We love softkeyboards on iPhone and Androids but when it gets to some serious content input, you need a physical keyboard. You can either get an external Bluetooth keyboard to get things going but its far less portable and intuitive.

SmartKeyboard takes the best of iPad 2 SmartCover and brings on to iPhone, iPod Touch keyboard. This keyboard snaps on to your iPhone, iPod Touch, just over the soft keyboard and works just like a physical keyboard. You get the tactile feedback of a real keyboard, without losing the portability. It even lights up with backlight when dark, which is actually the lcd screen’s back light.

Just like Smart cover, it sticks to your iOS device and can serve multiple purposes.

Get a preview of the prototype in the video below:

Product would be launched soon. Updates on official twitter account.

You can jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 with Redsn0w, PwnageTool [tethered], the news for redsn0w jailbreak comes from MuscleNerd of Dev Team

Before you proceed:

This is a Tethered Jailbreak using , Untethered would be coming in a week’s time.

This method prevents baseband from updating, so you can preserve your Unlock.

If you’ve already updated to iOS 4.3.5 from iTunes, you are out of luck for Unlock. You can still proceed with jailbreak, however.

Pre-requisite: Download iOS 4.3.5 for iPhone, Pwnage tool 4.3.3, PwnageTool bundle, Tetheredboot util

Step 1. Extract PwnageTool bundle, copy PwnageTool app to applications and right click “Show package contents”.

Step 2. Browse to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/ and place the .bundle file you extracted in step 1.

Step 3. Run PwnageTool in expert mode, select your device (iPhone of course) and proceed to next screen.

Step 4. Browse and select .ipsw firmware you downloaded for your iPhone and on the next screen you can customize as per your will. When satisfied, hit Build.

Step 5: When build completes, follow the onscreen instructions to put your iPhone in DFU mode. When done, close PWnageTool and run iTunes and shift+restore the custom firmware bundle.

Your iPhone is Jailbroken!

Booting into Tethered Mode

Since its a tethered Jailbreak, you will have to plug it to your computer USB and run teteheredboot util on every reboot. So next time you reboot, follow the instructions below:

Step 6. Rename your .ipsw to .zip and extract it to a directory. Goto /Firmware/dfu/ and copy kernelcache.release.n90 and iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu from tetheredboot utility directory.

Step 7. Make sure your device is plugged to your computer and turned off. Now run these commands in terminal (assuming that you extracted tetheredboot to Desktop):

sudo -s

/Users/geeknizer/Desktop/tetheredboot/tetheredboot
/Users/geeknizer/Desktop/tetheredboot/iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu
/Users/geeknizer/Desktop/tetheredboot/kernelcache.release.n90

Use “tetheredboot -i”and “iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu -k” instead if it doesn’t work.

Step 8. You’ll be asked to enter phone into DFU mode, follow onscreen instructions, you should see “Exiting libpois0n” on the terminal. Your device is now iBooting Tethered. have fun!

You can find several torrent clients for your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad but rarely any one of them deliver the performance while downloading the requested torrent. They are either too slow or idiotically low on features. After testing almost all the torrent clients on iOS, we believe iTransmission is the one you need to get on your Jailbroken device.

While downloading files of gigabytes size is silly thing to do on iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone, downloading small files like apps or music via torrents perfectly makes sense.

How to Install iTransmission Torrent client

You can get started by downloading the .ipa file and install it manually using installous and sync via iTunes. You can do by adding source
cydia.hackulo.us/
repository in Cydia (Go to Manage > Sources). Then doublick the IPA file and sync iTunes with your device.

How to use iTransmission with torrents

All you have to do is copy the link to the
.torrent
file or magnet link, and Open iTransmission and hit the plus + button to add it. When the download completes, you can use any filemaager (like iFile) or SSH to transfer it to your PC or whatever.

iTransmission Features:

Adding task from both torrent URL or magnet.

Transmission’s web interface.

Automatic port mapping and forwarding (UPnP) for users behind routers.

