CrunchPad may have been declared Dead, here comes JooJoo creating life from it’s ashes. Built by Fusion Garage, this tablet is worth a look, even though Apple iPad Video Review claims iPad as the winner.

Note: This is a “early” First Look Review

What’s In: The device runs on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor with 1GB RAM. The screen is Multitouch 12-inch, 1366×768 resolution. On the graphics part, GPU + CPU combination, looks like an Nvidia Ion chipset. Since, the device is able to play 1080p YouTube videos smoothly, it’s supposed to have a good Nvidia acceleration for HD. Currently, only Nvidia Ion finds it`s place in portable FullHD video.

There’s an accelerometer that takes care of the orientations.

Other Features include 3.5mm headphone jack, a microphone jack, a built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam, a charging port and a USB slot.It will ave an option to plugin a 3G card. The built-in speakers for playing back audio are pretty average.

Overall Feel

Browsing on the Tablet is a charm. Page loads pretty fast, though not something comparable with Chrome. The Tab switching animation/transitions are handled very smoothly by the device.

It’s fast, and handles gestures (pinching to go back a level, swiping to move up and down) just fine. There are other gestures that will be included in the final build, like two finger swiping for going back and forth in history and a bookmark swipe, but we didn’t get to see that. But, you can’t zoom into text. That’s partially because the pinching is already used for going in and out of your windows into the home screen, but also partially because the screen is 12 inches. You don’t need to really zoom into text on a laptop-sized screen of 12 inches.

Your home screen is composed of icons—shortcuts—to web applications. The screen is customizable with your own applications, eventually.

As for multitasking, it’s easy to switch among tabs just like the WebOS. For example, if Twitter refreshes in another window and you’re watching a YouTube video, a popup will show and tell you you have something else going on.

On the outside, the body is solid, sturdy. The back is curved and made of a hybrid plastic good on hold, and it doesn’t feel heavy even after prolonged use.

The entire system is just like Chrome OS: Browser. The Browser is based on Webkit, the same engine that powers Safari and Google Chrome. And they also said they may make LARGER sized tablets as well, with 12 being their smallest size.

Engadget got a handson video review:

And here’s an exclusive one from back in time when JooJoo was half-baked.

Unlike what the video says, the Keyboard is something I’m worried about. The on-screen keyboard is totally crappy and makes it almost impossible to type fast or with both hands. May be future software upgrades will fix that.

The concept remains same as Chrome Netbooks launching year-end: “internet is the application”.

What seemed strange was that there is no support for PDF natively, you have to depend on the online Google Docs for reading all PDFs.

Verdict?

If you want a Chrome OS concept Tablet, JooJoo looks solid. Fusion Garage had their homework well done on the device specially on the Video/multimedia part.

A Price of $500 definitely worries me coz apple has their miracle iPad set at a similar price.

Of course no one has stress tested the device for heavy videos and webapps. So waiting a while makes sense. Stay tuned for more on the device.

We write about apple, iPhone, iPad, Open Source and latest in Tech @taranfx (Twitter) or subscribe below:

A week back we heard from the CEO Of Nvidia, Jen-Hsun Huang that he had been working closely on a tablet, and we knew it was coming.

Today surfaces the prototype Nvidia Tegra Tablet powered by Windows CE and a Resistive Touch. What comes good is the HD capability of this device. The 720p and 1080p playback on the device is smooth and power efficient. Since the device is just a prototype, its pointless to comment on the battery life.

As per Nvidia, the project is known as ICD Ultra and promises to play 10 hours of 1080p HD content, and 3 times the battery when listen to music (screen off); practically, give FullDay juice to the battery at any kind of usage. On the gaming and graphics side, you can’t expect much from Tegra based MID coz they are designed to give extended battery life. For standard games like COD MW2, it should give out 40FPS over medium-low graphics settings.

The NVIDIA Tegra processor is a heterogeneous multiprocessor architecture. Each processor unit is architected for a specific class of tasks—a CPU for running html and Java, an HD video processor that makes streaming HD video playback possible on a netbook for the first time*, and an ultra-low power NVIDIA GPU for a compelling user interface and for Flash acceleration. These processors are used together or independently to deliver a wonderful experience while utilizing minimal power. With its ultra-low-power processor design, NVIDIA Tegra processors achieve up to 5 times the power efficiency of existing products in battery-operated computer systems running compelling visual computing applications.

