3. Put your iDevice to DFU mode with onscreen instructions or as stated below:

• Press and hold the sleep button for 2 seconds

Jailbreak iPhone 3g, 3gs, iPod touch on iOS4

Step 1. Launch Sn0wbreeze as administrator and connect  your iPhone via USB.

Step 2. Click on next arrow and choose your preferred mode:

• Simple Mode - Step by step instructions (as below) and automatically detects your correct firmware and adds the unlock and activation and jailbreak with Cydia automatically to your custom firmware.
• Expert Mode – You have the power to adjust the settings on the various different additions to the custom firmware – if you click through and do not change anything in expert mode it will make the same.

Step 3. Lets select firmware. click “Browse” and locate it.

Step 4. Lets go through steps ne by one. Click “General” and advanced. At this point, if you chose to Jailbreak iPhone, the sn0w  asks us if you wish to activate your iPhone.

If you are using an Official service provider (i.e. AT&T or any other for worldwide users) you do not need to Unlock Baseband, select NO. If You are using an Unofficial service provider then Select YES

Step 5. Next you chose to install Cydia or Rock or both. Cydia is enough.

Step 6. It ’s time to choose the packages to be included in your firmware. We can choose between:

• Repository pre-added
• Add. Deb that you have on your computer.

We are almost done and ready to  “Build IPSW”. Just sit back and relax while custom ipsw is built.

Step 7. Now put your phone in DFU/Recovery mode

iPhone in recovery mode :

1. Turn the device completely off and disconnect it from cable/dock.
2. Hold down the home button.
3. While holding down the home button connect to a computer with a cable (easiest) or dock.
4. Keep holding down the home button until you see a connect-to-iTunes screen You are now in recovery mode.

Step 9. Fire iTunes and hold Shift  click on “Restore” button in iTunes and Browse the firmware you just created in step 6. Chill out as you wait. Now you have jailbroken iPhone/ iPod touch on iOS4. ext we will unlock it.

If you are  official carrier or own iPod Touch, you are done.

So the processors on the devices are not fully exploited, but with overclocking it is very much possible, but only on jailbroken iPhone/ iPod touch. The processor of the iPhone 2G, 3G is indeed 600MHz, but Apple has underclocked it to 412 MHz only, iPhone 3GS instead of 833 MHz it is operated at 600Mhz. But its easy to run them at their factory clocks.

How to Overclock  CPU on iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch

Step 1. Make sure you have a Jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch. (Jailbreaking guides)

The new app is called Live Link 3G and is currently available in Japanese App Store [iTunes Link]. Developed by Yudo Inc., the application allows two iPhone users to engage in video calls, with remarkably smooth video and solid audio and no need of jailbreaking, it’s on App Store.
Of course, since the iPhone doesn’t have a front facing camera, most conversations will feature you and your receiver showing the other’s live location and activity. Nevertheless, you can use a mirror like iSnapMe to convert rear camera to front camera.

The app that enables it is only available for jailbroken devices in the Cydia store for $5. The app is called BTstack Keyboard and is supported on iPhone 3GS

Engadget had a quick hands-on the application. Pairing your iPhone and keyboard was as easy as it could be. Works well over all the applications, though, cut, copy, paste is yet to get shortcuts. We can hope for more in future app updates, for the meantime it serves the purpose well.

In the past Quake 3, Doom and other gaming engines had been ported well to the iPhone. Unreal 3 engine powers modern DirectX 10 games like Gears of War 2, Unreal Tournament 3, now runs on an iPod Touch,  iPhone 3GS.

The game is fully playable using a modified Unreal Tournament level. Mark, the developer behind porting, has created a virtual thumbstick on the for providing screen controls and other controls like tap the screen to shoot.  In practice, the controls work well.

Surprisingly, the frame rate was great, a smooth gameplay. The game uses OpenGL ES 2.0, the horsepower behind iPhone 3GS.

Epic games have no plans for porting this game officially, so expect this to be only a jailbroken app.

And it’s not just about iPhone support. Mark told anandtech that in CES we’ll see Unreal Engine 3 on another mobile platform, hopefully. Did he mean Nexus one? Running Unreal 3 Engine isn’t a platform specific thing, it’s about bringing Unreal Engine 3 to the entire portable market. For now, Mark is planning to license this gaming engine to general public based on the open SDK available. What we are not sure of is when and how Epic will expanding it’s UE3′s horizon to mobile market.

iPhone 3GS is the first step in mobile gaming with 65nm technology, Intel is coming up with its 32nm chips and Nvidia is pushing mobile graphics too, both targeting to squeeze size and hence increase capabilities. With UE3 on the iPhone, we will eventually see better games on almost every platform, expect the unexpected.

