Burn it Down Linkin Park Song Meaning

Linkin Park continues to amuse us with their superb & deep music & lyrics.

Linkin Park’s new Song “Burn it down” brings out two different meanings which can be interpreted differently by different people. It can be interpreted in terms of:

  • Love & Broken relationship
  • Humanity & its unlimited selfish, ruthless nature

Linkin Park – Burn it Down Lyrics

The cycle repeated,
As explosions broke in the sky,
All that I needed,
Was the one thing I couldn’t find,
And you were there at the turn,
Waiting to let me know,

Chorus:
We’re building it up,
To break it back down,
We’re building it up,
To burn it down,
We can’t wait,
To burn it to the ground.

The colors conflicted,
As the flames climbed into the clouds.
I wanted to fix this,
But couldn’t stop from tearing it down.

And you were there at the turn,
Caught in the burning glow.
And I was there at the turn,
Waiting to let you go.
We’re building it up,
To break it back down,
We’re building it up,
To burn it down,
We can’t wait,
To burn it to the ground.

You told me yes,
You held me high,
And I believed,
When you told that lie.

I played solider,
You played king,
Struck me down,
When I kissed that ring.

You lost that right,
To hold that crown,
I built you up,
But you let me down.

So when you fall,
I’ll take my turn,
And fan the flames,
As your blazes burn.

And you were there at the turn,
Waiting to let me know.

We’re building it up,
To break it back down,
We’re building it up,
To burn it down,

[We can’t wait,
To burn it to the ground.
So when you fall,
I’ll take my turn,
And fan the flames,
As your blazes burn. ] x2

We can’t wait,
To burn it to the ground…

Love & Broken Relationships:

The song is about a bad relationship that jumps back and forth between being good and bad.

The first two lines “The cycle repeated, as explosions broke in the sky” shows the cyclic nature of the relationship but that its always in turmoil. There is a want to “fix it, but couldn’t stop from tearing it down.” So the singer feels that he is “Building it up, to break it back down.” No matter what they try to do, they always end up burning down their relationship into ashes. This is further seen in Mike rap, where he says that they try to “I play soldier and you played king,” but that it doesn’t work because they end up striking each other down no matter what they do.

You told me yes,
You held me high,
And I believed,
When you told that lie.

This relation is broken because of lies and abandoned trust. One of them had been hiding the truth in the purported relation.

“And you were there at the turn, to let me know that we’re building it up to burn it down.”

So in the end they come up with the solution, they will burn it down once and for all.

“And I was there at the turn,
Waiting to let you go.”

No more attempts at trying to fix the relationship, its time to let you go.

Humanity & its unlimited selfish, ruthless Nature:

This could have a perfect relation with Humans and their selfish motives. The best hint comes from the chorus of the song: “We’re building it up, To burn it down”.

Its human tendency to come up with technology that can make skyscrapers but eventually, its again the same technology that makes nuclear bombs to burn it back to the ground. Humans turn out to be ruthless, impatient and selfish.”We can’t wait, to burn it to the ground”.

“So when you fall,
I’ll take my turn,
And fan the flames,
As your blazes burn”.

In above lines, Mike Shinoda goes deeper saying that human instinct is destruction driven. If given a chance, they bring out their worst by helping the fire grow, while the others suffer in pain.

You told me yes,
You held me high,
And I believed,
When you told that lie.

This one may refer to Politicians and liars dwelling in any community. Corrupt citizens & leaders reach the higher positions with promises that are meant to be broken.
