Galaxy Tab 7 was the first to get the Android 4.0 aka ICS and Galaxy Tab 8.9 seems to be the next, takin the lead from Galaxy tab 10.1.

The work on custom ROM has been done by one of the XDA developers.

Note: As one could expect, its buggy but works. Most of the stuff works but camera, 3G, HD & voice search does not work at the moment. But updates would be available soon.

Pre-requisite:

Your Galaxy Tab 8.9 should be rooted and have Custom recovery like ClockworkMod.

ROM Manager (Market)

Download: Android 4.0.3 ICS for Galaxy Tab 8.9 [MultiUpload]

ICS Google Apps [MultiUpload]

Copy above files to /sdcard directory, after downloading.

How To Install ICS on Galaxy Tab 8.9

Step 1: Open ROM Manager and click Reboot to Recovery.

Step 2. From Recovery, select wipe data / factory reset. Also wipe cache, Dalvik cache.

Step 3: To flash zip from sdcard, choose install zip from sdcard > icyxmas.p5wifi.cwm.alpha1.1.zip.

Once this is flashed, select flash icygappsv2.zip. and when done, reboot.

And you should have Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich on your Galaxy Tab 8.9.

Step 4: (optional) You can overclock Galaxy Tab as it runs a modified Kernel. Use SetCPU or Antutu or NoFrills app from market to overclock.

Also check out the official thread on XDA.

Apple iMac screens can pack resolutions of 2560×1440 in barely 26″.

To give you an estimate, 1080p packs 2,073,600 pixels and high resolution iMacs have 3,686,400 pixels. But Samsung’s latest 70″ prototype TV can pack much larger number of pixels in its enormous 70″ screen. Its not just about the number of pixels but the impressive part is the technology behind those large number of pixels

Samsung adjusted 8 Million pixels (8,000,000 pixels) ”Ultra Definition” 240Hz 3DTV which is several times more than any other display ever made. In order to get them all in, Samsung had to shrink each pixel even for a display of such a large size. Shrinking each pixel means shrinking the transistors that control them, and traditional silicon transistors couldn’t cut it at that lowered size. So Samsung turned to an emerging technology called metal oxide semiconductors.

8 million is enormous knowing the fact that 4K x 2K resolution display would need 8-9million pixels.

Metal oxide semiconductors are not very new, they were used along with some of the OLEDs but they demand too much current for the amorphous silicon used in TFT, so manufacturers use polysilicon instead.

Metal oxide transistors conduct electrons more quickly than amorphous silicon and as the size changes amorphous silicon is slow enough and yet costlier and less transparent.

Other companies like Sharp are following the trend and are using metal oxides for displays. Its just started get even more interesting.

The biggest attraction of Galaxy S2 is its superb display that endorses a new Super AMOLED PLUS display which makes Retina display look ugly. Samsung claims that the color Gamut. It has twice the contrast ratio of SuperAMOLED found in Galaxy S and save much more power. The display is 4.27-inch 800 x 480.

Design

Unlike the cheap plastic feel of the Galaxy S, Galaxy S2 is a gorgeous device. You totally notice how ridiculously thin the phone is as it rests in your hand, and the effect is amplified by the fact that it’s got so much surface area — the screen-to-edge ratio is off the charts.

The feel:

UI feels perfect fast and smooth, a testament of a powerful processor We were blown away by the clarity and brightness of the Super AMOLED Plus display

One of the very recent and most interesting developments in the mobile communications industry has been the release of the Samsung Galaxy S. The introduction of this mobile phone has acted as part of a successful invasion on the smartphone market, and has silenced the voices of many stubborn critics who claimed that iPhone had monopolized it.

The first and most striking characteristic of the phone is its similarity in design to the iPhone, something that could be considered as a considerable contributor to its success. The 1GHz processor runs at an impressive and convenient speed and also matches that of the iPhone4. The screen resolution is stated as being lower than the iPhone, but with Super AMOLED technology the quality is still superb and higher than many other smartphones.

Although it’s a fairly debatable and subjective area the weight of the handset can determine whether a customer will buy or not. The Galaxy is considerably lighter than the iPhone, but to some this can seem cheap and fragile.

With regards to memory the Galaxy does match the iPhone with a potential 32GB of space, but unfortunately this option only comes with the purchase of an external memory card, compared to the built in memory of the iPhone.

