Convert Image to Text Online – Free OCR

OCR or Optical character recognition has potentially infinite benefits: A printed page can be quickly be converted to Text for editing and Re-use. Whether they are  notes from meeting, an instructor, an old document, a Book, a letter that needs to be turned into a template, an text-image taken from Digital cam or phone, Online OCR tools can help.

There are lots of software based solutions that let you do all this. But with the beginning of cloud computing, everything wants to go online. OnlineOCR is one such free service. Another good one to lookout for is FreeOCR.

These  services let you upload documents in a variety of formats like PDF, TIFF, JPG, and other image files as well as a compressed format like ZIP. There are no hassles of registering with them (FreeOCR), but for OnlineOCR, without that you can convert documents up to 1MB in size and 5 pages long. Creating a free account with OnlineOCR allows you to upload documents that are 20MB in size and longer than 5 pages. So when you are in hurry, things are easy.

Using these service, you can easily convert a PDF with tables into an editable Word document with tables and what not. However, if you are a returning customer, you need to pay for the OnlineOCR service, since it’s free trial. On the other hand, FreeOCR is totally free.

Another free one is OCRTerminal.

Online OCR is actually not free. When you use it the first time you don't have to pay, but it doesn't convert the whole file for you. Once you sign up, you're allotted “credits” per page to convert. Once you run out of credits you have to buy more to continue using it, so it's actually not free. Free OCR is completely free but it only allows you to upload 10 images per hour and it doesn't do well with handwritten text. I found a really good online OCR tool from cvisiontech.com. It's completely free, works fast, and has much better results than other websites. Here's the link: http://www.cvisiontech.com/online-conversion/ge…
