Enable iPhone Internet Tethering

iPhone officially, doesn’t support Internet Tethering on all models. But here is a process that allows you to use your iPhone as a Wireless modem to share its Internet connection with a computer via WiFi, USB cable or Bluetooth interface on iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS on anyFirmware: 3.0 or Firmware 3.1.2

The app that we are going to use is called MyWi

Main Features of MyWi v3.1.8:

  • Create WiFi Hotspot to connect mutiple laptops or mobile devices to share your iPhone’’s internet connection
  • WEP Support.
  • Supports USB and Bluetooth Tethering as well
  • Uses less battery and much faster then PdaNet.
  • Shows  bandwith usage log.

Pre-requisites: Make sure your iPhone is jailbroken: Jailbreak, Unlock iPhone on 3.1.2

Step 1: Open Cydia, search for “MyWi” and install it. Install RockApp manually if it isn’t installed automatically with MyWi app.

Step 2: Now start RockApp and create a free Rock ID, sign-in and you should probably, now see an update to MyWi app. Restart your iPhone after the update.

Step 3: Open MyWi app and turn on the option for USB/Bluetooth tethering.

Enable Internet Tethering on iPhone 3.1.2

Step 4: Navigate to Settings->General->Network->Internet Tethering and turn on the toggle for Internet Tethering.

That’s it! Ask me any question should you run into problem in enabling Tethering on your iPhone running firmware 3.1.2.

  1. I've got the app installed and can tether via wifi on Snow Leopard 10.6.2, but I can't figure out how to use USB to tether. I know how to enable it in MyWi, but I don't know how to get my Mac to use USB as the internet connection. I'm assuming it's obvious, but I'm obviously lost 🙂

          • Yeah, here's the sequence:
            1. Install MyWi via Rock my…
            2. Under MyWi, WiFi Tethering is off. Under Tethering “USB and Bluetooth” is on.
            3. In General Settings -> Network, Internet Tethering is On.
            4. To be safe, I also went to General Settings -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings (then repeated step 2 and 3).

I do not see USB or iPhone in my network settings. Have you verified this to work on OSX?

          • Now this is something strange. Can you try removing it and reinstalling [latest version]. It works for me using the exact same steps. Reinstalling, rebooting could be one way out.

  2. Reverse Tethering iPhone 3G/3Gs using USB

Step 1: Set up internet tethering on your iPhone.

Step 2: Plug you iPhone into your PC using the provided USB cable.

Step 3: Go to Settings>General>Network>Internet Tethering and switch it to “On.” Then it will prompt you for bluetooth or USB, select USB

Step 4: Go to network connections and you should see your LAN connection and a new connection that says “Apple Mobile Device Ethernet.” Simply highlight both connections, right click on one and select “Bridge.”

You will now be using your PC's internet connection on your iPhone! It works for Cydia App store, Facebook, Safari, ect ect.

Note: After terminating the connection you must delete the bridge and make a new one when you re-connect.
