There hav been a number of unofficial port for Siri to iOS 5 devices, but none of them were actually legal.

chpwn has actually figured out a legal way of installing Siri on iPod Touch 3rd, 4th gen, iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, or in other words any jailbroken iOS 5 device. The app is called Spire and is available via Cydia.

Disclaimer: It’s not very easy. Difficulty level: moderate

Pre-requisite: Your iOS 5 device should be jailbroken.

You will need to have your own Siri proxy setup, and an iPhone 4S (at least initially) for authentication to get it running on your older-gen iOS device. chpwn explains:

Spire is not a complete solution. Apple still requires authorization to use Siri, so information from an iPhone 4S is still required. To insert this information, Spire allows you to enter your own proxy server address. I’ve put up a list of my ideas on how you might get access to a proxy; hopefully you can figure something out.

To get a Siri proxy, chpwn suggests:

westbaer’s SiriProxy fork

Own an iPhone 4S too: Maybe you already own an iPhone 4S, and just want Siri on another device of yours. This is simple; you can just use the above proxy yourself.

Find a friend: Maybe your friend has an iPhone 4S and will let you use their authentication tokens (maybe in exchange for some cool SiriProxy plugins). Then, you can share the authentication. Or, maybe you gave your relative your old iPhone when you got your iPhone 4S: now you can share your token and give them Siri.

Pay up: It’s very likely that soon we will see for-pay services online to rent you some space on a Siri proxy, attached to one of their iPhone 4S devices. I haven’t seen anything like this yet, but I’ll keep my eye out, and I would encourage anyone who is interested to set something like this up.

And now for something completely different: As I suggested earlier, you might be able to replace Siri entirely. A simple method might be to use Google Chrome’s speech “API” hooked up to some code to decode the Siri requests and parse Google’s result. Or, someone could hook it up to some logic backends like many of the clones available on Android: the possibilities are endless.

Spire is available via Bigboss repo (which is default in Cydia). Go ahead and install it.

If you’ve already Jailbroken iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, its time to get the phones free of the network boundaries.

With Ultrasn0w 1.2.5, you can unlock iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone, iPhone 3GS on the following basebands:

01.59.00

04.26.08

05.11.07

05.13.01

05.12.01

06.15.00

You can check your baseband version under Settings > General > About.

Note: If you bought iphone recently, chances are there that it has a newer baseband, which is Unlockable. Verify the baseband version before you proceed.

iPhone Dev team has workedreally hard to get this one out as fast as possible.

How to Unlock iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS using Ultrasn0w

Step 1: Launch ‘Cydia’ application and click on ‘Manage’ tab, followed by ‘Sources’ and then ‘Add’. Add the following URL – http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com – then select ‘Add Source‘.

Step 2: Cydia would now verify this source and refresh its available lists. Go back and install Ultrasn0w, it will automatically unlock your iPhone.

After showcasing couple of hacks around Siri, Siri protocol explained out in open, here comes the unofficial Siri port as a Cydia tweak Siri0us, available for iPHone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch.

Siri0us – is free on the Cydia store and provides Siri dictation on iPhone 4, 3GS. We won’t see a full port anytime soon coz there are couple of legal issues, thanks to Apple’s control freaks.

Siri dictation works on all iOS5 devices. To install Siri0us, add the http://apt.if0rce.com repository to Cydia and search for the app “Siri0us”.

Note: In case you encounter continuos resprings, use a SSH tool to remove the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AssistantServices.framework file.

The app works great on all iOS 5 devices, without any trouble.

Here’s Siri0us on iPhone 4:

iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of Ultrasn0w to fix issues with signal on iPhone 4, 3GS on the old baseband.

Note: Ultrasn0w 1.2.1 unlocks the older baseband on iOS 4.3.1 custom firmware. This will not work for newer baseband, and is essentially a fix for signal bar. It only fixes the compatibility and signal bar issues on the existing devices, which are jailbroken (with preserved basebands: 01.59.00 / 04.26.08 / 05.11.07 / 05.12.01 / 05.13.04 / 06.15.00) on iOS 4.3.1 using PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze.

How to Unlock iOS 4.3.1 iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS

1. MAke sure your iPhone is jailbroken with Sn0wbreeze or Pwnagetool.

2. Run Cydia > manage > sources > Edit > Add > http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com and hit the Add Source button.

3. Now search for Ultrasn0w and install it. Restart when done.

If you are on a newer bootloader or baseband, there’s no software unlock available, so you can stop looking for one and may be you can try a Hardware based, Jailbreak-free Unlock for iPhone 4.

Few high end DSLRs offer you a feature to shoot 360 Panoramic Pictures, the same is now made possible on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS with an called “360 Panorama“, available on the App Store. These Panoramic pictures can later be used as iPhone wallpapers.

360 Panorama has a great set of features like a 360 view grid powered by the iPhone 4’s gyroscope to accurately capture what you’re viewing in real time. To add to the proper lighting, the app has built-in light sensing, to fix over exposures to bright light sources.