Choosing which network interface (Cellular network or WiFi) to use.

Connection and speed limits

Pretty UI

Set speed limits

edit how many people can connect to you.

iTransmission is free and open source, works on iOS 4.

iPad’s mobile safari browser is pretty good but it d0esn’t support tabs from the Chrome browser world. However, a neat app brings Chrome, Tabs on iPad.

iChromy brings Chrome to iPad, well sort of, giving the goodness of the tabs sitting nicely at the top of the screen. It also saves space by making address bar also act as a search bar, just like chrome. It saves space and easier to use.

iChromy also includes a built-in ‘read later’ function just like Instapaper and other sharing options.

iChromy is available for Free in iTunes app store, works on ipad iOS 4.2 or later, go ahead and try it out.

Here’s a demo:

Update: PhoneitiPad Tweak to enable phone calling is now available.

As per the developers:

A hack that will change the game. Can you imagine turn your iPad to a fully functional phone.

With No Special Hardware all what you need is Jailbroken iPad 3G and your iPad 3G will do anything you expect from iPhone… Phone Calls, SMS, FaceTime by Phone Number… ETC

This could have been considered a spoof it had come from any random guy, but because the developers are renown and famous for beautiful mods on iPhone in the past. We are positive about this, and hope to see it sometime soon.

RecognizeMe comes from the developers of 3DBoard, the interactive 3D homescreen on iPhone, and is available in Cydia market for $6.99 via BigBoss repo. So if you feel you are too lazy to type in the password to unlock your iPHone, or just wish to try out the fun, its worth buy. The app can be used with all devices having the front camera: iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, iPad 2 (when jailbreak is out).

RecognizeMe is the first of its kind facial recognition on iPHone, and its not perfect, but does a decent job identifying you. If you are looking to replace the passcode with facial recognition, you might find it slow and less intuitive. However, the app can be trained via settings to recognize different kinds of facial perspectives.

You cannot adjust dim timeout, reduce screen timeout to low intervals, etc, resulting in poor battery management.

ScreenDimmer is a jailbreak mod for the iOS 4.x, iOS 3.x that lets you manage various brightness and backlight settings on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

ScreenDimmer can be customized via the standard settings apps. You can toggle between settings that let you specify screen dim timeout in seconds, or turn off backlight totally. Like android, you can also chose to keep the screen ON while plugged-in and even lock the device moment its unplugged. If you’re looking to stretch out a little more battery life from your jailbroken iDevice, keeping the screen dim or the backlight off entirely is a good way to do it.

Features Summary:

Can turn the display’s backlight of

Dims the screen after a user defined time

Doesn’t dim the screen if the battery is being charged

Doesn’t dim if an app needs the screen (navigagtion software, video players, .)

Option to disalbe AutoLock if device is charging/locked

Option to disable lock directly after reboot/respring

Ability to exclude apps from dimming

Configuration interface in the Settings app

The app costs $2 in the Cydia app store (Bigboss repo) and is worth it if you worry too much about the battery life.

A large number of iPhones still remain carrier locked as they await for a Jailbreak solution for the unlock of the latest Basebands, bootloaders. Honestly speaking, such users hardly had options till date.

There are two new ways of Unlocking iPhone 4 without Jailbreaking it.

First, you can get your IMEI whitelisted for a price from a GSM phone source.

Second, You can use a SIM card unlocker, which just works.

Method I: Getting IMEI whitelisted

It works by adjusting your phone’s IMEI to work on any carrier. An IMEI is a number unique to every GSM phone that allows your carrier to identify your device. The service, from GSM Phone Source, will cost you $180. That’s a hefty price, but worth it would make it work on any GSM carrier. When you sign up for the service, you provide them with your phone’s IMEI. They’ll email you within 48 hours to confirm your phone has been unlocked. After another sync with iTunes, you can then insert any GSM sim card into your iPhone.

It is confirmed that it works today however, there is a catch: There’s always a chance that Apple can put your IMEI back in the registry and negate the whole process, so use this service at your own risk.