Step 1: Preparing your iTunes

Launch your iTunes9.x (upgrade to latest), connect your iPhone and sync to backup all your data.

Once download of the required .ipsw file completes, Move it to the following location:

“C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\”

Vista
“C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\”

XP

Now, Re-open iTunes,  you will be prompted to install the new firmware 3.1, DO NOT UPDATE from this prompt. Just close this dialog.

Step 2:  Restoring

Now, lets restore the 3.1 custom Firmware. To do this, press and hold left “Shift” button on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update”) button in the iTunes and then release the “Shift” button.

New window popsup asking you to locate your custom firmware. After selecting, iTunes will start decompressing and then will install. This is an automatic process, sit back and relax.

When it finishes your iPhone 3GS is unlocked and Fully Jailbroken.

Step 3: Syncing (optional)

Once you are done with the unlocking and jailbreak process. You can now restore all your settings, apps, music, contacts and photos to the newly installed firmware version 3.1 by restoring the backup that you made in Step 1 from iTunes.

Recently, a software shop called Eurocenter is touting that its newly-released Adrenaline Golf is the first game to take the full advantage of the 3GS’ added graphics capabilities.

But it’s hard to comment on it because we can’t verify that no other application in App Store hasn’t utilized OpenGL ES 2.0 in some way or the other.

But the differnce clearly popped-out to eyes, when you try this game on 3GS vs. 3G or 2G.

The graphics are way too richer and smooth. They look to have a better resolution and better anti-aliasing techniques.

This game actually chooses the correct graphics engine at runtime, hence it works on all verison of iPhone, iPod Touch.

Truth: Rocking Pocket’s Blue Skies has had 3GS-specific enhancements for a while now. So there are two games that currently leverage the potential of OpenGL on 3GS and iPod Touch. Though this game isn’t that graphics rich. That leaves EuroTech, again, first in the race.

As things turn out this is an arbitrary limit set by Apple possibly to conserve battery life or to simply match previous models.

A user of chinese site WeiPhone did a lot of testing with the iPhone 3GS and discovered it can smoothly play back HD video at 30 Mbps in 1980×1080 resolution. The test was done by uploading various HD movies to the iPhone 3GS using the program FileAid and then running them via the iPhones built-in video player.

Not that this has any real usage in everyday life since HD video doesn’t have much of a point on the small iPhone screen. You could however pick up one of those Apple Composite AV cables and run some high-def from iPhone to TV if you REALLY needed to.

Talking about the Hardware, Samsung-branded system-on-a-chip (SoC) featuring a multi-format codec with untapped HD video playback and capture capabilities.

“The S5PC100 enables the integration of various functionalities, such as, wireless communication, personal navigation, camera, portable gaming, portable music/video player, mobile TV and PDA into one device,” the South Korea-based electronic maker says in a PDF published to its website. “The S5PC100 adopts a 32-bit ARM Cortex A8 RISC microprocessor and a 64/32-bit internal bus architecture, and operates up to 833MHz.”

Apple appears to have chosen run the chip, which is rebranded with the following markings, below its maximum clock speed for optimal power consumption. But the additional 233MHz aren’t the only capabilities of the S5PC100 that Apple has chosen to forgo in the iPhone 3G S.

Samsung also notes that its chip sports a high definition multi format codec enabling higher resolution multimedia functions at low power consumption. Specifically, it states that the S5PC100 “features a built-in, 720p multi format codec (MFC) video Engine which ensures smooth 30fps video encoding and playblack at low power consumption, and supports three types of TV out interface (NTSC/PAL/HDMI).”

Apple has thus far decided not to take advantage of these HD capabilities for video recording, as the iPhone 3G S video camera will only capture clips in VGA-quality. Early reviews of handset were mixed in their assessment of the resulting video quality, with some saying it pales in comparison to that from the popular $229 Flip pocket camcorder, while others called it “quiet decent” and said the quality was “impressively smooth and natural.”

