Set Custom DPI without losing Play Store app Compatibility [Android]

Android modders get to play around with lot of things when it comes to nasty customization. On a Rooted android, you can change the DPI (density per inch) of the screen pixels and emulate larger or smaller form factor within your device.

e.g. You can set a lower DPI and get more real-estate on your android phone. You can even set a DPI of 240 or 160 to get Tablet UI on a phone. However, if you set a Custom DPI other than standard DPIs, the immediate effect is you lose app compatibility for various Play Store apps.

200 vs 240 dpi on android phone

The workarounds exists: you can install  a patched Play Store APK but that would stop future updates to Play Store. The only fool proof fix to this problem is a windows based application called Play Store DPI Fix tool.

Set Custom DPI without losing Play Store apps compatibility

What you need:

  • Download [Exe] from xda forums
  • A Windows PC
  • Rooted Android Device
  • Micro USB cable
  • USB drivers for your device (required for ADB installing)
  • USB Debugging enabled
  • (JRE 1.6+) Java Runtime Environment installed on your PC

Like the name suggests, Play Store DPI Fix tool lets you fix a custom DPI to your device and choose another standard DPI (of your choice) for the Play Store. e.g. you can choose a custom DPI of 220 for the screen and set DPI 320 for the play store and let all phone apps still compatible.

The app is straightforward, with two clicks you get the job done. Just connect your phone with USB and run this app. Set your preferred custom DPI values, and you are all set.

How Play Store DPI Fix works

It takes existing Play Store and Google Service Framework APKs on your device, decompiles them, mods them (fools play store with a fixed DPI), compiles them back, signs them, zipaligns them and certifies them. It does make backups of original files in case something really goes wrong.

The app has been tested from Gingerbread all the way to Jellybean (android 2.3 to 4.2) and it works without glitches.

Limitations:

  • Requires that Market be named Phonesky.apk and GSF as GoogleServiceFramework.apk
  • Works best if not only with untouched/ unaltered originals of Phonesky.apk and GoogleServiceFramework.apk

App is great tweak for modders, power android users.