Apple’ Tablet may not be coming before 2010, but we have already got few cramers. Earleir we talked about tablet running mac os x called iTab Mini. and now Comes Toshiba wangling it’s tail on the Tablet PC industry.

Toshiba’s JornE is a 7-inch multimedia tablet dominated by the touchscreen display, but on the inside, there’s support for a wide range of codecs (H.264, DivX, WMV), 802.11b/g WiFi, some online multimedia services like YouTube and Flickr, and some light internet duties thanks to Internet Explorer running on Windows CE 6.0 Pro.Yeah, it’s not android or any oother linux, it’s god damn it CE, same that will be used in Nvidi’s Tegra based Netbook.

Despite the size and good battery life, it can output sub-1080p video over an HDMI plug in the dock.

The device measures a mere 14mm thick and weighs just under a pound. There’s only 1GB of built-in storage, but that can be expanded via the SD slot, and the device can access external storage over USB. Word is it’ll retail for 250 Euro in Q4 this year.

The device feels pretty nice in hand, but there’s still a bit of a prototype vibe about it — maybe because it’s still a prototype. It’s clearly a resistive screen, and the device will include a stylus for non touch-optimized apps. Toshiba seemed to be having fun with the multitude of Apple comparisons, namely since there isn’t an Apple device to compare it to yet. They also call the video output the tablet’s killer app, and promise to show more once they can track down a WiFi signal. Sure, it’s just a MID at the end of the day, but we’ll be happy to humor them — it’s a pretty hot MID.

Till date Microsoft had close partnership with Intel for their systems and the collaborations was often known as WINTEL (Windows-Intel). This trend is going to gear up to another level as a result of partnership of Intel with Google for Chrome OS.

Now, sources say that Google approached Intel a while back to work together closely, to design Chrome OS suited for Intel architecture. The reason is but obvious, nearly 80% of the PCs/Notebooks/Netbooks are equipped with Intel processors.

<ins><ins></ins></ins>

Google has plans for release of Chrome Os in later half of 2010, with the first phase targetting to capture Netbook market, and eventually they will target NoTebooks and desktop PCs. On Netbooks, Intel Atom processor is a clear majority, capturing 97% of the market. So its pretty justified why Google chose Intel. Though there is a twist over this. Intel already had been working on a Portable computer OS called the Moblinfor it’s so called MIDs. Intel had been working over this OS for the last 6 months atleast. Intel wants to target Mobile devices. They are serious on getting Atom processor to the mobile platform.

Google made no mention of Intel in a blog posting earlier this week when it named companies already working with the Chrome OS. The list includes PC vendors HP, Acer and Lenovo and mobile phone chip makers Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Freescale Semiconductor. Chrome OS is being developed as Linux-based operating system for heavy Internet users.

<ins><ins></ins></ins>

Today, most of the smartphones run on ARM architecture. ARM is good on battery power but limited in the processing side. With Intel taking Atom processors to Mobiles, they can pump the capacity of the mobile devices to run Typical “Desktop applications” on their phones.

Strategy from Intel and Google seems to be converging, and It’s quiet evident that their vision of MIDs can converge innovation that can lead to much more powerful portable devices for the future. What would we call it ChroIntel or Googintel ?

Netbook concept was started to satisy low end users whose major purpose is to surf the Net, light multimedia and business applications. As more and more people are adopting Netbooks as an alternative for MIDs, or even notebook, demands for better performance has risen.

Vendors have not ignored this, they are closely watching and now we have netbooks with better power than before. Now we see a new rising trend, its about packaging more into the Netbooks.

The ultra-thin laptops based on Intel’s ULV processors or AMD’s Athlon Neo are an obvious alternative to netbooks. Dell took a different approach with the Vostro 1220, which it announced earlier this week. The Vostro 1220 is also based on a 12.1-inch display, but it uses standard Intel mobile processors. At 0.9-1.5 inches thick, it’s not as thin as the HP Pavilion dv2, for example, but it is still highly portable weighing 3.4 pounds (with the 4-cell battery). Interestingly, Dell claims the 6-cell is good for 9 hours of battery life despite the fact that the Vostro 1220 does not use the ultra low-voltage chips.

