Install Snow Leopard on PC [USB]

We had been into Mac OS X Installation on PC for a long time now. We ‘ve produced several flawless guides, though complexity may have varied.

With all your generous support, we are now able to produce the Easiest Guide to Install Snow Leopard on PC.

Update: You can upgrade to OS X 10.6.2 without any issues.

Before We Start:

  • This is “Retail method” for Installation [Most Trusted]
  • You need Supported hardware.
  • 8GB or Higher USB drive.
  • Snow Leopard Install DVD ($29 upgrade disk works) or an equivalent downloaded ISO.
  • Another Mac to prepare your thumb drive. You can also do this over a Hackintosh PC.
  • The EP45UD3P Snow Leopard install package: Download. This Automates all CommandLine work.

Step 1: Prepairing USB

First, we’re going to format usb thumb drive, later  copy the Snow Leopard DVD image to the thumb drive.

Watch the video in HD and fullscreen to get clearer look at the process.

After you restore the Snow Leopard install DVD to your thumb drive, all you’ve got to do is Run the EP45UD3P Snow Leopard.pkg file (download link above), select your thumb drive, and, let the installer will take care of all the work.

Step 2. Configuring BIOS:

You’ve got to make some small adjustments to your BIOS.

  • Boot Priority: Enable USB Boot, and set USB thumb drive the highest priority for Boot.
  • AHCI Mode: SATA RAID/AHCI Mode  should be set to AHCI
  • ACPI Power mode: Set it to S3(STR).

If you have trouble finding these settings, refer to the images below (click to enlarge) credits to Adam Pash.

Step 3: Installation

Now comes the easy part.

Restart PC, Make sure your prepared thumb drive is plugged into your PC. :

As shown in the Video: Boot into the Snow Leopard installer, format the hard drive you want to install Snow Leopard to (go to Utilities -> Disk Utility, then click on the drive, select 1 Partition, Mac OS X Journaled, give it a name, and make sure GUID Partition Table is set in the Options. After you Apply the new partition, go back to the installer and install like normal to that drive. When you reboot after the install completes, press the arrow keys at the graphical boot menu and select the drive you just installed Snow Leopard to.

Step 4. Minor Tweaks (optional but good to have)

You should have everything working by now. But here are few additional, optional steps to enhance your Experience:

1. Get Sound Fully working:

Sound isn’t entirely working yet. You may notice that sound actually does work in some instances, but not all. All you should actually need to do is open up the Sound preference pane in System Preferences (/Applications/System Preferences), click the Output tab, and change the output device to Built-in Line output (I haven’t tested with digital out, but it should work fine in theory).

2. Boot into Snow Leopard without USB Thumb Drive

Right now, your Hackintosh needs USB to boot. To boot from internal harddisk,  install the custom bootloader to your hard drive. Unzip EP45UD3P Snow Leopard.pkg zip file that you downloaded initially, run it and select the hard drive you’ve installed Snow Leopard to. Once the installer completes, you’ll no longer need your thumb drive plugged in to boot into Snow Leopard.

Bingo! You installed Snow Leopard on PC by the Easiest Way!

you can get macbook from one of your friends. The process takes couple of minutes.
Otherwise, you can install Leopard osx86 for this.

    • Question: did it boot once? Try safeboot with -x -v -cpu=1 option. If this works, Great!
By default, Snow Leopard, hence this method doesn't support Core i7, Max I tried was Intel Quad. However we can try a workaround. In Step 1 While creating The Install partitioin we have to introduce proper KEXTs (drivers) for your Motherboard. You can download those Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard kexts by referring to InsanelyMac's guide [It's fairly complex] http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?show
Try downloading those and add those KEXTs by referring to older guide: http://www.taranfx.com/blog/how-to-install-mac-
      This can get complex.

    • One More thing, I see that Kernel Panic is related with ACPI. It could be that you didn't set it as described. If you did, try different values. Secondly, -x -v -cpu=1 while booting, Thirdly unplug all USB devices and try rebooting without them.
Also let me know after what exactly did it happen.

