Nikon Coolpix S800c Android Camera Specs, Details

Look mom, my camera can run Angry Birds.

The First Android based Digital Camera is announced and it can do all that you expect it would.

Nikon Coolpix S800c is world’s first digicam to Run Android.

It runs stock version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with all the Google Services, out of the box. Like any smartphone, you can connect to wifi, Install apps and even use an app like Instagram, Flickr, or Facebook / Google+ to instantly share your photos to the web.

Update: Samsung launches Galaxy Camera, powered by android Jellybean

Or if you like to touch up photos you can use run Photoshop Touch, and Edit images on camera itself.

You might want to run internet browser to learn photography techniques and play Games off this touchscreen camera, but a 1,050mAh battery would be the bottleneck.

S800c runs an embedded Nikon proprietary OS along with the Android to support the camera shooting at all times.

Battery Life: Battery life is pretty disappointing at just 150 shots per charge (as per CIPA standards), but the S800c has an advantage over most smartphones of having a removable battery. You can swap a charged battery in when the existing one is exhausted. The small EN-EL12 battery offers 3.8Wh of power.

For perspective, the Nikon S8000 managed to get 210 shots per charge from the same battery. May be Nikon didn’t wanted to ditch their embedded OS legacy just yet. Becuase of this Dual-OS, you can click photos from the camera even when Android is shut down or booting up.

The idea is to save battery. Nikon shuts down Android OS after a pre-configured idle time. So when you power on the S800c after a long time, your camera can immediately start clicking, then later when Android boots, the interface seamlessly goes back to smart mode, which is when you can hit the back or home button to toggle the Android unlock screen.