The Vostro 1220 starts at $729 with a 2.2GHz Intel Celeron 900, 2GB of memory, Intel GMA 4500M HD integrated graphics, 160GB hard drive and Vista Home Basic. The 6-cell battery adds $60. That’s more expensive than a 12-inch netbook–the Dell Mini 12 starts at $500 with Windows XP–but you also get more, including an internal DVD drive. There aren’t many standard 12-inch business ultraportables in this price range, so Dell deserves some credit for trying this out. I haven’t seen any full reviews yet, but it will be interesting to see how the Vostro 1220 stacks up.

Meanwhile plans to boost the performance of netbooks are in full force. Lenovo had already announced plans to offer a version of its IdeaPad S12 12-inch netbook with Nvidia’s Ion chipset. Now Samsung will soon release an 11.6-inch netbook, the N510, with Ion later this year. Nvidia’s chipset promises to improve the performance of Atom-based PCs by replacing the integrated graphics with the GeForce 9400M GPU, but to date it has largely been confined to nettops such as the Acer AspireRevo, not netbooks. Samsung already sells a 12.1-inch netbook, the NC20, for $510 with a 1.3GHz VIA Nano U2250, 1GB of memory, 150GB hard drive and Windows XP Home. I’ve also seen the Samsung N10 and N20 10-inch netbooks, which have received positive reviews.

Future could be a high performance Net-Note book combination like the one we see MacBook Air today.

Laptops and handheld computers based on Nvidia’s Tegra computing platform will hit the market before the end of this year, the company said Tuesday.

Built around an Nvidia graphics processor and two Arm processor cores, Tegra packs nearly every component required for a computer on a motherboard that’s slightly bigger than a stick of chewing gum. It also encodes a hardware encoder and decoder for full high-definition video playback.

Tegra consumes less than half a watt of power, allowing devices that use it to run for many hours on a single battery charge, even while remaining constantly connected to a cellular data network, said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of Nvidia, speaking at the Computex exhibition in Taipei.

“With the proliferation of 3G mobile networks, it’s now perfectly clear that computing technology and communications will converge,” Huang said.

This is the second time that Nvidia has “launched” Tegra at Computex. Last year, the company showed a working prototype of a Tegra board. The prototype board was shown running inside an Asustek Computer Eee PC that had its original motherboard removed.

This time around, Nvidia had Tegra-based computers to show off instead of a mockup. In all there were seven prototypes on display, including models from contract hardware makers Compal Communications, Inventec and Wistron, among others.

These systems will cost around US$199 when they hit the market and could be as cheap as $99 if the price is subsidized by a mobile operator, Nvidia said. They will hit the market at roughly the same time as systems based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor, a rival chip that also uses an Arm processor core.

A handful of companies are making tiny computers, complete with USB and Ethernet jacks not much bigger than a hefty electrical plug. We’re dying to hear how you’d put such a tiny computer to use.

What are these tiny computers we speak of? The chief executive of Marvell Technology Group, one of the companies manufacturing these tiny power-plug sized computers, told the New York Times.

What’s in the plug? It’s a tiny plastic box that you plug into an electric outlet. There’s no display. But there is an Ethernet jack to connect to a home network and a USB socket for attaching a hard drive, camera or other device. Inside is a 1.2 gigahertz Marvell chip, called an application processor, running a version of the Linux operating system.

They envision a future of tiny ubiquitous computers that do everything from serve files to control home appliances. The plugs currently run $99, but they project prices will fall to $40 within the next two years. We’re dying to hear what projects you’d cook up with access to cheap $40 wall wart sized computers.

There will be enough of room to sync the mobile devices with your regular home devices with a flick of the hand. And when you are outdoors, sharing multimedia with your friends would be slick.

To be honest, I’m not really into netbooks. I’m looking for an internet device that is more than just a really tiny laptop. This MID concept seems to be a step in the right direction.

Right off the bat it is plain to see that this thing just looks good. It’s designed more like a slider phone—which opens up portable possibilities beyond that of a simple netbook. Plus, the proposed features are actually realistic: QWERTY keyboard with trackball, wide LCD touchscreen, 7 “action buttons” that can be used when the device is closed, two USB slots, microphone and audio input, SD card reader, stereo speakers and docking connector.

Again, the MID is only a concept, but I can see how people might dig it if it became a real world product.