Inbuilt Search. The first feature people wondered about was the Pre’s “Universal search” function. This is a single search bar that allows keyword hunts in “web and user’s applications, contacts, and dialing information,” as well as web pages. iPhone 3.0 brings Spotlight, almost directly from OS X it seems, to the iPhone, with searching within Calendar items, iPod tracks, Notes, contacts, web pages, email headers (but not message bodies) and applications. In the press event to announce the Pre, Palm splashed this feature as a direct snub at Apple–the current iPhone firmware forbids it. Even Apple’s “push notification” feature, a half-way house for background apps, was mentioned months ago, then disappeared totally. But iPhone 3.0 will bring push notifications, and Apple was careful to explain why there’s no background app-running: battery life. Apple’s said it had tested running background apps on BlackBerrys, Windows Mobile devices and so on, and in every case “stand-by time dropped by 80% or more.” That’s a deliberate snub right back at Palm, especially since Apple qualified it by saying an IM app running push only reduced the iPhone’s stand-by time by 23%. Though Jailbroken App “Backgrounder” actually run apps in background, but it’s not officially supported by iPhone. Coming to Windows Mobile, It can always run multiple programs simultaneously. The switching between applications is through standard menu. switching is pretty decent in speed.

Navigation. Palm’s Pre has full GPS navigation functions, with turn-by-turn directions. But it’s an extra, App from Sprint Navigation. The current iPhone specifically excludes turn-by-turn navigation, effectively shutting off full GPS functions. Firmware 3.0, however, does allow it, with a single condition: “bring your own maps.” That’s pretty much an open door for third party developers  to get in on the iPhone nav goodness. WM has large no. of good navigation softwares. You will see lots of applications it their market place that let you do turn-by-turn navigation.

Calendar and Syncing. The Pre uses Palm’s Synergy to link up Outlook, Google and even Facebook calendars to one location, whereas iPhone 2.0′s Calendar app is more than a little limited–you can’t even invite meeting requests from the phone. The new firmware 3.0 adds support for Exchange, CalDAV and .ics formats for subscribing to different calendars, and it’ll let you create meeting invitations. CalDAV is supported by Google Calendar, Yahoo Calendar beta and others, making it a now potentially fully-synchronized Calendar app. The WM 6.5 undoubtedly supports this one by default. The integration with Exchange is homegrown so pretty good.

Camera. The Pre has a 3-megapixel digital camera with an LED flash light  The iPhone’s 3-megapixels seems slick with Auto-Focus ( and Tap to focus). In WM you get wide range of hardwares to choose from. You can get cameras from 2-5MP over standard HTC devices.

Video Recording: With iPhone 3GS, official video recording comes to iPhone though it was possible with jailbreaking earlier too. Also, it exposes a good video editing and upload on the fly. Pre has no application yet to do a video record. It might be supported in future via firmware upgrade. All WM have inbuilt video recorder though the quality depends from vendor to vendor. And there is none that can edit videos in practical. Few will feature HD 720p recording too.

Bluetooth Stereo A2DP. The Pre, iPhone 3GS has A2DP (even iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G doesn’t).As far as WM is concerned, you get that in all the phones. Even the base models will have them.

Copy and Paste. The Pre has it and iPhone 2.0 doesn’t, but iPhone 3.0 has a fantastic copy-paste function that lets you copy text almost from anywhere to anywhere, and if you do soemthing wrong, it has a neat “shake to undo” trick.  WM has fair support of copy and paste though not as extensible as the one on iPhone 3.0.

On-Screen Keyboard: Palm Pre  doesnt have it and iPhone has industry’s best onscreen keyboard implementations. Auto-landscape make them slick and easy to use with bare finger. On WM, most on-screen keyboards are glitchy and tiny. They need stylus most of them and the result, low words per minute.

Hardware Keyboard: Here WM and Palm Pre are clear winners, both of them have Hardware keyboard. Since iPhone has fair on-screen keyboards, need of hardware platform is never felt that amplified.

Battery: Palm Pre has average battery life. iPhone 3G S promises to improve battery life over last iPhone 3G making it the best battery juice device. Again, WM environment is all dependent, but one of them gives better battery than 3G S.

Processor and Graphics: iPhone 3G S and Palm PRe use the same ARM cotex processor underclocked to 600Mhz though capable of 750Mhz. WM ranges from 100Mhz to 450Mhz, not as powerful as the former hardware platforms. Graphics wise, undoubtedly 3G S kicks out both Pre and WM 6 devices. 3G S’s support for OpenGL with accelearted graphics capability is designed for serious handheld gaming. Infact, it will pose a threat to PSP, Nintendo DS.

Applications: Windows mobile is fairly mature mobile platform with various no. of applications. But the recent last 2years buzz of iPhone has kicked every one out. It has whooping 60k+ applications to choose from (Jailbroken applications included). There is a lot utilities and apps to choose from. Palm Pre being new to the market with SDK just out, has very few applications, though scenario should change in the near future.

