As per Apple:

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:

- Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep
- Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart
- Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming

Apple introduced iPhone OS 3.1 almost exactly one month ago. This had been among the fastest updates from Apple on iPhone potentially they heard customer’s voice faster this time. iPhone 3.1 was buggy though brought some new features Genius recommendation for apps, Genius Mixes for music and purchasing of pre-cut ringtones.

The Jailbreak isn’t out yet from Dev Team, the previous iPhone 3.1 Jailbreak will not work for 3.1.2 update.

iPhone Dev Team has posted the updates about the latest iPhone firmware 3.1.2.

• PwnageTool and redsn0w are not yet compatible with 3.1.2
• There is no estimated release time for compatible tools (please don’t bug us about this).
• Any information we have regarding this update will be posted here.

It has already tested the tool on its iPhone firmware 3.1.2 update 3GS original and was able to run the Jailbreak.

GeoHot’s  Blackra1n works quiet well on the 3.1.2 firmware that Apple has just released!

It has already tested the tool on its iPhone firmware 3.1.2 update 3GS original and was able to run the Jailbreak. Blackra1n still has trouble with the iPod Touch 3G so you probably will not be released by today but it is a matter of few days and not worry.

GeoHot said that you can upgrade your iPhone (3G and 3GS) in the original firmware 3.1.2 and later you can run with her Jailbreak Tool. However it is still not 100% sure so our call is to avoid risks and stupid to wait a bit. It still not perfet, will be stable very soon and we would then publish the Tutorial.

NOTE: This guide is for those of you who are on a jailbroken iPhone 3GS firmware 3.0 or 3.0.1. If you have updated to iPhone 3.1 from iTunes but have saved your SHSH file to Cydia then you can still jailbreak but you’ll first have to downgrade your firmware back to 3.0 or 3.0.1. In other cases, you are locked out.

First thing we need is Custom Firmware: Google for iPhone 3GS Custom 3.1 download or “iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore”, else download below:

Let’s  Roll:

Step 1: Preparing your iTunes

Launch your iTunes9.x (upgrade to latest), connect your iPhone and sync to backup all your data.

Once download of the required .ipsw file completes, Move it to the following location:

Windows 7:
“C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\”

Vista
“C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\”

XP
“C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Update\”

Now, Re-open iTunes,  you will be prompted to install the new firmware 3.1, DO NOT UPDATE from this prompt. Just close this dialog.

Step 2:  Restoring

Now, lets restore the 3.1 custom Firmware. To do this, press and hold left “Shift” button on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update”) button in the iTunes and then release the “Shift” button.

New window popsup asking you to locate your custom firmware. After selecting, iTunes will start decompressing and then will install. This is an automatic process, sit back and relax.

When it finishes your iPhone 3GS is unlocked and Fully Jailbroken.

Step 3: Syncing (optional)

Once you are done with the unlocking and jailbreak process. You can now restore all your settings, apps, music, contacts and photos to the newly installed firmware version 3.1 by restoring the backup that you made in Step 1 from iTunes.

Troubleshooting: Follow this guide if you get any iTunes Errors 16xx (1601,1602, 1603, 1604)

The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (16xx).

Well, there is a way out. iH8Sn0w has released a tool called iREB (iTunes Restore Error Bypasser) for both Windows and Macs which can give you your, Custom Firmware Restores, Hope back. The latest version of this program supports iPhone 3.1 firmware running on the  iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPod touch 1G.

Here’s Step by Step how to install it.

Step 1: Start iTunes and put your phone into DFU mode:

Putting phone in DFU Mode: Press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time. After exactly 10 seconds release the Power button. Continue holding the home button until you iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. At this point your iPhone/iPod touch screen will remain black.

Step 2: Now close iTunes and Start iREB on your PC/Mac.

Step 3: Select your device and wait for a few seconds till you get white or a red screen on your iPhone.

Step 4: Open iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore”  button in the iTunes and then release the “Shift” button. Select a custom .ipsw file and restore it. Your 16xx errors are gone.

Note:  iREB is not directly for jailbreaking. It is for indirect jailbreaks i.e. restoring to custom .ipsw firmware files via iTunes without any errors.

Update: Jailbreak Unlock iPhone 3G 3GS 05.11.07 using blackra1n with blacksn0w

Pre-requisite: To downgrade your baseband from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08, you must first jailbreak your iPhone 3G running firmware 3.1 by following guide unlocking iPhone 3G, 2G on OS 3.1.

Step 1: Go to “Cydia” and Search for “Fuzzyband” and then install it.

Step 2: Start Fuzzyboard app and click on Downgrade button to start downgrading your Baseband from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08.

Step 4: Now, your iPhone 3G is having an unlockable baseband. Now proceed with Unlocking with Ultrasn0w.

NOTE: Downgrading of baseband will only work on phones that have the 05.08 (5.8) Bootloader. If you do not know your bootloader,  run Fuzzyband and it will report the version to you.

