You can always spend a lot on buying digital cables like HDMI only because some manufacturers claim their cables to be superior than the cheaper alternatives. Its justified if their claim is about analog cables like VGA (RGB) and audio cables where signal to noise ration is directly proportional to quality.

Better the cable, less the cross-talk, less the noise, better signal you get. But is it the same for digital cables like HDMI? Short answer, you DON’T need an expensive cable. Long answer: read on.
Signal Quality & Factors

HDMI & DVI use Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS).

Transition Minimized: The binary data (1s and 0s) at the source of a Bluray or HD box is not exactly the 1s and 0s your TV uses to create a picture. Before sending the signal out via the HDMI output, the 1s and 0s are optimized to minimize how many transitions there are. So instead of 10101010, the transmission may look like 11110000. Even though you might think the whole data is changed, its not hard to re-contruct the data at receiving end.

Differential Signaling: Each HDMI cable is actually multiple, small copper wires. Two versions of the data are sent over different wires. One of these is out of phase with the “real” signal. The TV receives all the data, puts the out-of-phase signal back in phase, then compares it to the “real” signal. Any noise picked up along the way will now be out of phase, and as such it is effectively negated and ignored.
This is exactly how Twisted pair in LAN networking works, there is no affect of external noise.

In digital world, either its all right or all wrong, no change of something in between. With HDMI signal, you either get everything and it’s perfect, or it isn’t perfect and you get nothing.

When there can be a problem

But there are scenarios where you’ve a long hdmi cable and you can have trouble in signal quality. If HDMI cable is faulty (this means one of the wires inside cable is broken) you would get white pixels. This a very rare scenario & is called Sparkles more like snow or sometimes static white pixels: image credit: cnet

Sparkles are not noise. They are failures that denote something is broken and you need a new HDMI cable.

No difference in Quality, whatsoever

But the thing to remember is that there is NO way that one HDMI cable would have “better picture quality” than another.
All the claims about differences in picture quality are remnants of the analog days, which were barely valid then and not at all valid now.

This is true for both Video & Audio, in fact audio has even better error correction, no way one cable is better than another.
Types of HDMI Cable

There are only 4 types of HDMI cables:
High Speed (also called Category 2) 1080p with or without Ethernet, and Standard Speed (Category 1) 1080i with or without Ethernet.

There is no difference in 100hz, 120hz, 200hz, 240hz cable. Its only 4 types of cables that we already mentioned. Everything else is a marketing gimmick. You don’t need a new HDMI cable for 3d, its all fake.

We all admire and use reopen last closed tabs on our favorite modern browsers. It comes really handy when we accidentally close a running browser tab or realize immediately after closing it that you missed something.

What if it was possible to ReOpen closed explorer windows, Applications. Thanks to UndoClose, its possible on Windows.

Windows 7 application windows has totally different way of operating, even though it maintains a list of recently opened programs and items in Start Menu, it doesn’t support bringing them up again using a hotkey.

UndoClose remembers all recently closed folders and applications, and lets you restore them in the same sequence in which they were closed using two hotkeys.

Using two hotkeys you can do pretty much all. Use Ctrl+Shift+F to open last closed folder (in Windows Explorer) and Ctrl+Shift+A, to open last closed application. You can use them multiple times to cycle through the history. You can even change the hotkeys from Settings of the application that sits silently in system tray.

Application is light weight and eats nominal RAM. No installation required, its portable across all version of Windows7.

You can already use an iPad as Secondary extended Monitor, and now you can use Android Tablet, Phone as secondary display.

Adding Multiple monitors to your setup definitely increases productivity. But it can get all tricky without use of the right software. That’s why we had prepared a list of Best Dual, Multi-Monitor Software for your PC, Mac.

ScreenSlider allows you to utilize your Android display to extend the monitor and drag your cursor through the air rather magically from display to tablet/smartphone. All you need is a Windows PC (mac osx soon) and Android tablet /phone connected to same Wifi.

How to Install & configure ScreenSlider on Android

Step 1: Purchase ScreenSlider ($1) from the Android Market. Once installed, request a download link for the ScreenSlider desktop client by giving them your e-mail address.

Step 2: Launch ScreenSlider on your Android Tablet, phone and enter a unique device name. And on the PC, Right-click the ScreenSlider icon in the System Tray and select Find devices. Double click your device in the list once it appears.