          • Well, you might need administrator privileges, but i always forget them, since I am the administrator, and have turned off UAC. So i don't notice it.Try right-clicking Computer Management, and run with administrative privileges.
Besides you can always try using the full access recovery admin account built-in. This is a pretty dangerous way to gain administrator access though. Give it a google, i forgot how to enable it.

USBF: 296.270 [a bunch of letters and numbers] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device.

So I guess that means there is a problem with the USB drive. I tried it on both my USB ports but get the same message.

Any idea how to fix this? Any BIOS change needed?

Here you can set the bootpriority of all connected harddrives and bootable usb sticks.

One option I could not set in bios was this

    I only had S3(POS) not S3(STR)

Also I could not work out how to enter the options -x -v -cpu=1

When booting I got the screen up with the drive to install and if I press down I get several options there.

  22. Good Day Taran,

Kudos for all these great tutorials and I could say that they are easy to follow.

Would like to ask for your help as I am having issues with this USB method. This is my Notebook Specifications :

    Sony Vaio VGN-CR353
    Core2Duo Processor (2.1GHZ)
    4gb RAM
    ATI Radeon X2300

In this notebook I have set up a dual boot for Win7 and iPC OSx86 (10.5.6). iPC works fine except I could not crank the resolution further and WIFI 🙁

I followed these detailed steps for SL installation via USB but I keep getting the Restart your PC error. Attempted to boot into safe mode and I got the message systemshutdown false and some other strings of “directory not found” or something like that. So my question is, is there any other way to tweak the installer or the files from the patcher I guess and could it be that this is not compatible with my hardware? ( I suppose not, pretty much I have the generic ones. ) and lastly if you have any workaround to get my resolution and wifi fixed for iPC.

    Appreciate your help mate.

    Have a wonderful day ahead.

    boot0: testing
    boot0: testing

Nothing else happens. Any idea what I should do?

  30. Using this guide. If I wanted to dual boot windows 7 which I already have installed.
Would installing Osx as per this guide on a sepperate partition work? Would i still use guid partition table when i format the disk or should i use MBR if i want to dual boot.
If so let me just make sure I know what i am doing before I attempt.
After Os x I then have to boot with windows 7 CD and repair installation then add OSX entry with Easy BCD. Am I right?

    Thnx so much

  32. Hello,

I cannot get SL to boot the first time, shortly after Darwin loads I get a kernel panic message:
'Should have 2 threads but only found 3 for Die…'
    http://it.tinypic.com/r/25gzdwl/6

    Notes:
    – I have tried booting with -cpus=1, arch=i386 and -x but with no luck.
    – BIOS Settings: AHCI set, ACPI: S3(STR)

Strange, but when i enter the -cpus=1 setting I get exactly the same error message (2 threads but only found 3) as if nothing happened. But if I disable the 2nd core through BIOS, the message changes, and says: 'should have 1 thread but only found 2'! Link:
    http://it.tinypic.com/r/oqkiuh/6

    My Desktop PC setup:
-Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 2.6Ghz
    – Foxconn MB P43A01 with P45/P43 RevA3 chipset
    – 2GB RAM DDR2 400MHz
    – ATI Radeon HD 4770

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it!

You couldn't be more wrong. Not only does Snow Leopard support Pentium D processors, AMD and atom processors are supported as well using modded kernels. For Intel Processors use mach_kernel.432 for Snow Leopard 10.6, Use AnV_kernel.10.2.0 OR 10.2-BK for the 10.6.2 Snow Leopard Update, and legacy_kernel-10.3.0.pkg for the 10.3 Update. Do a search in Google for these kernels and quite spreading misinformation.