CutYourSim is a very similar service, but again, try it at your own risk.

Method II: SIM card Unlocker

This is a much cheaper and safer bet at $48. The card comes from Rebel SIM Card and will allow you to load any SIM you want into your iPhone 4.

It comes in two flavors:

The cheaper option has an tiny antenna that awkwardly sticks out the side.

For around $17 more, you can get a SIM special tray that replaces the one that comes with your iPhone. ($65)

Rebel’s use of a custom SIM tray lets you update the SIM Software even if Apple redesigns the iPhone. Check out the product page to make sure your phone is compatible.

iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of Ultrasn0w to fix issues with signal on iPhone 4, 3GS on the old baseband.

Note: Ultrasn0w 1.2.1 unlocks the older baseband on iOS 4.3.1 custom firmware. This will not work for newer baseband, and is essentially a fix for signal bar. It only fixes the compatibility and signal bar issues on the existing devices, which are jailbroken (with preserved basebands: 01.59.00 / 04.26.08 / 05.11.07 / 05.12.01 / 05.13.04 / 06.15.00) on iOS 4.3.1 using PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze.

How to Unlock iOS 4.3.1 iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS

1. MAke sure your iPhone is jailbroken with Sn0wbreeze or Pwnagetool.

2. Run Cydia > manage > sources > Edit > Add > http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com and hit the Add Source button.

3. Now search for Ultrasn0w and install it. Restart when done.

If you are on a newer bootloader or baseband, there’s no software unlock available, so you can stop looking for one and may be you can try a Hardware based, Jailbreak-free Unlock for iPhone 4.

Pre-requisites:

Install PwnageTool 4.2

iOS 4.3.1 for your iDevice

iTunes 10.2.1

Mac OS X

tetheredboot utility

PwnageTool bundle for iOS 4.3.1 (includes Universal Ramdisk Fixer) (For TETHERED Jailbreaks)

PwnageTool 4.3 (ONLY for UNTETHERED Jailbreaks)

Before you begin, please read the following carefully:

Jailbreak also Hacktivates your iPhone 4.

There is no unlock for the new baseband on iOS 4.3.1.

iPad 2 users on iOS 4.3 should stay away from iOS 4.3.1 for the meantime.

This is a Tethered Jailbreak.

Your baseband will not be touched or upgraded during restore process.

Phase I: Modifying the PwnageTool for iOS 4.3.1 Jailbreak

Step 1: Extract the pwnagetool bundle .zipuse the bundle corresponding to your device.e.g. for iPhone 4 use iPhone3,1_4.3.1_8G4.bundle. Select this bundle and move to desktop.

2: Goto /Applications > PwnageTool right click >Show package contents and Navigate to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/ and paste iPhone3,1_4.3.1_8G4.bundle file in this location. Your pwnage tool is now ready.

Phase II Creating Custom RAM disk

3: From the PwnageTool bundle package locate “Universal Ramdisk Fixer” and install it.

Phase III: Building Custom iOS 4.3.1 Firmware

4: Download iOS 4.3.1 dor your device (google it) and start PwnageTool in “expert mode”. Select your device from the pictures.

5: Browse for iOS 4.3.1 firmware for your device and then select “build” to create custom 4.3.1 firmware file and wait for the process to finish.

Phase IV: Restoring custom iOS 4.3 Firmware to your device.

6: Bring your device to DFU mode. Use the instructions below:

Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds

Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds

You device should now be in DFU mode

7: Open iTunes and restore using the custom firmware you prepared in Phase III. Be patient while your device is restored. After the process is over your iOS device will be jailbroken on iOS 4.3.1.

Phase V: Booting in Tethered Mode

As there is no untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 yet, we will have to boot it into a tethered jailbroken state.

8: Unzip tetheredboot utility and copy two files from the custom iOS 4.3.1 firmware namely: kernelcache.release.n90 and iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu. Hint: you can rename your custom iOS 4.3.1 from .ipsw to .zip and extract.