Step 3: Next, you’ll be prompted to pair your device. Enter the code displayed on your Android in order to pair device and PC.

The app is not perfect, there are glitches and its bit laggy. However, it should improve over time.

Everytime you upgrade or restore iOS version, you hate losing all the Jailbroken iOS data. This keeps you away from updating to a latest iOS, unless you collect enough courage to go ahead and wipe your device.

The main concern is losing Jailbroken data i.e. Cydia apps, settings, packages, sources, settings. Hail! now its possible to backup them all to the iCloud, which gets restored the next time you install an new iOS -> jailbreak and hit restore.

OpenBackup lets you Backup Cydia Apps, Packages, Sources, settings to iCloud on iOS 5. Its available for free on the Cydia store vi ModMyi repo.

When you initiate a backup, OpenBackup will save all your Cydia apps and their preferences to a ZIP file under var/mobile/Library/Preferences/OpenBackupFiles location, along with a plain text log file that lists all backed up packages.

iCloud sync will automatically backup this file. If iCloud is not supported on your device, you can take this backup and extract it next time to get all the apps back. It restores everything other than paid Cydia apps.

Android Market automatically restricts incompatible, un-supported apps, games from being installed on android phone / tablet. This is justified seeing that there are so many different flavor of SoCs from various hardware manufacturers that beautifully run Android.

Games use hardware acceleration with efficient Native C/c++ code. This code is often optimized for the platform and hence incompatible with others. But often, developers don’t allow relatively less compatible phones to maintain higher quality apps, and hence better rating. However, you can skip this compatibility check by spoofing your phone to be Google Nexus S. Google, by default, allows all apps to run on it’s developer phone: Nexus S.

How to Install Incompatible, Unsupported Apps from Android Market

Pre-requisite: Your android phone must be Rooted.

Step 1. Clear Market Cache & Data. Settings > Applications > All > Market > Clear data.

Step 2. Install Prop Editor from here.
or scan:

Take backup of existing build.prop file.

Step 3. Open Prop Editor click on build.prop and look for following keys and enter values corresponding to them, manually:

ro.product.model=Nexus S
ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3.4/GRJ22/121341:user/release-keys
ro.build.description=soju-user 2.3.4 GRJ22 121341 release-keys

The last one is not always required.

Step 4. When done, press menu > save. Reboot phone.

OSX renders your files beautifully in Stacks inside the Dock. What if you could get a way to arrange the folders, icons on desktop to something that looks more aesthetically pleasing.

DesktopShelves lets you add Folders as floating Shelves on Mac Desktop, and makes them quickly accessible. It lets you add two Shelves that list the content of any two folders of your choice and allow you to view and open all files within those folders. The shelves can be moved to anywhere on the desktop and appear across all spaces.

A shelf’s appearance can be changed by using one of the pre-installed themes. To change the theme, right-click the shelf and pick a design from the Change Design Shelf option.

When you mouse over an item on a shelf, the item pops out from it in a large thumbnail like preview. Double clicking the thumbnail opens the folder in Finder. Dragging & dropping files or folders on to a shelf will add them to the respective folder.

The pro version of the app allows you to add more shelves, and lets you customize more.

DesktopShelves Lite From Mac [App Store]

Alternatively, you can try Desktop wallpaper contruction Kit [$.99]

Desktop Wallpaper Construction Kit gives you more than 200 variations of the coolest desktop images with shelves this side of Cupertino. The easiest of interfaces allows you to choose a new funky Desktop Picture and click/boom/done.

Microsoft is betting it’s future on the Metro UI. Metro UI is now found on Windows 8, Windows Phone 7.x and Xbox Live.

Metro UI is sure a fresh concept for modern intuitive User interaction. Luckily enough, you can get Windows 8 Metro UI on Windows 7, thanks to Metro7 app.

Metro 7 provides instant access to built-in widgets and a custom store from where you can install more applications. Obviously, these are not same as native Windows 8 apps, but they are pretty close.

The tiles provide time and date information, access to built-in metro store, weather application, and shortcuts to numerous websites like Facebook and Badoo. You can go ahead and customize it to your needs.

Overall, Metro7 is a good application for emulating the Windows 8 MetroUI style interface on your Windows 7 desktop, however, it still seems to be under construction as some of the widgets simply lead to a blank page and many of the website shortcuts on the main interface seem to be there to fill the main interface. Metro 7 has been developed for Windows 7.

