I’ve spent hours finding the best app that could mimic MS Office’s Word, Excel and PowerPoint on iPad, but sadly there didn’t exist any. I’ve been playing in dust with apps like DocumentsToGo, Apple’s Office apps. None of them bring the native feel to them.

CloudOn is the first app on iPad (and in fact Tablets) that brings the Desktop feel to the MS Word and other MSOffice suite apps. CloudOn’s interface is very similar to that of MS Office, and it’s hard to stay away from it.

The app relies heavily on the cloud storage service, Dropbox. There are 2 steps to creating an account. 1. CloudOn Account 2. Dropbox account ( which you can also signup during the initial wizard).

The most useful aspect of CloudOn is its ability to let users create new documents: a Word doc, PowerPoint presentation, or a new Excel sheet. Luckily, the Word section is amazingly laid out almost in exact manner, order. You’ve function keys on top of the keyboard, like in android apps, which make experience even more seamless. The tool is indeed very rich and powerful.

Not to mention, all your documents are saved automatically to Dropbox, so chances of losing one are naive. This amazing app is free, so go ahead and try it on your iOS device.

It might only take few seconds to unlock your iPhone and find, launch the app you were looking for but why take the hastle when you can launch the app right from your Lock screen.

With SuperSlider, you can add icon to sliders of your Lock Screen that works when you tap the button next to “slide to unlock”, clicking it would unlock and automatically launch the app.

You get to choose the app that should be launched when you click the button next to slide across . From settings.app, you would be able to choose the application from a list of installed apps.

SuperSlider leaves some glitches to be fixed, but they may be just for a while. Right now, slider gets stuck half way when you move your finger away. Other than that, all seem to work well for a tweak that’s free on Cydia store from Bigboss repo.

Search for “superSlider” on Cydia, on your jailbroken phone.

Your iPhone secretively tracks your location, all the way without permission. This may freak out almost every user, its creepy and its true.

Apple has integrated this malicious behavior into iOS 4 and its so dirty that it takes automatic backups every time it’s connected to iTunes, then pulls out a lifelong list of your locations, timestamps included. This data can be visualized using iPhoneTracker, showing you complete location history.

Apple uses Cellular tower triangulation and that’s why it always works no matter your GPS is off or out of range. This location data is available to any person (or app) that knows where to look.

How to Disable iPhone location Tracking

Thanks to the Jailbroken app in Cydia, its now possible to escape this apple’s blunder. The app is called “Untrackerd” and it continuously watches and deletes the database that is used by apple to store location data. The app is available for free on Cydia under BigBoss repository, simply search for Untrackerd on Cydia and install it to prevent your iPhone from tracking your location.

The package [will install a] daemon (process that can run in the background) to clean consolidated.db file. No new icons are added to your homescreen. There are no options to configure.

Health conscious or just curious, you can now shoot photo of your meal to get instant calories figures for the food you are just about to have.

Meal Snap brings calorie counter to the iPhone in a intuitive way. Its as easy as it can get, just shoot a photo of your food and Meal Snap goes to the servers and returns back with the number of calories you’re about to consume.

As far as I played with the app, Meal Snap appears seems promising but with one exception. It appears the app is being a little general in its calorific assessments with no consideration for portion size or slight variations (such as a sandwich with a topping for example). But on a closer look, this is no less accurate than a handbook though, so we won’t take this as a show stopper, the app still rocks.

You can always share the meals to Facebook, twitter, etc that you’ve been upto, and side-by-side you can also get reviews for the meals.

Meal Snap costs $2.99, its worth every calorie.

It was not too long after it was released that a developer figured out how to do it.

How to Install iMovie on iPad 1

1: Download and install iPhone Configuration Utility (Windows /Mac)

2: Run iPhone Configuration Utility, click on “Applications” and then open iMovie (found under iTunes / Mobile Applications)

3. Connect first-gen iPad via USB cable and select your iPad listed under “Devices”.

4. Now select the “Applications” tab and hit the “Install” button and iMovie 1.2 would be installed on to your iPad.

Gaming on mobile devices is picking up, and we’re about to see notebook level games on mobile devices thanks to dual core processors. But Gaming console level game is still a far dream. But the latest trick lets you play Playstation 3 (PS3) Games on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, easily.