Copy kernelcache.release.n90 and iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu files from /Firmware/dfu/ to tetheredboot folder.

9: Power off your iOS device and run terminal on your mac.

sudo -s

cd /Users/fx/Desktop/tetheredboot/

tetheredboot iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu kernelcache.release.n90

Replace “fx” with your user.

NOTE: If the above fails, try ‘tetheredboot -i ibss -k kernel’ instead of ‘tetheredboot ibss kernel’:

You should now see some code running in the Terminal window, at some point, it will ask you to enter DFU mode. Follow the same steps as earlier for DFU mode.

Now wait for your device to boot, Terminal at this point will be showing “Exiting libpois0n” message. After some processing and wait, your iOS device will be booted in a jailbroken tethered mode. enjoy!

We will still have to wait for a long while before we get a software unlock for iPHone 4 Baseband 2.10.04, 3.10.01but Gevey SIM is our next hope for iPhone 4 baseband unlock.

The Gevey SIM transposes the SIM card signals while they are delivered to the baseband hardware. As a result, Unlocking iPhone is a child’s play.

How to Unlock iPhone 4 2.10.04 3.10.01

1. Just Install the Gevey SIM and then call 112, once the call connects you hang up.

2. Toggle Airport mode on and off and that’s it.

On one side the unlock is dirt easy, while on the darker side of the method, dialing the emergency number without any reason is punishable offense in some countries. Another drawback of the method is that a firmware update or carrier update will again lock the iPhone 4.

How Gevey SIM iPhone 4 Unlock works

SIM card holds many different types of information, but the part most involved with carrier lock is the IMSI number, which is a unique code that corresponds to your account in the mobile carrier’s database.
When the iPhone baseband is loaded into memory, it checks the MCC and MNC against its own network lock state stored in the seczone. If the combination is allowed, the cell radio is activated and vice versa.
The earliest iPhone baseband revisions only check IMSI twice following a restart, therefore it is very easy to send spoof information in order to bypass the check. Nevertheless, the baseband was soon updated to validate SIM more aggressively and the method soon became obsolete.

A sample IMSI might look like this

310 150 987654321

To guard against eavesdropping that plagued pre-GSM cellular networks, the initial connection to a network does not only involve IMSI, but a 4-byte TMSI to identify each handset before IMSI is sent processed.

The base station then send a 16-byte nonce to the handset, where is signed with a 128bit DES key (Ki, stored encrypted on the SIM) and sent back. The network checked the string against their database and allow that number to connect to the network.

You see, the IMSI is not essential; as long as your key is valid, you will be able to get service. This is exactly what the various SIM hacks where a fake IMSI is sent along with the correct key. The IMSI is redirected to another network and lost, and the signed nonce usually allows you to register (without cross-checking IMSI)

With this technique, “Data Roaming” needs to be enabled to allow data connection because the baseband is acting on the assumption that the phone is roaming however the network do correctly recognise the phone as a home user. Further details here.

What does it mean to unlockers?

It works if A.your network handles 112 calls properly according to the GSM standard; B.they are tolerant to TSMI spoofing and does not actively validate your SIM again for incoming calls.

Unlike its ancestors, the i4 SIM interposer is not a drop-in-and-forget device. The exact precedure must be performed should the device restart, lose reception for an extended period of time or move to another PLMN. In all situations the TMSI expires and has to be obtained again. Theoretically it is possible for a daemon to automate the process similar to ZeroG, but that only makes thing more convoluted.

It is, without question, unethical or downright illegal to use the technique anywhere 112 is a legitmate emergency number. Not a huge issue in China where the number is only used for informative purpose; the providers has no immediate incentive to fix the loophole.

All firmware/baseband combinations for the i4 up to iOS4.3 are vulnerable, however the exploit may be patched in any future software updates or via the carrier. If apple can influence providers to block Cydia it is not impossible for them to press them to fix the exploit. The only way to permanently unlock your baseband is via NCK.