Download Metro7

You new found love OS X Lion is a pleasure to use, but you miss the days of free notification that Growl gave you in previous versions of OS X.

Growl is now available for $2 in App Store but we know, not a price that one can’t afford but often we tend to look for Free alternative, Growl Fork is the solution.

It looks like Growl, it behaves like Growl, and it is Growl Fork.

It works exactly the same, for the first run, you still have the same preferences in which you can choose the apps you want to run Growl with and choose to auto-start growl at startup.

The app is actually nothing but a recompiled older version of Growl made to support Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

For years, PC users have been deleting and then later recovering files that had been accidentally deleted.

The recycling deleted images is now possible on Android. If the deleted file is still discovered on storage, the new app called Undelete Beta attempts to restore it.

Alternatively, if you are an security freak, you can delete file securely so that its no longer accessible by anyone.

Undelete for Android, an application for root users that allows you to recover any type of deleted file from your SD card or internal storage. This is the first application of its kind on Android.

I had a chance to test drive the app on custom ROMs on Dell streak, nexus one and stock galaxy S, SII android 2.3.x. The app works great most of the time. If the file had been deleted within last 2 days or so, it was able to recover it without trouble. Generally speaking, whatever area os storage is not re-written, it can be restored.

Recovery from SD card or internal storage works the same way it happens on a PC or Mac. The app has scope of improvement, of course, but is great for what it offers for free.

App requires Root privileges, as one could expect.

[Market] Undelete Beta

More and more users are migrating to Mac OSX, the market share of 15% is a proof. But what happens to all those apps that are Windows Exclusive? Find alternatives? Not really, you can use WinOnX.

Not every app that was on windows will have an equivalent on the mac, thats why there’s a need to run windows app on OS X.

An app called WinOnX makes this a lot easier than installing Windows on a Virtualbox or VMware on your OSX. The app costs a mere $4.99, and makes things much easier.

How to Run windows application On OS X

Min Req: OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Step 1: Download WinOnX [Mac App Store].

Step 2: Open WinOnX and browse the .EXE file you want to run. This can be an installation file or a direct runnable .exe application.

That’s all, enjoy your windows apps on OS X.

Do you feel that the video you took from your mobile or handheld camera was way too shaky? Was your video missing the right Contrast, color saturation and lighting? Do you want to combine multiple videos and Trim others? YouTube can help you!

Youtube had rolled out a number of editing features last year that let you trim, drag n drop videos, add custom music. All of those features were available in TestTube. And now YouTube offers more in the new Youtube Editor.

Youtube Editor allows for the editing of all videos which haven’t yet managed to gain 1,000 views, which is the vast majority. Those which have become popular will be left intact, with a new post-edit video uploaded alongside it. You can now stabilize handheld footage, rotate a video, and boost the contrast, colors, and lighting. Clicking Google favorite ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ will do the final three things in one.

Video Editing features at a glance:

Hp’s heavy discount on TouchPad sure have attracted interests from almost everyone, even if they previously own an iPad or Android Tablet. Most users would like to be able to install Android on HP TouchPad, and the project is very much in progress.

Running Ubuntu Linux on the TouchPad has already been made possible, although its not very easy for the beginners. It involves partitioning the storage space on the tablet, and Dual booting.

You will have tha standard HP WebOS keyboard within Ubuntu, but you also attach an external bluetooth keyboard.

How to Install Ubuntu Linux on HP TouchPad

Pre-requisite: Install Preware

PreWare is an app store for homebrew apps that are not on webOS App Catalog, just like 3rd party markets on android or Cydia on iOS. For installation, you can follow Internals Wiki. To summarize, you would either need Official HP SDK and using the webOS Quick Install tool, or you can even use using a standalone installer.

1. Install Meta doctor

Refer to Guide: Set up Meta-Doctor

Summary of what you need to do:

On Mac OS X or Linux, install Git and Java runtime, install Palm Novacom software, and download the meta-doctor scripts.

Download and run the webOS Doctor.

Create an ext3fs partition on your device (chrooting), ideally it should be large enough to accomodate a Ubuntu install, 4gb min.

Then mount the ext3fs partition when your device boots. (More instructions at the PreCentral forums).