When you are done shooting your 360 view image, you can view it live as a 360 view — Just by rotating the phone, the gyroscope will automatically pan the live shot. Once done, youd can share the saved image to most social sites, email it . iPhone 3GS just works, but due to lack of Gyroscope, it would be limited.

360 Panorama features:

Real-time panorama creation

Instantly save to the Camera Roll – no waiting for image stitching

Create full 360 degree panoramas in under 20 seconds

Fully supports the new high-resolution Retina displays

iPod touch (4th generation) is now fully supported

As of version 3

For the first time ever on iPhone/iPod Touch, you can instantly share immersive 360 Views! Anywhere!

Tweet your panoramas in seconds with new Twitter integration

Augmented reality (AR) style viewing! Just hold your phone upright to engage (gyroscope required)!

iPod Touch users: Greatly expanded field of view (FOV)!

Dynamically adjusts to scene light levels for crisp panoramas even at night

Better motion tracking on 3GS – no more need to realign, ever!

Dramatically improved accuracy and more vibrant colors

GPS location tagging

Golden Master version is targeted for developers, and buggy. Not recomended for end users. Still power users can try.

Pre-requisites:

Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 (Windows | Mac)

iTunes 10.1

iDevice with iOS 4.2.1 updated using iTunes.

Jailbreaking iOS 4.2.1

Open RedSn0w 0.9.6b2, click on “select” & browse for iOS 4.1. When the firmware is identified, it will start execution.

DONT select “Install Cydia” and then click Next.

Select the tweaks you wish to have and hit next. Redsn0w will patch and install some files to your iDevice.

Follow the onscreen instructions to put your iDevice in DFU mode when prompted and your device will be properly jailbreak in seconds.

iOS 4.2 has just hit beta and there are workarounds to Jailbreak it. You can now JailBreak your iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.2 with older baseband and unlock it later using Ultrasn0w.

With this Jailbreaking guide, you will be able to Hacktivate iPhone 3GS and Cydia can be installed via SSH.

Important: This bundle is meant for iPhone 3GS with old bootrom only. New bootrom users will have to wait for the upcoming GreenPoison tool, which would be released very soon.

The following step by step guide will help you guide on how to patch the existing version of PwnageTool so that it can jailbreak iOS 4.2 Beta on iPhone 3GS. Your device should be jailbroken atleast once with any of these tools redsn0w, PwnageTool, Blackra1n or Sn0wbreeze.

Install OpenSSH from here:http://apt.telesphoreo.org/cydia/debs/openssl_0.9.8k-9_iphoneos-arm.deb and here http://apt.telesphoreo.org/cydia/debs/openssh_5.2p1-8_iphoneos-arm.deb/ so that you can copy and install stuff without Cydia.

Step 1: Download PwnageTool 4.01 and latest version of PwnageTool Bundle from msft.guy here</

HDR craze is in the air. After having iPhone 4 updated to have HDR photography, and even Android getting HDR Photos, its now available for HDR on iPhone 3GS and 3G, as long as you are jailbroken.

A brief about HDR:

High dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminances between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wider dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight.

Simply stated, HDR Imaging automatically combines multiple exposures into a single image to improve shadows in images.

Enable HDR photos on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G :

SSH into your iPhone using your favourite tool (Filezilla on windows, CyberDuck on Mac)

For iPhone 3G, navigate to

/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N82AP.plist

For iPhone 3GS, navigate to

/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N88AP.plist

Using textEditor, create a New key named “hdr-image-capture” with a boolean value of “true” to the “capabilities” section of this property list, like below

<key>hdr-image-capture</key><true/>

Save the plist and upload it back into the iPhone in the original folder.

Reboot your iPhone and you would start seeing HDR settings in the Camera app next time you run it.

Warning :

The bundles included in this release are not official because they were not issued by the DevTeam.

You must be on already pwned 4.0 Beta / 3.1.3 / lower.

Use this guide on your own risk, i am not responsible for any damage (if any). The procedure mentioned below is tested by me and it works.

iPhone 2G, 3G, iPod Touch 1g possess a decent ARM Cortex processor which has been underclocked to give you more battery life.

So the processors on the devices are not fully exploited, but with overclocking it is very much possible, but only on jailbroken iPhone/ iPod touch. The processor of the iPhone 2G, 3G is indeed 600MHz, but Apple has underclocked it to 412 MHz only, iPhone 3GS instead of 833 MHz it is operated at 600Mhz. But its easy to run them at their factory clocks.

How to Overclock CPU on iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch

Step 1. Make sure you have a Jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch. (Jailbreaking guides)

Step 2. Using a SSH tool like Filezilla, Navigate to System/Library/System/System Configuration/PowerManagement.bundle/

Step 3. Rename file “com.apple.SystemPowerProfileDefault.plist” to “SystemPowerProfileDefaultbak.plist” or something that device doesn’t recognize.