SIM interposer should not harm your phone hardware, however your network could request IMEI and identify your device during the emergency call. Your identity cannot be faked and it is possible that they will ban your account. There is a reason why SIM cards remain legally the property of the service provider: you are not supposed to tamper with them without breaching contract.

Notwithstanding all the problems, SIM interposer does not cause any battery drain since it is only active transiently, nor would it cause signal loss because it does not change cellular transmission other than the initial validation step.

Conclusion:
An overpriced (US$50), unreliable and legally questionable mod; works for some but your mileage may vary; get it if you are desperate or wait for the 40-bit NCK hack by dev team.

Comex discovered that the app was checking if the operating system allowed it to execute an unsigned binary, and if it did, the book wouldn’t open. The good news is that both PwnageTool 4.2 and Sn0wbreeze 2.2 have been updated to include a fix, but what if you’re already jailbroken using Redsn0w 0.9.6, 0.9.7 or GreenPois0n?

A quick fix is available on Cydia, that fixes iBooks.

More recently, Saving SHSH blobs also helps in getting untethered jailbreak, most popularly, this is used with tools like Redsn0w (v0.9.7)

TinyUmbrella 4.21.08 is now available for download to save SHSH blobs for iOS 4.3 beta 3 or iOS 4.3b3.

Download TinyUmbrella 4.21.08

Mac OS X | Windows | Linux (pending)

Firmware Umbrella

Once you ‘upgrade’, apple doesn’t let you downgrade to older iOS firmware. The way apple does this is by taking the firmware version files and ECID and generate a hash that ONLY APPLE can generate. iTunes packages up this hash and sends it to your device. Your device checks the information and verifies the signature making your device look for Authenticity. Apple stops signing older firmwares once a new one is out, henc eolder firmwares stop working.

How Firmware Umbrella fixes it

FirmwareUmbrella sends the same exact request that iTunes sends Apple when requesting the signatures for your device to be restored. It saves SHSH signatures for your device received from the Apple server and let to downgrade OS indefinitely.

TinyTSS

TinyTSS is a small java app that acts as your very own signature service. When iTunes verifies thefirmware restore for the devices listed below, it checks if you are allowed to restore to the version you are requesting. With TinyTSS + the shsh blob file(s) you obtained with Umbrella, you will be able to restore to the version of those shsh files forever!

TinyUmbrella = Firmware Umbrella + TinyTSS

TinyUmbrella Supports all iOS 4 devices:

iPhone 4

iPhone 3GS, 3G

iPod Touch 3G, 2G

iPad

How to Save SHSH blobs iOS 4.x with Tiny Umbrella

The method required you to have previous SHSH blobs saved and was pretty complex. Now with Greenp0ison, Untethered jailbreak iPhone 4, 3G iOS 4.2.1 is fairly easy as it does NOT require SHSH blobs for iOS 4.2b3.

Before you continue:

Supported devices: iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G 3G 2G, iPhone 3GS (any bootrom), iPad on iOS 4.2.1

Greenpois0n recommends a clean iOS 4.2.1 restore. However, if you depend on unlock, do NOT update to iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1 because UltraSn0w doesn’t support new basebands yet. iPhone 4 users can update to iOS 4.2.1 while preserving baseband with Tinyumbrella.

Tethered 4.2.1 redsn0w Jailbreakers can just run greeenpois0n over it for untethered jailbreak. In case you run into problems, restore.

Greenpois0n jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 OTB (out of the box) iPod Touch, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G

2. Run Greepois0n and hit the “Jailbreak” button.

4. Greenpis0n will identify your iphone, ipod touch, ipad in DFU mode and start with the Jailbreaking process. Once completed, Greenpois0n will show the “Complete” button and your iPhone would be jaikbroken with lots of commands being sent.

5. Let it reboot, congrats! you’ve successfully jailbroken your iPhone 4 or 3GS on iOS 4.2.1. Next open the Loader app from your iPhone home screen and install Cydia.

Bingo! Now you’ve untethered jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch.

iPhone 4 users with preserved baseband can proceed with unlock using ultrasn0w.