2. UbuntuChroot

Refer to Guide: UbuntuChroot

Summary:

In PreWare, make sure the WebOS Internals Testing Feeds are enabled.

Install Xecutah and Ubuntu 11.04 CHroot.

Run XServer.

Return to Xecutah and tap Ubuntu 11.04 Chroot.

Enabling Graphical Ubuntu.

If you made it to here, you will have full access to Ubuntu CLI. To get the graphical interface, use apt-get install to install Ubuntu packages. Run either of the following:

apt-get install icewm Xfce

apt-get install icewm LXDE

Running Gnome, KDE

You can install your favorite GUI its just that they are more resource hungry (more prominently RAM) and you don’t really want to kill your tablet.

App compatibility

Its obvious that you will only be able to run apps that are compiled into ARM binaries. When downloading an app, just look for ARM compatible ones. If you are a developer & find an open source app that doesn’t have a ARM binary, you can always build it for ARM architecture.

However, out of the box, standard apps like firefox, chrome (along with plugins) work well. Other apps like Eclipse, GIMP, LibreOffice office suite, Transmission bittorrent client, and VNC work.

You can also refer to this guide in case you get into trouble or get in touch with me @geeknizer or Google+.

iOS 5 introduced some basic widgets in the new Notification Center, but you can widen the scope with the Jailbreak tweak called BBSettings.

On iOS 4, SBSettings brought a similar experience, but BBSettings is only a step ahead, combining the features from UISettings as well. This makes BBSettings an ultimate tweak for Notification center.

On installing BBSettings, new widgets and toggle switches appear in Notification Center, these widgets are:

Running applications: does exactly what it says. This is similar to the list of “running apps” you get by double clicking Home button.

Favorite apps: Pin your favorite apps and they would always be available in this area for quick launch.

Performance Manager: this one is my personal fav. Performance manager displays realtime RAM and CPU usage. Process manager displays all running processes. You would also get Wi-Fi info like IP address and the SSID of the Wi-Fi network that you are connected to.

Toggles: fAll your toggles like Wifi, airplane mode, bluetooth, etc go here.

Settings: Quick access to iOS settings like Display brightness, sound volume, etc.

To get started, jailbreak your iOS 5 device and then head over to Cydia to add repo: http://cydia.pwndevteam.com/ and then look for “BBSettings”.

The permanent migration from Facebook to Google Plus may not happen for you immediately as most of your friends never made it to Plus, and to your surprise most of them didn’t even hear about it. Its a good time to actually make that happen by inviting them all in single shot, as you migrate your Facebook data including Photos, Friends to Google Plus.

How to Migrate Facebook friends to Google Plus

Facebook won’t let you export your Facebook friends to Gmail or Google Plus for their own anti-competitive reasons. But what you can do is export Facebook contacts to a new Yahoo account and then import to Google Plus. It might silly but this is the only reliable way to do it.

1. Exporting Facebook contacts: Create a new Yahoo account, if you don’t have it already. Once you’ve created an account, sign in and head to the Contacts tab. Click on “Import Contacts” and choose the Facebook option. You should now see all your Facebok friends in your Yahoo address book.

2. Importing Facebook contacts, Inviting all: Now goto Google+ Circles tab. Click “Find and Invite” and then click the Yahoo button. It’ll add all your Facebook Contacts that were previously added to your yahoo account. In Find and Invite page, add your Facebook friends to your circles and they should get the invites. You may also find all the people that already are on Plus.

Migrate Facebook Photos to Google Plus

You can even migrate all your Facebook photo albums to Picasa (hence Google Plus) using Chrome a& Firefox extensions. Install & run them, it should take couple of minutes depending your number of photos.

Migrate Facebook Videos to Google Plus

Unfortunately, this one takes some effort as you would have to download them all and re-upload. You can do this Account > Account Settings, and scroll down to “Download Your Information”. Click on “learn more” link and then Download button. It will take a while to gather your info, but you’ll receive an email when it’s done, and you can download a ZIP file full of your photos, videos and profile information.

Goto Google+, click on your profile, and go to “Videos”. Hit the “Upload New Videos” link and re-upload your videos to your Google+ profile.

Update Twitter, Facebook with Google Plus

That’s it, you are all set, Happy Plusing!

How to Get OSX Launchpad, iPad Launcher on Windows 7

Step 1. Download and unrar the file and run the exe.
Step 2. You now assign icons by clicking on desired icons. And later customize the icons.
Step 3. Configure locking (optional). This is of course a not very secure way since you can kill the app using task manager and retrieve your desktop.