Gaming: Clearly iPhone 3GS > Palm Pre  >>> WM 6.5

The Bottom line is that the competition between iPhone, Palm Pre, and Windows Phones is good for us the consumers as this is what keeps Apple, Palm, Google and Microsoft on their toes and on top of their game. The competition brings the best out of them and innovation is a virtue.

What is the best, is totally upto the kind of user we are targeting. A developer, power user might like iPhone than anything else. A business user with low app demands might choose WM. It’s all on the personal preference. If you are like me, I would rate iPhone 3GS as the best all rounder phone.

Recommended operating temperatures
Operate iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between zero and 35 degrees Celsius (32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit). Low or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly.

Recommended storage temperatures
Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20 and 45 degrees Celsius (-4 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

• iPhone will no longer charge
• iPhone display will dim
• Weaker cell signal

The iPhone’s internal and ambient temperatures can spike when it’s performing multiple functions simultaneously. Specific instances include using the iPhone while it’s charging, using Wi-Fi during phone calls, and accessing data services during phone calls. I’ve alsoexperienced the iPhone 2G gets warm during very long phone calls and during normal charging, but in 3G S, this problem is more amplified. Reports of discoloration on white iPhone 3GS models have been blamed on overheating.

Tips for keeping your iPhone cool

• Some external cases–especially those that were designed before the iPhone was released and were not properly tested–can prevent heat from dissipating properly. Be especially wary of silicone covers, as they tend to act as insulators.
• Power down various internal circuitry by putting the device in Airplane mode. Go to the Settings menu and slide Airplane Mode to On.
• Don’t leave the iPhone in a car on a hot day or in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.
• Use of certain applications like mapping and gaming for extended periods might lead to the iPhone overheating. Limit the length of these activities if possible.
• iPhone temperature warning screen appears (see above)

Meanwhile, the iPhone user manual states:

“You cannot use iPhone while the temperature warning screen is displayed except to make an emergency call. If none of the above measures succeeds in lowering the internal temperature, iPhone automatically goes into a deep sleep mode until it cools. You cannot make an emergency call when iPhone is in this mode. Move iPhone to a cooler location and wait a few minutes before trying to use iPhone again.”

A Fox News video covering the iPhone overheating issue can be viewed on Comcast’s Web site. According to that video, your iPhone will shut down if the temperature inside the iPhone reaches 113 degrees.

While it is clear that overheating can happen, in all fairness, this is true of just about any electronic device. What’s more, talking on a cell phone for a long period has caused other handsets to heat up, too. Is your iPhone 3GS overheating? Has the case shown any discoloring?I don’t think so. changing the color of a glazed plastic requires atleast 150 degree celsius, which is never observed on a phone unless kept in Microwave oven.

This game is super cool for all the fans of flight simulator. Ofcourse it’s mobile platform  don’t expect advanced controls, but this one gives u pleasant graphics and flying experience. Packed with action shooting and 10s of Mission makes this game a worth go.

Hero Of Sparta
Hero of Sparta is one of the first Action game that brings the story of Sparta and 300 alive. The Game features alot of levels, missions and variety of weapons, powers to choose from as you gain points. The fights with monsters is truly multi-touch experience, makes you feel u are actually fighting the dragons.

Terminator Salvation

If you love RPG on PC, this one is the best alternative on mobile. Expect PSP level graphics from this game. Terminator based on the altest movie salvation is packed with Rich grpahics. Game offers a a mission based game where you have to fulfill all the objectives one by one.

Castle Of Magic

This is not a 3D game but I found it worth mentioning. It is a cartoon based fantasy games, looks like for kids at the first look, but dont get mistaken. It has some really good graphics and can be categorized under “good adventure games”.

Quake 3

Well, this one is ported version of PC Quake 3 to iPhone. Expec a bit lower level of graphics than pc. And this game is available only for Jailbroken iPhones. I found it very hard to play with very difficult controls.

You loved Fifa on Pc? you will love this one equally. Expect really good grahics from this game an play soccer like Pros. The Game got Real like graphics,

Based on the movie concept of Resident Evil, this games promises to give good graphics and different objectives to finish the epidemic. The audio isn’t too attractive, sometimes you are annoyed by it.

Get ready to golf with this mini character golf. Grpahics are average not as good I would expect from it, but game is fun to play conisdering that rendering is pretty fast.

This is the best Tennis game you can get on any mobile platform. Graphics are Rich, smooth and interface is really easy to play compared to other tennis games that have appeared on iPhone.