It is the uniqueness of the technology that separates this phone from the iPhone models and other smartphones. Samsung has taken an individual approach to their product but applied design ideas and software concepts that they know to work. The combination of these two things has led to the development of an attractive product that really offers itself up as a good quality phone.
Now, More recently, Galaxy S has brought the interest to Google to chose Samsing as their official partner for nexus Series. The popularity came as a result of brilliant Hummingbird processor and a great GPU for gaming.

Nexus S is essentially an upgraded version of Galaxy S and has reimaged Samsung’s position in the Android.

The largest obstacle for Samsung was exposure of their product and the comparison of their reputation to that of Apple and iPhone. The iPhone’s reputation seemed to many to be the most secure in the smartphone market and in many respects it is, but through matching the capabilities of the iPhone and its design structure Samsung have provided an honest alternative to the Apple technology.

The Big day for Google has already started with announcements of couple of things at Web 2.0 summit.

Google Nexus S, as rumored, is manufactured by Samsung, powered with the new Android 2.3 “Gingerbread“. The phone would bring the pure Android experience with no customizations.

The phone is not built ground up but is a hybrid of popular android Phone: Samsung Galaxy S. It is significantly faster than the Nexus One (and most current generation phones), with a superb Super AMOLED 400 x 800 resolution screen, which is evidently equivalent to that of iPhone, if not any better.

The phone also becomes the first Android smartphone capable of NFC, near field communications.

Google Experience:

Nexus S Video Intro:

Official Nexus S

The Design:

The phone is sleeker than the Nexus One, but the black plastic case doesn’t feel that good. The feel is definitely not solid. It is very thin and light – just 4.55 ounces with dimensions are 63mm x 123.9mm x 10.88mm (slightly thicker, taller and wider than the iPhone 4, and with a larger screen).

Hardware:

The Nexus S is not dual core processor, but rather uses the 1 GHz Hummingbird processor (same as Galaxy S), but Gingerbread’s hardware acceleration had brought th true potential of the hardware, as aresult, it feels much better than Froyo.

The super AMOLED 4″ display is superb, even better than Galaxy S with richer blacks than iPhone 4.

Battery life: Unlike most Android phones, the battery is good – much, much better than Nexus One. you would practically get 6+ hours of heavy voice/data usage, thanks to the powerful 1500 mAh Lithium Ion battery. Official terms claim 400 minutes of talk time on 3G, 841 minutes on 2G, and standby time of 428/714 hours on 3G/2G.

Camera: Gingerbread expands the camera support to dual camera. Rear facing is still 5 megapixel camera, with a flash, the front one is a VGA camera. Both perform well when used for any app.

Sensors: Nexus S also gets gyroscope, along with accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor, haptic feedback and a light sensor.

Memory: It comes with 16 GB of internal flash memory, but no room for expansion.

Rest is pretty much similar to Galaxy S, Nexus One.

Apart from all that, the greatness is in Gingerbread too, with a powerful new API which allows developers to do more with new GingerBread Features:

SIP-based VOIP

Near Field Communications (NFC)

Gyroscope and other sensors

Multiple cameras support

Mixable audio effects

Download manager

StrictMode -monitor performance of apps

UI Framework – Overscroll, touch filtering, activity control, text selecton, webview

Extra Large Screen support

Graphics: full OpenGL ES 2.0

Improvements in ContentProvider, Location, Dalvik VM performance (parallel GC)

Complete Gingerbread SDK features

The Availability

Google will not be selling this phone directly to consumers. Phone will be available initially at Best Buy in the U.S. (on T-Mobile) and Carphone Warehouse in the U.K. Google says the phone is currently expected to be available starting December 16, although pre-orders might be taken earlier.

Video 2: iPad vs iPhone 4 vs. Samsung Galaxy S Tab

Overall Feel

It’s good looking solidly built, lightweight , and glossy to the max Tablet that you can’t resisit. The screen is great, though Samsung has managed to make this LCD look just as oversaturated as its AMOLEDs, pixel density the screen is higher than iPad and any other Tablet of its size.

Capacitive touch is excellent, as good as the iPad’s magical touch. The best part is it’s responsiveness. The tablet is lightnign fast with apps just craving to be run in a blink. In the hand, its much better suited to supporting with a single hand than the iPad, and seems to squarely best that competitor when it comes to all things e-reading.

The Operating System

It runs on ttop of ANDROID Froyo which gives it the power to run apps lightning fast. But, Android isn’t really “ready” for tablets. It’s still a smartphone OS made suitable for bigger screens by vendors like Samsung. Samsung’s TouchWiz 3.0 does a good job at filling the gaps by introducing some great hacks to the OS and some screen adaptive apps, suited for the larger form factors.