Most VNC clients just let you access your PC, Mac remotely. They work fine for most of your applications but Gaming is out of the scope due to limited frame-rate over limited bandwidths and almost no support for controls/gestures. The new app called EveryAir beats these drawbacks by letting you control Games via on-screen gestures, as a result, your Gaming controls work flawlessly. In addition, the video works without a jerk bringing almost Native feel to the games right on your iOS device.

The app is very identical to OnLive, the cloud computing platform. The game processign happens on the real high-end hardware and is then streamed to iPhone, iPad, other iOS devices. The ability to play your own PS3 (and soon, Xbox 360) games from just about anywhere would also be seen on PC, Mac soon.

Preliminary App is available in App Store for $4.99

Sadly enough, its not default in any of the mobile OSes. Android users have universal solutions using open technologies like DLNA that lets them connect to any other multimedia device, wirelessly with zero config.

AirMusic does exactly that for iOS devices. AirMusic lets you stream Music to PS3, Xbox 360, Windows from iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, painlessly.

AirMusic costs $0.99 and is worth the price since it works with all DLNA enabled hardware. (Mostly all HD TVs, all gaming consoles support DLNA).

To use the app, switch on the receiving device.

Xbox users will need to select the Music Library and then the device you’re streaming from.

PS3 owners will choose the music icon on the cross media bar and then the streaming device.

Other DLNA hardware will have its own process, but the idea behind DLNA is that it handles all the handshaking and protocols – it’s streaming made easy.

Here’s an PTT app that doesn’t suck and works on Android & iPhone.

Phone calls are not always the best thing to do since you are stuck talking to someone in real time, you’ve almost no time to engage yourself in other tasks, essentially because your Brain doesn’t multitask well. Text messages suck because you would never be able to type as fast as you wish you could on those small onscreen keys. There must be another way around all this, and its this app which makes your phone work like a Walkie- talkie that you can use anywhere, anytime and without having to get stuck.

HeyTell is a free app for iPhone, Android that lets you send instant bried voice messages to other HeyTell app users with a touch of a button.

Who should use it

Perhaps, people who miss the golden days of walkie talkies;

people who despise both calling and texting; people looking for an easy way to communicate cross-platform.

Its better than its alternatives coz it’s free, it’s simple, and it works. The ability to go back and review messages will undoubtedly be fun.

There are some in-app purchases available that let you modify your voice to sound like a Robot, etc.

You don’t really need a high-end camera to shoot 3d photos/scans, you can now do so with your iPhone’s front camera. Trimensional lets you capture 3D scans with your iPhone, using a simple analogy.

How it Works: To get started, crank up the brightness of your iPhone 4 to max, and stand in a dark place. Hold the phone screen up to your face (around 20cm away) with theTrimensional app loaded, and tell it to starts scanning.

The result is a 3D scan of your face. The quality exclusively depends on how dark is the environment around you.

Here’s full list of features you will be amazed with:

Capture your own 3D scans

Browse your 3D scan library

Rotate and zoom your 3D models

Pick from 6 different 3D rendering modes

View a 3D slideshow

Email images directly to friends

Save images to camera roll for posting to the web

The app costs just $0.99 on the App Store. Of course the app would work with iPhone 4 or the latest generation (4th) iPod touch.

When RIAA stood against Tanenbaum, we knew how unfair and serious Music industry is while dealing with Piracy. Every year, music and movies industry lose billions due to piracy.

But on the software side, it’s a different story. Few who envy Open source believe information is free and must be redistributed at no cost. But software giants have a different approach to it.

Most iPhone users would know that the pirated market for iPhone apps is a big business, but now we’re starting to get a better understanding of the numbers associated with content piracy in the app world. Incredibly, the “business of pirated apps” is starting to compete with numbers set with piracy of films and music.

Record labels and movie studios have complained about and tried to battle content piracy. Now it’s the app developers’ turn.

Apple is aware of all these facts but they have showed zero resistance to this. They are still earning in millions without waving a hand, but what about developers?

The 24×7 Wall Street had a detailed post calculating the amount that Apple and developers of paid apps are losing when copies of their wares are downloaded to jailbroken, or unlocked, iPhones.

