximum screen resolution is 1334 x 750 pixels. Images are very clear with best in class color outputs. A perfect screen size with a perfect clarity is what you get in this combo. Moreover the immaculately colored and designed iOS 11 icons are a treat on this screen.

True Tone technology used in the already-dazzling display adjusts the white balance to match the lighting around the phone. That’s adaptive in true sense.

Screen to body ratio, however, remains low at 65.4% due to big bezels on top and bottom of the screen. It is the same as iPhone 7 but seems to be outdated in comparison to competition where bezels re almost extinct.

UNDER THE HOOD: The Apple iPhone 8 is powered by Apple’s latest A11 Bionic chipset with 6 cores. The most eye catching features of the Hexa-core processor is that it has two Monsoon and 4 Mistral cores. Meaning, during the idle times, only two high-efficiency cores are getting battery power, while others only kick in when you have heavy processing work to do. This elongates the battery life and controls excessive phone heating. I personally have not noticed phone getting heated up excessively under normal usage. Its aluminum body is perhaps another reason why it remains cool.

MEMORY: Apple iPhone 8 still continues to sport only 2 GB of RAM, while iPhone 8 Plus has 3GB, similar to iPhone 7 and 7 Plus versions. As far as the internal memory goes, the iPhone 8 has doubled the capacity of iPhone 7 and now comes in only two options i.e. 64GB and 256GB. 2GB RAM does mar the phone’s performance at times, however those are indeed very crucial times when you multi-task in extreme conditions, which only power users are bound to face. The iOS 10 does handle memory usage efficiently. I do feel, the 3GB RAM for iPhone 8 should not have been missed.

SOUND: The 3.5 mm headphone jack is gone and does not seem to return to the iPhone series. The external speakers on the phone deliver stereo sounds, one at the bottom and one at the top. Better and louder sound over any previous iPhone. Lesser known brands are getting Dolby certifications, while iPhone barely managed to get twin stereo speakers. The phone also has an increased dynamic range though.

CAMERA: Remember those Shot on iPhone adverts? Well, they are here to stay for iPhone 8 too. As the phone has better low light capture capacities over iPhone 6s. It also has better flash than iPhone 6s which gives 50% more light. iPhone 8 Plus has two cameras that work as one.

The camera has an added optical image stabilization feature which makes it more practical for action shots. The ƒ/1.8 aperture combined with better flash gives better video and image captures in low light. Things are a notch up than previous iPhone but they aren’t really pushing the envelope this time. The iPhone 8 lets you shoot in 4K resolution with over 8 million pixels. Another worth mentioning feature in the camera is the slow-motion support in 1080p and 720p HD.

BATTERY: A smaller capacity battery, combined with efficient iOS and less power consuming chipset, leave you with upto 12 hours of usage. For normal daily use it leads upto 16 hours.

The new striking feature s the Qi wireless charging. So no more wire chargers to eb attached to the phone for charging. The iPhone 8 charges faster than the iPhone 7, it goes past 50% in approx 30 minutes. If you get yourself wireless charging pad accessory, it will also charge up your Apple Watch and Air pods.

The Non-removable Li-Ion 1821 mAh battery is decently suited for 4.7 inch screen. While the competition has crossed the bar and achieved 2000 mAh power, a few are reaching upto 3000 mAh, that’s a mind boggling number.

The signal reception on the iPhone 8 is very good as the antenna has been embedded antenna within the aluminum body enclosure. So that was my first-hand experience with the Apple iPhone 8. Do share your views on social networks which you follow us on.