Step 4. Reboot, and your iPhone/iPod Touch would Run on native Processor clocks.

Important: Increasing the clock speed would degrade the CPU’s lifespan by several minutes. However, since the device is not designed to handle the heat generated at higher clocks, we recommend you to terminate apps if device appears to overheat.

Thanks to the small jailbroken hack, now its possible to connect an iPhone or iPod touch to a Bluetooth keyboard for some serious typing.

The app that enables it is only available for jailbroken devices in the Cydia store for $5. The app is called BTstack Keyboard and is supported on iPhone 3GS

Engadget had a quick hands-on the application. Pairing your iPhone and keyboard was as easy as it could be. Works well over all the applications, though, cut, copy, paste is yet to get shortcuts. We can hope for more in future app updates, for the meantime it serves the purpose well.

Gaming on iPhone is snap. We’ve seen so many beautiful 3d Games on the platform that run so flawlessly. Porting games to iPhone is in-vogue, the best example is Driver that made its way from PSX to iPhone.

In the past Quake 3, Doom and other gaming engines had been ported well to the iPhone. Unreal 3 engine powers modern DirectX 10 games like Gears of War 2, Unreal Tournament 3, now runs on an iPod Touch, iPhone 3GS.

The game is fully playable using a modified Unreal Tournament level. Mark, the developer behind porting, has created a virtual thumbstick on the for providing screen controls and other controls like tap the screen to shoot. In practice, the controls work well.

Check it out running:

Surprisingly, the frame rate was great, a smooth gameplay. The game uses OpenGL ES 2.0, the horsepower behind iPhone 3GS.

Epic games have no plans for porting this game officially, so expect this to be only a jailbroken app.

And it’s not just about iPhone support. Mark told anandtech that in CES we’ll see Unreal Engine 3 on another mobile platform, hopefully. Did he mean Nexus one? Running Unreal 3 Engine isn’t a platform specific thing, it’s about bringing Unreal Engine 3 to the entire portable market. For now, Mark is planning to license this gaming engine to general public based on the open SDK available. What we are not sure of is when and how Epic will expanding it’s UE3′s horizon to mobile market.

iPhone 3GS is the first step in mobile gaming with 65nm technology, Intel is coming up with its 32nm chips and Nvidia is pushing mobile graphics too, both targeting to squeeze size and hence increase capabilities. With UE3 on the iPhone, we will eventually see better games on almost every platform, expect the unexpected.

Google has released it’s own Native devil powered by Android, better known as Nexus One. Initially, it was given out to Google employees to play around and spread the word. The hype was well built, brought few promising features.
As one would expect from Google, the Phone is pretty good on specs. But how does it compare with the Best Phone we know of?
Here is a heads-on comparison with iPhone 3GS drilling down Feature-by-feature:
UPDATE: Let’s have a look at the them in the latest Leaked Video:

Update 3: Gaming and 3D Performance (iPhone 3GS beats Nexus One)

Now, Do you doubt on Nexus one’s Speed? Clearly beats iPhone (except for the browsing experience, iPhone 3GS beats Nexus one badly at browsing and Gaming). The User experience is still immature as compared to iPhone, but hardware has its edge over Apple. Ofcourse, Android needs some work before the graphics and 3D rendering comes upto the level of iPhone.

What is the feature most missed on the iPhone? Of course it is the MultiTasking.

Apple never emphasized on multitasking (running several apps simultaneously) just because iPhone 2G & 3G have limited amount of RAM. Thanks to Jailbreaking, there is a solution round the corner for more than year: its called Backgrounder. Backgrounder let’s you run multiple apps in the background. This app is bit unreliable coz as soon as iPhone runs out of RAM, it will close the application in background abruptly.

This is more successful on iPhone 3GS since it has more RAM.

The Latest offering for Multitasking is called Multifl0w. This is an addon app to backgrounder, which actually lets you swipe across the running apps like one can do in Palm Pre.

Checkout the Video below for a Demo:

The app is designed for iPhone 3GS for a true streamline experience, will be launched soon in Cydia. Subscribe to us below, and we will alert you as soon as it becomes available.

The war is more complex than it looked initially. At this point of Time iPhone 3GS still looks like a better option for the people who love Apple, but Time will tell whether usability of Droid proves better competition.

Motorola has declared battery life as 8 hours, which is very vague. Normally, 3G talk time is much less than 2G, Motorola doesn`t specify either. Looks like an averaged value.

If you love playing games on your Mobile, love trying a lot of different Apps, need Full Multitouch Gestures, iPhone is or you. If you are into heavy Tweeting, Texting, and care for camera, expandable memory, better GPD, Droid is for you.
And if you care for a Good network, Verizon is for you.

What do you think?

Is iPhone 3GS is already a winner? Or Droid is better since it has attractive stuff like better camera, removable battery, Memory? Let us know.