Previously, we had shown you how you can install chrome OS on notebook, desktop PC using bootable USB and install Chrome OS on Virtualbox, vmware, this is the step further in that direction bringing full hadware support to MBA with nightly builds of Chromium OS.

Warning: This method does a clean install, you would lose all your data, make backups before proceeding.

How to Install Chrome OS on Macbook Air [Chromium OS]

Step 1: Download Chromium OS from hexxeh’s site here and extract it.

Step 2: Using dd, burn the download image of Chromium on a USB (check this guide)

Step 3: Plugin the USB and boot your Macbook Air along with OS X install drive.

Step 4: Hold the “C” key on your keyboard and simultaneously press the power button, moment you see the apple logo, you can now leave the “C” key.

Step 5: You would now enter wizard that guides you through installation. When done with language selection, you would enter the wizard.

Step 6. Click “Utilities” from top menu and select Terminal.

Step 7: Type the commands:

dd if=/dev/rdisk1 of=/dev/rdisk0 bs=4m count=512

Step 8: When done, hold down the power button till it powers off.

Step 9: Unplug the USB drives and now power on your Air. Wait for few seconds and you’re done.

What’s broken:

Boot times are not as good as REal chromebooks (22 seconds vs 8s)

Bluetooth doesn’t work (Coming soon)

An unofficial port of Swype is now available for the iOS platform which makes it blissful to type on iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad.

Its a new jailbreak tweak that greatly increases typing speed on all iOS devices, just like the Android friends.

As you can figure out, Swype makes typing a lot faster, since you don’t actually spend time lifting and pressing keys, movements across keys is much faster and effective. While it might take a while to get used to, speed do improve by several multiples over time.

Note: This not official version of Swype, its just a hacked version that has been made to work on iOS.

How to Install Swype on iOS: iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad

Your iOS device should be jailbroken, launch cydia and add the following repository to Cydia: wynd.x10.mx/repo.

There are more than 50 reasons to love Google+ and some of them have already started to hover around facebook.

You can get the beautiful Google Plus Circles on Facebook to manage your friends pretty easily.

Circles brings a simple drag and drop interface, making creating and modifying lists an absolute breeze. Circles reduces the pain that you get because of ever growing friend-list. Even Facebook’s Zuckerberg once said – ‘nobody wants to make lists’. But Google did it right, and why not Facebook can Haz easy lists?

A new web-app aims to bring both Google Plus’s Circles and Facebook’s lists together. Circles Hack, works well for what its designed. All you have to do is allow the app to take control of your credentials and within seconds, all your friends in boxes at the top of the screen, and a number of Circles across the bottom to which you can drag and drop friends.

Facebook’s lists had been very unpopular till now. We believe with circle hack coming to the platform, facebook users would start creating them more easily than ever.

If you love Photography and/or Videography, you know the pain of shaky hands we all have.

Truth be told, our own fingers and the snap of an SLR mirror give cameras the shakes even when they’re locked down on a tripod. Luckily enough, we got Image stabilization built into modern DSLR lenses that compensates the movement to stabilize the image.

How Image Stabilization Works

Modern DSLRs and video cameras have gyroscopes and accelerometers embedded that detect jerky and shaky movements and provide the input to circuitry that takes action to compensate the shake. A floating lens element sits inside the camera near the lens that moves to and fro to compensate by moving in opposite direction. Checkout the video below after a break:

When Image stabilization can be harmful

Sometimes image stabilization technology can actually deteriorate the image stabilization, especially when used along with tripod. What happens is that Image stabilization mechanism tries to overcompensates and moves around more than necessary. It tries to resist motion which was actually intentional. However, newer smart image stabilization are way better at handling this. So the moral of the story is that turn off image stabilization on older cameras when using a tripod, you should be good with modern ones.

However, by default, there is no support for assigning a custom gesture to Trackpads.

MagicPrefs lets you create custom gestures as well as override existing ones to add new Multitouch gestures to your Macbook trackpad or Mac Pro trackpad. The custom Multitouch gestures hence added are powerful and precise that make the experience nuisance-free.

MagicPrefs can take upto five fingers and support all types of taps, clicks, touches, swiping, rotating, and pinching actions.