However when I try to use DiskUtility to restore the mounted Mac OS X Install DVD to the USB drive, by dragging the image in the left column over to the Source: field, it won't “stick” and so I cant do it. It tells me that it cannot restore the image because my iso needs to be imagescanned so I try to do that with disk utility but it either says 'resources temp unavailable' (Something like that) or “Unable to scan “Mac OS X Install DVD.iso (Invalid argument).” I don't know what to do…I cannot figure it out. • I also experienced this, the processor is running slow as molasses, which is why the cursor jumps, not to mention the inordinate amount of time to get to that point. I believe it has to do with the bootloader, but I could be wrong about this. I used the magic package in conjunction with some leopard disks and also experienced the dreadfully slow bootup which is what leads me to think its the bootloader, and no leopard distro did this on my dell studio 15 laptop before either. I am looking for flags that tackle this, theres a ratio flag I have seen but dont know if that will work, but leads me to think it will.

  51. All,

I think there is a safe/safer approach to testing if your hardware is compatible with OSX.
Install Vmware workstation on your windows box and install a virtual OSX. That should be telling if it will work at all.

Tomorrow Im getting a pc, first time in years, to try and install OSX on it, or run ESX4 on it so I can then run a virtual OSX at least.

first of all, thanks for your guide. Looks easier as anything i've found so far. Still, i need your help.

I prepared my thumb drive as described above and when i boot from it, i get the darwin loader screen. But shortly after I get a kernel panic, just the same as alexannic got: 'Should have 2 threads but only found 3 for Die…'

Now I wonder if – like in his case- my processor isn't supported. I do have an intel core 2 quad q9300 boxed. I thought this one actually was supported by SnowLeo. But please tell me if i'm wrong about that 😉

    My other hardware:

I tried this guide to enable AHCI http://www.ithinkdiff.com/how-to-enable-ahci-in… but it doesn't change a thing.
Do I have to flash my BIOS? Actually, I wanted to avoid that, don't want my PC ending up chrashed.

as many guys here I have an (somehow important) question. Your guide is pretty easy to understand even for non professionals.

But there still is one big question open: What is one supposed to do if he uses and usb external hard drive, like I do right now.

Always getting instant reboot. So do I have to set it active under windows for example and than under mac format it as GUID? Or the other way arroung (wich I guess wouldn't be possible bc Win probably wouldn't be able to recognize it).

PLS (!!!) give a litle support on that one 🙂

    • Yes, actually all you have to do is the following:
(Make sure you're running Linux Ubuntu 9.xx or 10.04)
      – Install hfsplus and hfsprogs via apt-get (Terminal) or use the Synaptic app manager and search for these packages.
      – Make sure your USB drive is inserted
      – Open Terminal via Apps and type “sudo -s” then type “df” to see were your flashdrive is mounted, or use Disk Utility to check (my disk shows up as “sdb”)
      – I prefer a graphical interface, so go to Disk Utility (in Ubuntu 10.04) and look for your device. Choose to format the whole device with “GUID”. (Do not create ANY extra partitions)
      – Now go back to Terminal and type: mkfs.hfsplus -v LinOSX -U 0 -G 0 /dev/sdb1
(Please note that “LinOSX” is the volume name, not the root identifyer. Also, the “1” is sdb1 refers to partition 1.
      – There should be two partitions on your flashdrive now. One is the EFI partition (which GUID uses) and the other should be HFS+. In Disk Utility, you should be able to see both of these partitions. Please note that you don't want to do anything to the EFI partition, as this is used by EFI.
      – Make sure the EFI partition is un-mounted, and then go and make sure your main sdb1 partition is mounted (yours may not show up as “sdb1”, just make sure to mount whatever ISN'T EFI)
      – Extract your OS X disk image (if it already isn't) to the “sdb1” partition of the flashdrive and add the Chemeleon bootloader along with additional stuff. (I tried doing this and using the EP45UD3P from Stella blog or whatever, and it didn't work. Use Chemeleon instead, it is much more stable and reliable.)
      – If you need help understanding how to copy the OS X Install DVD disk image in Linux Ubuntu, then check back or make a comment about it so I know.