They have done a good job with calendar app, an email app that has a dual pane view in landscape (like the iPad), a messaging app, a Media Hub music store and player, an e-reading launcher app (powered by PressDisplay for newspapers, Kobo for e-books, and Zinio for magazines), and more. A custom dialer app includes fancy contact browsing and a video call button right up front. Samsung supports the UMTS video calling standard, but since that’s not a thing in the US, we’ll have to look to third party providers such as Qik to get our video calling on.

Samsung claims that apps can be developed using the standard SDK with minor tweaks. However, will there be enough apps for the Galaxy S Tab to make it as convincing as the iPad?

With more than 30% transparency in newer models, it might become a great eye-candy on notebook computers very soon.

What would be even more interesting to see is the Windshields and shop windows running these glass displays.

So all your favorite favorite sci-fi movies, as well as HUDs for helmets and car windshields would come to reality. Imagine a HUDs (headsup display) on windshields that shows GPS Maps Navigation, it would be awesome.

First was wide range of blazing LED displays. Of course they are superior than LCD with better contrast ratios, making them richer on the display.

With the latest offering, they target the 3D entertainment space.

The TV features 55-inch 1080p panel with a true 240Hz refresh rate. 240Hz, though doubted to be any advantage over 100Hz, is the highest one can find i the market. To enjoy the 3D content, you will have to use a set of “shutter” glasses, which rapidly alternate between blocking out the left and right eye, thereby creating 3D effect.

Of course, the value or otherwise of a TV like this is going to be found only by experiencing its output in person. If you by chance put-up near Seoul this week, head on down to the IMID 2009 conference get eyes-on this product.

At the moment, there’s far more content available on good old Blu-Ray HD than there will be in either 3D format and that’s not going to change very fast. Unless you’re a really big fan of a particular title that’s available in 3D, you’re likely to sit this out for a while.

Since long, HTC had been the exclusive provider for Google Android phones, which had wide range of options to chose from. Samsung Electronics yesterday joined with network operator Taiwan Mobile to try to steal the spotlight from rival HTC – The Samsung i7500, in Taiwan.

HTC had worked with Google to develop the first smartphone based on Android, the HTC Dream which was good enough and now the latest Android handset from HTC, the HTC Hero.

HTC still holds the widest range of Android devices. Other companies joining the race include the Ultra cool Sony’s Xperia X3 Rachael, and one Motorola handset.

More Android Phones

Samsung announced the i7500, its first Android-based smartphone, in April. The device has a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera and 8GB of internal memory, among other features.

Why more and more Vendors will be adopting Android ?

The reason is obvious, it’s free, Open Source and industry standard for Mobile OS. Mobile vendors no longer have to spend money buying Symbian, windows and other Mobile OS. and most important Android is highly customizable.

Samsung has just officially announced its first phone running Google’s Android. The Samsung I7500 will be a cutting-edge device with a 3.2-inch OLED touchscreen, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, and Wi-Fi.

This model will have a tablet shape and an HVGA display. Users will need to depend on the touchscreen for text input and dialing numbers, as there is no hardware keyboard.

On its list of high-end features are a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera and 8 GB of built-in storage.

The Benefits of Android
The I7500 will run Android 1.5, an operating system developed by Google and one that’s strongly tied to this company’s services.

This includes Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, Google Calendar, and Google Talk. The integrated GPS receiver will let users take advantage of all of Google Maps’ features, such as My Location, Google Latitude, Street View, local search and detailed route description.

In addition, there is a growing collection of third-party software in the Android Market.

Other Features
This Samsung model will be a quad-band GSM phone (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) with tri-band HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA at 5.76 Mbps (90 /1700/2100 MHz).

In addition, it will have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0.

This device will include a microSD slot with support for 32 GB cards, a 3.5 mm headset jack, and a 1500 mAh battery.

Overall, it will be 115 mm x 56 mm x 11.9 mm.

Coming this Summer
Samsung says the I7500 will be available in major European countries starting in June.

There was no mention of a release in the U.S., but this phone includes support for 3G at 1700 MHz, a strong hint that T-Mobile USA may offer it at some point. This isn’t surprising, as Samsung has already announced it is developing a device for this carrier.

It is also working on one for Sprint, and a CDMA version of the I7500 could be it.
