How to Jailbreak, Unlock iPhone OS 3.1 on 2G, 3G on Windows, Mac

As we saw earlier, OS 3.1 doesn’t bring much of a use. But there are few things like signal improvements which are worth for a few. Any ways choosing the right OS is upto you and guiding on how to jailbreak it is upto me 🙂

Update: Guide to iPhone 3GS Jailbreak unlock 3.1

Update 2: Guide to iPhone Jailbreak 3.1.2 (blackra1n)

Update 3: Guide to iPhone Unlock, Jailbreak 3.1.2

So here we go thanking Dev Team for releasing new Pwnage tool, which now makes it possible to Jailbreak, Unlock iPhone 3.1  iPhone 3G users are advised to use Pwnage tool for retaining their current baseband.

Start these Downloads, as you read on:

iPhone 2G OS 3.1 Custom Firmware : part 1 part 2 (HJSplit) or part1 part2 (WinRAR)

iPhone 3G OS 3.1 Custom Firmware : part 1 part 2 or part1 part2 part3 (HJSplit)

Don’t get confused by “or” choose either of them.

All you have to do is download a custom firmware hotlinked below this custom firmware is created with Dev team Pwnage Tool that strips out the baseband update from the upgrade.

Read these Guidelines by Dev Team, before touching the firmware on your iPhone:

  1. If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates. (in case you have done this, follow Downgrade baseband guide.)
  2. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw
  3. This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  4. If you already updated your iPhone 3G to 3.1 non pwned or Apple firmware then you can’t enjoy UltraSn0w anymore.
  5. For iPhone 2G, follow first 2 steps and for iPhone 3G follow 3rd step aswell.
  6. Golden Rule: During the restore, if you get into any trouble, then put your phone in DFU mode and try again all over again.

Let’s Rock n Roll:

The files you downloaded above are split using HJSplit or Rar. Download HJSplit to join both the files – HJSplit for Windows and HJSplit for Mac. Winrar, probably, you already have it.

Step 1: Preparing your iPhone

Launch your iTunes9 (upgrade if you already haven’t), connect your iPhone and put it inphone in DFU mode by following instructions.

  • Turn the phone off
  • Hold power and Home buttons together for exactly 10 seconds
  • Release power, while holding home button till the pc detects USB device.

A Display set to OFF shows that you were successful. If this doesn’t work for you searh for “iphone DFU” on Youtube.

Step 2:  Restoring

For Mac, Click on ‘Ok’ to the prompt displayed and hold Option key and then hit Restore button. For Windows, hold the shift key and then hit the restore button.

New window popsup asking you to locate your custom firmware. After selecting, iTunes will start decompressing and then will install. This is an automatic process, sit back and relax.

When it finishes, if you are on iPhone 2G, you are done. Your phone is jailbroken (with cydia installed) and Unlocked. 🙂

For iPhone 3G, there’s just one more thing. ROFL like Steve Jobs always says.

Step 3: Installing Ultrasn0w (for 3G only)

Launch cydia,  Manage > sources > Edit > Add “http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/”. This is the source for Ultrasn0w unlock for 3G.

After your sources refresh, search for “Ultrasn0w” and install it. Then Reboot . When it starts again, wait on the slide to unlock screen for say  10 seconds and after reaching home screen wait another 10. If you don’t see the your network working, reset network settings and try reinserting the SIM card and wait another 10 seconds.

You should be done.

Troubleshooting: Follow this guide if you get any iTunes Errors 16xx (1601,1602, 1603, 1604)

Try This: Downgrade the iphone to 3.0 with DFU mode, jailbreak, add cydia and all that stuff and then upgrade the iphone with the custom firmware.

I AM SO FRUSTRATED. I did EVERYTHING and got nothing. I just have a jailbroken iphone 3g os 3.1 now. why won't it unlock?