Their Conclusion: For every paid app downloaded in the App Store, three are distributed for free [pirated]. That’s a loss of $140 million for Apple to date, almost 1/3 to 1/4th of the revenue of the total $500 million to $700 million from App Store. For developers, the loss is even higher: $310 million. So overall $450Million ~ $0.5 Billion

These numbers are averaged. But few of the developers have reported very high losses. Here are companies that affected the most:

Neptune Interactive Inc and Smells Like Donkey Inc have reported piracy rates has high as 90% for their game $1.99 Tap-Fu and claim that it was available in a pirated version within 40 minutes of its release on the App Store. Another company, Web Scout Inc. reports a 75% piracy rate for its $0.99 iCombat game. The developer of the $4.99 art program, Layers, reports a piracy rate of 75%, and Fish Labs reports 95% for its $7 Rally Master Pro 3D. Piracy rates almost certainly increase with the cost of an application. TomTom’s US & Canada GPS product for the iPhone, which retails for $79.99, ranks second in handheld application downloads on piratebay.com, a file-sharing torrent. The top 100 downloads listed at piratebay.com is littered with expensive TomTom and Garmin GPS products. A conservative estimate of the average piracy rate is that for every paid application developed and sold at the App Store 3 more are pirated.

Why is Apple Silent over this ?

More on it coming soon, subscribe @taranfx on Twitter or below:

With over 110,000 applications available in the App Store, its still on the rise.

Nexus One may have entered the battle, android is going to take some time to catchup.

So you want to learn How to write iPhone apps ?

iPhone uses the Mac’s popular programming language: Objective C. It’s alot different from C. Objective C is more like C++ with a different syntax. Normally one would need to write Objective C code in XCode SDK on Mac OS. But there are ways to develop iPhone applications on windows pc too. XCode is an Advanced SDK with suport for all the major languages: C, C++, Fortran, Objective-C, Objective-C++, Java, AppleScript, Python and Ruby.

The Xcode suite includes a modified version of free software GNU Compiler Collection (GCC, apple-darwin9-gcc-4.2.1 as well as apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1, with the former being the default).

Stanford university developers have created a two lecture session that serves a complete Video guide [with assignments] to Help you get start writing basic iPhone applications.

Pre-requisites: Sound knowledge of Programming C / Objective C.

Fring has been out there for couple of years and they have proved to us that they know how to evolve. The started as small company and launched first VOIP service on the symbian platform. Fromt then they have captured almost every mobile vendor in the world.

The service works with a ton of different networks, including Skype, AIM, MSN Messenger and Twitter. Plus, you can make calls to landlines from your SkypeOut/SkypeIn account and place voice calls to your Skype and Fring contacts.

The current launch brings two-way Video chat over 3G and WiFi for Nokia. But it is limited to one side VIEW on iPhone and iPod touch for callers over Skype or Fring service. However, there is a limitation, you can interact via voice to the person shown on your display, but you cannot broadcast your video.

I tried the application and the video did stream pretty smooth. Though there were few jerks at moments but I guess network is to be blamed for it. Call setups create problems sometimes, but overall, its all good.

Clearly, if Apple had included a front facing camera on the iPhone, it would have made more sense. I`m not complaining at the moment coz I know a lot is coming int he iPhone 4G.

Probably, iPhone’s original Home Screen (Lock screen) is very boring and non-intuitive. There are couple of apps that make the experience much richer by giving you option to add SMS preview, Calendar events, Weather, etc, but none of them is as perfect as the one we are about to discuss now. Though IntelliScreen does a fairly good job, it’s a single screen widget. The new app is called SmartScreen, developed by one of the iPhone DevTeam members, to be released under the brand MediaPhone.

SmartScreen basically let’s you do things to home Screen that you could do with HTC Hero. Just like Dashboard on your Mac, you can have widgets like weather, stocks etc on the iPhone lockscreen! Like HTC Hero, you can reposition the widgets the same way you move the apps, just tap and hold to move – and you can have upto 8 screens of different widgets. Its quite a neat approach for having widgets on iPhone OS – which makes it Kick ass app for Lock Screen.
Of course it needs Jailbreaking like all good Cydia apps, it violates Apple’s SDK agreement and cannot be sold on the AppStore. The cool news is that developers who are willing to create various widgets will be completely able to – an SDK for SmartScreen has been scheduled for release in November of this year.