Real Racing

If you want to play the best Real like racing game on iPhone with support for online and offline multiplayer, this one is for you.  It’s a technically peerless racing game that really pushes into the realms of the PSP racer.

More than that, though, Real Racing shows how the iPhone’s unique controls needn’t be a handicap for traditional game types. As you tear around each beautifully detailed track, you tilt the handset to steer, making for one of the finest approximations of steering yet seen on a portable device.

Developer Firemint hasn’t forgotten about the experience outside of the cockpit, either, with some fiendishly sophisticated AI giving you a proper test on the track. And when you tire of the single player experience there’s a whole host of multiplayer options to keep you racing.

Metal Gear Solid Touch

This Game is a bindblowing third person shooter packed with graphics. Don’t expect any stealth. MSGT is basically a glorified shooting gallery, set in Metal Gear Solid 4 environments against Metal Gear Solid 4 baddies. The graphics are so good and the gunplay mechanics are so satisfying, however, that you probably won’t mind a bit.

Myst

What felt dated by modern PC standards – the static screens, repetitive sound effects, cheesy video and limited movement – now seems perfectly streamlined for on-the-go iPhone gaming. Let’s hope this is just the beginning of a portable point-and-click resurgence.

Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles

Assasin creed is graphics rich game with lot of great 3D rendering. You won’t find another free-roaming sandbox with current-gen graphics, but you will get a surprisingly deep, remarkably fun platforming game in the mold of last-gen Prince of Persia. You’ll also get 6-8 hours of mobile entertainment for half the cost of the DS version. This games proves that iPhone 3d platform has higher scope than what other mobile gaming did.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR

Hard to believe, considering the publisher and the hefty charge, but Tiger Woods on iPhone is a terrific buy. Almost everything you love about the console games has been fit in here: the licensed courses, the extensive tournaments, the professional cameos, the character generator, the precise control scheme and over 120 holes to choose between. Wow.

Need for Speed Undercover

The app store offers dozens of racing games, but Need for Speed Undercover is the best by far. The graphics are spectacular. A perfect replacement for PSP – and the play modes are varied.

Brothers In Arms: Hour of Heroes

This game is one of the first 3D 3rd person shoot cum action game. But don’t mistake this one to be a less on Graphics. the audio and video effects will blow your mind. It’s a WWII shooter franchise that isn’t Call of Duty or Medal of Honor. You know, the one with the serious story and the character development and the team strategy and the “Brothers” in its title. You know which one we’re talking about, right?

Rating: 8.5/10

Silent Hill: The Escape

It’s based on The survival horror series, responsible for making psychological pain and billowing brown fog as scary as a dude with a giant rusty sword and bloody pyramid for a head.

Not worth unless you’re a diehard Silent Hill apologist. If you take away the story, characters and overall reason for wandering through repetitive dark hallways, all you’re left with is… repetitive dark hallways. Except on the iPhone, you’re also stuck with clunky graphics and hit-or-miss controls. Drab and dull all around.

Time Crisis Strike

It is Based on Time Crisis is another arcade favorite, another first-person rail shooter and another attempt to save some kidnapped member of the President’s family with attached plastic weaponry. Didn’t we review this already?

Worth: Remember VirtuaCop and  Time Crisis? this is the same game concept brought to iPhone. Unfortunately, as this game was originally designed for play with a light gun, all you really do is tap enemies as they run across your field of vision. Blocky, polygonal enemies that haven’t been updated whatsoever since 1995. Recommended for nostalgia, but not much else.

The Rapid Repair dismantled 3G S, and detailed out the inner components. They discovered the same 600 MHz CPU powering the Palm Pre (that can actually run at 833 MHz).

The two phones, 3G S & Pre, share the same CPU and GPU, they run on different chipsets (iPhone: Samsung SoC S5PC100, Pre: TI OMAP 3430). However, this Samsung chipset is also capable of handling 720p video recording, streaming video conferencing and even Dolby 5.1 audio processing, giving this hardware some serious future potential.

CPU Power consumption

The CortexA8 processor can use up to 3x more power than the previous ARM 11 in the first two iPhones, yet battery life managed to improve with the 3G S. It is possible that the hardware might be using a process similar to Intel’s Quick Start technology, which saves power by quickly ramping the processor up to full power when in use, and then dropping it down to an idle state when not in use actually averages out saves more power than running it at more constant power levels.

Battery with More Juice

CPU enhancements explains the improved battery life. Also, the increased-capacity battery (1219 mAh, compared to the previous 1150 mAh), might also have something to do with it.