I hope this got you a start, there are other ways, but this one is the easiest, this Linux and OS X are closer relatives than any other O/Ss are.

    • You must have AHCI on your MB for OS X SL to work. OS X SL needs AHCI mode so that it can access the hardware properly.

  75. I'm a noob, brand new to the Hackintosh world.

I didn't think this was going to work for me since I have a different mobo/vid card setup, but I tried it anyway. Kernel panic.

This is going to be a clean install of Snow Leopard on a single boot system. basically, just a a Mac running on non-Mac hardware. Going to keep trying with some of the other guides on here…

  76. Hey,
I followed another method to install Mac OS X onto a virtual machine so i could have the other mac os x to transfer files and data from. Now i want to run your setup on my machine, but when i get to the screen to start the install, the countdown gets to the end and then my computer restarts :/ i have tried it with the “-x”, “busratio=12”, “-v” and “-cpus=1/2” (only one number at a time). its annoying, and i have been pulling my hair out trying to figure this one out… anyone got any ideas?

    System specs
    Acer Aspire 5745g Laptop
    Intel i7 Core 720QM 1.6GHz
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
    4GB Ram
Currently running Windows 7 x64 Home Premium alongside partition for Mac to go on.

Sorry if thats too many details, just really really would love some help 🙂

  80. Hello. I am trying to dual boot my Fujitsu lifebook with Snow Leopard. I have an Intel Core Duo Processor (T6670). I have 2 GB DDR 3 RAM. The install went all the way through. Upon reboot, I chose the drive that I installed Snow Leopard on. I immediately get an error message can't find mach_kernel. I have been researching this for weeks and can not get anywhere. I have tried several commands in the terminal, half of which did not work. Some of the solutions I found, I was not able to do because I have no way to explore the drive. Also, and this may be the problem, the guide says to change the ACPI mode to S3 in the bios. I have used CPUIDs CPU-Z to verify that I have capability to do this; however, there is no option whatsoever in my bios to do this. I have searched every menu of my bios and the manual for it. The screenshots here look nothing like what I have in my bios. Please… any help would be appreciated. I am not ready to give up on my snow leopard install!!!

  84. OK, so after a couple of days of messing around with this I finally got Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on my HP G62-225DX laptop. I was getting the kernel panic saying cpu 0 blah blah 2 threads instead of 3… I had to do a couple of things differently from this guide though. On the bootable USB thumb drive I had to delete the DSDT.aml file that is in the Extra folder. I don’t know why deleting that prevented the kernel panics. Then I booted to the USB drive and when I got to the screen where you select the drive to boot from, push the TAB key then enter “cpus=1” (without quotes) while highlighting the USB drive from the list of drives. This allowed me to load the installation wizard off the thumb drive. My keyboard didn’t work at this point though so I had to use a USB keyboard.

  86. I’ve tried reading most of these comments. One thing that I didn’t see was an answer as to whether or not this is intended for an AMD computer. In the step where we click the program to install the packages it clearly says “Only for the MSI P45 Platinum with an NVIDIA Graphics card and Inter Core based CPU.”. Should we be trying to install on AMD computers?

  93. Hello,

I am using an amd phenom II x4 965 3.4GHz processor running on an mdi motherboard model: ms-7596 ver 1.3, 4GB of DDR3 ram 1333MHz…I have set the BIOS (ver 2.11 12082010) to boot to USB first, RAID Mode set to AHCI, and ACPI set to S3. I partitioned a 32GB usb thumb drive with a 10GB GUID partition table formatted with Mac OS Extended (journaled) file system. I am able to BEGIN booting to the usb drive, but then it hangs forever…I have tried every boot option available: boot, boot verbose, boot ignore caches and boot single user with the same results every time with each option…wants to boot, then hangs (no errors, no nothing) I get the Apple logo, but not the spinning wheel thingy you would normally see during boot up indicating the machine is “thinking”.

    Please help.
    Thanks