I downgraded my iphone 3g os 3.1 to 3.0.Then I jailbroke it using quickpwn 2.2. Then I upgraded to the custom firmware using redsn0w 0.7. Then i unlocked using ultrasn0w. I put in my t-mobile sim card and BOOM nothing, it says still searching. My 3g was off while i did the ultrasn0w. wat did i do wrong??? I'm so lost. it should say t-mobile but it says NO SERVICE. i reset the network settings, rebooted, reinserted the sim card. to see if there was something wrong with the sim, i even used a diff sim that works fine n same result. what do i do???

    • Seems like you broke rule no.1
How did you initially install 3.1 ? via iTunes?
If yes, then we can't really do anything till Dev Team comes with a solution -anew version of sn0w.
In case you didn't do it via iTunes, try downgrading baseband (google it)

Ok…here it goes…great news for the Iphone user.
This does work..cracked my 8GB 3G with no problems.
But I did it a easier way.

    1) Download the custom ispw part 1 and 2 to your harddrive.

    2) Join the files together using the HSplit.
( It will show only part 1 in the box, it will add part 2 o n its own.)

3)Hsplit will ask for a destination folder…USE A FLASH DRIVE…past experence has shown that
any downloaded ispw will become a pain to convert on a harddrive. The flash drive will make it a apple ispw file…

    4) Connect the iphone to Itunes Ver.9

    5) Hold down the shift key and click restore.

    6) Locate the ispw file on the flash drive..

    7) Itunes will do its thing…..

    8) When all is done and finished…follow the steps for Ultrasn0w listed above.

    9) When you connect it back to Itunes..it will see it as a new phone.

    10) Just do as you would if you are backing up the phone.

Thanks allways to THe GreAt Dev Team And Others.

I was just able to download the 2g 3.1 custom firmware from the 'part 1' and 'part 2' links above. You have to click on the words 'part 1' and 'part 2' and download them from page you end up at. You have to play some waiting games if you're not a preferred user, but you can wait it out.

Hello everyone. I have a 1st Gen iPhone (2G) with current version 2.2 (5G77), jailbroken and unlocked, on T-Mobile. I want to upgrade to 3.1 using this guide. Do I need to do anything before I move directly to 3.1? I have not moved to 3.0 through iTunes, whether using the default software provided by iTunes or by using custom software. Your help would be awesome! I don't want to end up with a phone that I can't use.

One more quick question – if I tried to upgrade to 3.1 and failed, when I restore to a backup stored in iTunes, does it use the prior version of unlocked and jailbroken software that was previously on the phone (in other words, putting it back the same way it just was), or does it restore to factory software? I always wondered that. THANKS!

Hi i think i fund the problem why we all get the 16XX etc error
i have 3g and unfortunately i upgrade to 3.1 via itunes
when you go to DFU mode proccesss
you Should make sure not leave the HOME button untill you get a whait screen
only then you can leave it
now you can try to shift + restore to the ipsw file
i fund that if you leave the home button you will get during the restore the 1600 eror
    hope that is helping

    Hi
I have a 8gb 3G Iphone. I bought it to give to my wife for Christmas. It is locked to the O2 network. I am living in Cyprus and need to unlock it. About a month ago, I unlocked my 3GS iphone with Blackra1n and it all went very smoothly and I now have an unlocked iphone. However, I’ve tried many times with this 3G iphone and after running blackra1n, I install Cydia and Snow, it all looks fine, until I put the Cyprus sim card in. I then get the recovery screen come up and it says “different sim detected. Please connect to itunes” which of course doesn’t solve the problem. The strange thing is, it seems to be picking up the Cyprus network on the top left hand corner, but it stays on the recovery screen and is unable to make or receive calls. I’ve tried rebooting several times. I’ve restored, updated the latest software from itunes. I’ve checked everywhere on the internet but I can’t seem to get any further. I’m now desperate as it looks like my wife will not be getting a Christmas present and heaven help me. I’d appreciate any help with this matter. Thank you.