There is no word on pricing, but I believe it would be either free or dirt cheap.

Well, Android already has a Augmented Reality App [Layar] officially, and now for the first time we got to see Augmented reality on iPhone though unofficially on Jailbroken iPhones only.

The App is called SplatCam and is more about fun rather than utility at this point of time. All it does is is adds a new dimension to your Real-time video (similar to Cycorder video).

The live video Feed from the iPhone’s camera can be extended to do some fun stuff. You can shoot tomatoes, eggs or spitwadss at anything in the field of view. It is all done in real time. And yes supported for 3.x. I tried on 3GS, it works, not sure if it’s compatible with others.

Currently it’s available via Cydia app store as a paid application hosted on modmyi source. It costs $2.99.

Try it out, it’s cool.

Marco Tempest has developed a App called MultiVid that allows you to play synchronized video across multiple iPhone or iPod Touch. The Video sync happens wirelessly over WiFi (same network). Good thing is, the video can be triggered from any of the devices or from Mac OS. And if small screens is not exactly what you need, there is more. You can connect to larger monitors through a video output cable (via Mac).

Checkout the video detailing the software setup after the break below

The client software will be available at the App store soon and controller software can be downloaded from his website.

No doubt, Steve Jobs never thought that iPhone and iPod Touch would become more famous as gaming platforms. They easily kickout Sony PSP, and Nintendo DS, and now become no.1 in Mobile Gaming. Prevalently, Gameloft, the biggest game developer, is rapidly becoming synonymous with “kick-ass iPhone games.”

Recently, GameLoft added one more to it’s collection called Blades of Fury(AppStore), an arcade-style fighting game that, could best be compared to Mortal Kombat that too for iPhone.

The Game has Rich graphics and they run smooth even during extreme action. The game is well organized with 10 warriors. As one would expect each has their own moves, attacks, and even stories. There are 10 different backgrounds or scenes where the fights would happen.

The Best thing about this game is, it gives you what you dream of : Multiplayer. You can challenge nearby competitors via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. though there is No Internet play, but Gameloft has plans to support in upcoming releases. Online Multiplayer could make a Big Hit.

If you’ve ever played Mortal Kombat, Tekken, or it’s kind, you know that the fun lies in mastering various attack combos so you can dish out maximum damage. Same goes for Blades of Fury, but the onscreen buttons aren’t a match for that on the console, but still it’s fair deal.

Best iPhone 3D Games Reviewed. Top 20 Must have Action, RPG, Sports, Racing.

Though, the game gives you a choice of a joystick or d-pad for character movement and swipe or button controls for attacks and defenses, it’s not the one you could compare to consoles.

May be it’s hightime that we need some accessory that acts as Joypad for iPhone. We heard of a project working over a year, though they never finished for retail. hope goes back to Apple. And good news is, apple now confirms that they are working on accessories. Listed on apple.com:

Third-party Game Accessories
Connect fun new game accessories via the iPod touch 30-pin connector and Bluetooth.

On the other hand, control issues aside, Blades of Fury offers a ton of skull-bashing fantasy fun, and I find myself going back to it more than a lot of other action games.

It’s worth spending $6.99 , though I badly feel joystick is missing.

The Bath-o-matic iPhone app will allow you to run a bath in your house, from wherever you are, all via your iPhone. Who needs servants to pour you the perfect bath? Sounds too good to be true? Read on to find out if there’s a snag…

Bath-o-matic is the world’s first mobile controlled bath system. The hygiene loving app is available free from Apple’s App Store and uses the iPhone’s Wi-Fi skills to control Bathomatic baths. According to the company the app does everything possible to create the perfect bath-time experience.

All users have to do is zap the app to their phone and it will send instructions to your bath to create the perfect bath-time experience.

“At the touch of a button, Bath-o-matic fills the bath to perfection – even adding bubbles and perfumes,” a spokesperson said.

There is one thing though. The free app won’t work with just any old avocado bathtub. Well-heeled customers will have to fork out up to £4,000 for the pleasure of a Bath-o-matic enabled tub. Keep your eyes rinsed for a shower version of the app very soon. High price for a comfortable bath