So here we go thanking Dev Team for releasing new Pwnage tool, which now makes it possible to Jailbreak, Unlock iPhone 3.1  iPhone 3G users are advised to use Pwnage tool for retaining their current baseband.

Start these Downloads, as you read on:

iPhone 2G OS 3.1 Custom Firmware : part 1 part 2 (HJSplit) or part1 part2 (WinRAR)

iPhone 3G OS 3.1 Custom Firmware : part 1 part 2 or part1 part2 part3 (HJSplit)

Don’t get confused by “or” choose either of them.

All you have to do is download a custom firmware hotlinked below this custom firmware is created with Dev team Pwnage Tool that strips out the baseband update from the upgrade.

Read these Guidelines by Dev Team, before touching the firmware on your iPhone:

If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates. (in case you have done this, follow Downgrade baseband guide.)

If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw

This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.

If you already updated your iPhone 3G to 3.1 non pwned or Apple firmware then you can’t enjoy UltraSn0w anymore.

For iPhone 2G, follow first 2 steps and for iPhone 3G follow 3rd step aswell.

Golden Rule: During the restore, if you get into any trouble, then put your phone in DFU mode and try again all over again.

Let’s Rock n Roll:

The files you downloaded above are split using HJSplit or Rar. Download HJSplit to join both the files – HJSplit for Windows and HJSplit for Mac. Winrar, probably, you already have it.

Step 1: Preparing your iPhone

Launch your iTunes9 (upgrade if you already haven’t), connect your iPhone and put it inphone in DFU mode by following instructions.

• Turn the phone off
• Hold power and Home buttons together for exactly 10 seconds
• Release power, while holding home button till the pc detects USB device.

A Display set to OFF shows that you were successful. If this doesn’t work for you searh for “iphone DFU” on Youtube.

Step 2:  Restoring

For Mac, Click on ‘Ok’ to the prompt displayed and hold Option key and then hit Restore button. For Windows, hold the shift key and then hit the restore button.

New window popsup asking you to locate your custom firmware. After selecting, iTunes will start decompressing and then will install. This is an automatic process, sit back and relax.

When it finishes, if you are on iPhone 2G, you are done. Your phone is jailbroken (with cydia installed) and Unlocked.

For iPhone 3G, there’s just one more thing. ROFL like Steve Jobs always says.

Step 3: Installing Ultrasn0w (for 3G only)

Launch cydia,  Manage > sources > Edit > Add “http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/”. This is the source for Ultrasn0w unlock for 3G.

After your sources refresh, search for “Ultrasn0w” and install it. Then Reboot . When it starts again, wait on the slide to unlock screen for say  10 seconds and after reaching home screen wait another 10. If you don’t see the your network working, reset network settings and try reinserting the SIM card and wait another 10 seconds.

You should be done.

Apple today promised that the upcoming iPhone firmware 3.1 will be the first one to officially support Augmented Reality Apps that support the iPhone 3GS’ camera.

What we are not sure of at this moment is whether Apple meant just 3GS or all of them. But I guess it would be just 3GS as Augmented Reality demands more processing power and good camera. If you are new to Augmented Reality, check the related stuff here.

Why Augmented Reality is needed on iPhone

AR can take the virtual life into Real life. AR is believed to be much better and tougher than Virtual reality. iPhone developers and users excited by the prospect of augmented reality apps, which overlay information and controls on top of real-world objects seen through a camera, have been told to sit tight until the next release of the iPhone OS exits beta.

Although iPhone 3.1 has so far only been known to expose some video camera controls for developers, third-party producer Acrossair was told by Apple that the future release would be needed for its Nearest Tube and future Nearest Subway apps to work properly.

The apps are already highly dependent on the built-in compass and auto-focusing camera of the iPhone 3GS, both of which are needed to alternately recognize the direction the iPhone is facing as well as to get a detailed enough look at a subject to tag it with information. As a demonstration of the technology, Acrossair’s software can show the subway stops visible in a particular direction and their distance relative to the user.

Unofficially, iPhone 3.1 is anticipated to be ready by early September.

Here’s the key points:

* Video editing on iPhone 3GS wont overwrite the clip over the original when you are editing a clip.
* iPhone will now vibrate whenever you switch to the mode where you can move and arrange icons on the iPhone home screen.
* “Fraud Protection” toggle has been added to settings under Safari.
* iPhone boot time is now faster.
* Voice Control over Bluetooth.
* New APIs to enable third party apps to access videos and edit them.

* Updated AT&T profile to 4.2

* Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01
* Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.

Verdict:

Most the of the fixes/updates are irrelevant for 99.9% of the iPhone users, none of them is critical. Not worth an upgrade unless you are on iPhone 3G S. Holdon till 3.2 where you can expect more new features for odler iPhone generations as well. 3.1 Targets fixes which look like severity 4 or 5.
