We’ve seen augmented reality on various smartphones, and we must admit every app and game that does AR has done a decent job at augmenting the reality. Sony seems to be taking this a little more ahead in their latest Xperia line of phones.

AR-driven EyePet can make an adorable gremlin crawl around your living room floor. Sony’s new SmartAR solution loosens the limitations on augmented reality, bringing it a step closer to genuine usefulness, closer to Reality.

Watch SmartAR in action below:

SmartAR, unlike traditional Augemnted reality programs, doesn’t require visual markers, like the 3DS AR cards. Its intelligent enough that it can generate the animation on just another photo. What’s more is that with its high speed object tracking, the photo can then be rotated, moved, or even dropped to the floor without causing a hiccup in the overlay. It handles all the 3-dimensions bringing a 100% seamless 3d experience.

The Sony Ericsson Satio is a top-end smartphone announced by the manufacturer at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, on 15th February 2009.It was officially released in the UK in three colours (Black, Silver and Red), on 7th October 2009.

The developers of the mobile phone placed most emphasis on the high quality multimedia playback, such as music, and video. Central to this emphasis is the camera, which is located on the back of the phone, situated behind a slider. The camera itself features a xenon flash, for increase photo quality in darker conditions.

Even in the Era where Android and iPhones compete, Sony Satio has a unique identity of its own.

On the side of the handset, there is a shutter button, a button that allows switching between still and video modes, and a rocker switch for zooming in and out. There is a sliding lock button and a covered MicroSD card for increased memory on the opposite side. The front of the phone is dominated by a 3.5”, 16:9 ratio 360 x 640 TFT resistive touchscreen, and there’s an additional front facing camera for video calling, and video conferencing. At the bottom of the touchscreen are three small buttons, green, white, and red.

In terms of software, the Satio comes equipped with the Symbian OS 9.4 operating system, which has been designed by the Symbian Foundation. The smartphone also uses the PlayNow service, which is Sony Ericsson’s mobile content platform (part of the manufacturers new Entertainment Unlimited service). Connectivity has also been heavily developed for the Satio, which is Wi-Fi-enabled, and has a GPS chip for navigation and location-based services, there’s also full support for Flash (for video playback).

The design of the device is based upon solidity, and its build quality is reminiscent of Sony Ericsson’s metal based feature phones of the past. The camera slide is smooth, which is similar to other high-end Cybershot devices, and the Satio is not much larger than any other Sony Ericsson high-end smartphones, unlike the Xperia X10. Additional features include a Walkman, Cybershot, and Java gaming ability.

You may not have thought about it, but its Real: Sony PlayStation phone is based on new version of Android: Gingerbread.

PlayStation Phone had been rumored a number of times in the past, but no one knew how Sony is going to design the new one. Atleast now engadget confirms that this is the new PS phone.

To drive the games, Sony will ship PS Phone with 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 512mb RAM, 1GB ROM, with a screen size of 3.8″. It would run games from the android marketplace along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform.

The handset also has a long touchpad in the center which appears to do multi-touch. As far as the button schemes are concerned, everything should remain identical to original PSP. And yea, no Memory Stick slot, only microSD cards.

click for Full size image: credits engadget

The final product would definitely have better finish, look. It’s unlikely to arrive before the holidays; we’d bet on a Q1 or Q2 2011 release.

Lets hope that device actually performs better than iPhone 4 gen devices, after all its a dedicated Gaming phone.

Sony`s Xperia range of products are coming to rock the Mobile market with couple of Android phones. We’ve seen Sony XPERIA X3 with Android. Today, arrives the news of Xperia X10.
With a 1GHz Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm, 4-inch capacitive touch display, an 8.1 megapixel camera, and the lovely Rachael Android UI, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will be a great 2010 product for Sony Ericsson.

On the downside, Snapdragon sucks battery juice, but this can change over time as software gets more mature.

As far as the unpolished UI goes, Sony Ericsson has already put some personal touches on there with Timescape and Mediascape, which aggregate all communication and media, respectively. While those features seem fantastic in theory, the early software build left questions as to just how seamless and smooth they truly are.

There’s barely any internal memory, though an 8GB MicroSD card is included to remedy that. Right now the device has no Accelerometer and Multitouch support, which sucks. May be we would have them soon in the final release.

Meanwhile, Watch the Official Video:

Microsoft announced that “Windows Phones” would be coming on October 6th, it didn’t name specific phone models, but instead listed manufacturers and the mobile network operators that would be carrying them. Today however, joint venture Sony Ericsson announced the sequel to its powerful and pricey Xperia X1 handset will be a “Windows Phone,” the Windows Mobile 6.5-powered Xperia X2.

We know another XPERIA phone is coming, called X3 which will be running Custom UI Android.

This shouldn’t be much of a surprise for X2, as the upgrade is as predictable as the name would imply. The Xperia X1 ran Windows Mobile 6.1 and was actually the company’s first Windows Mobile device. It featured a unique “panel-based” touch interface, a QWERTY keyboard, a 3″ VGA touchscreen with handwriting recognition, and a 3.2 megapixel camera, 30 fps VGA video recording, and Memory Stick Micro (M2) storage up to 8GB.

The X2 has kept the Touchscreen/QWERTY slider design, bumped up to the newest Windows Mobile, kept the panel interface (though it now comes with 13 pre-loaded panels,) upgraded the camera to 8.1 megapixels, and ditched M2 in favor of MicroSD up to 16GB. It will come in two versions: both will support GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS, but one model with support HSPA 850, and the other will support HSPA 900.

Later today, Sony Ericsson will publish the full specs in the Xperiances blog where we will get to find out (hopefully) what is powering this device and how much it will cost. The Xperia X1 is equipped with a respectable 528 MHz ARM 11/QDSP-5 and had a frightening Price of $799.

Will you buy it ?

There are some people that believe that the constant pursuit of more and more megapixels in mobile phones isn’t a good thing; that more attention should be paid to improving other features first.

However, sometimes it’s possible to do both, and a look at the recent Sony Ericsson concept / prototype Idou shows that the Swedish-Japanese alliance has had a pretty good go.

Although we weren’t able to see the camera in action, which was pretty disappointing given the promises made on leveraging the Cybershot brand ‘to new levels’, it’s understandable given the phone is barely off the design table and the camera software required for a 12MP sensor isn’t ready yet.

Up UI

However, the new interface will be enough to get some people excited, given it’s the first time in a while Sony Ericsson has departed from its original, and some might say dated, UI (with the exception of the Windows Mobile-powered Xperia X1).

The first thing that caught the eye was the slickness of the touch interface on the 640×360 3.5-inch screen, with the ability to move between applications registering almost no lag at all.

Given that this phone is still in prototype phase as mentioned above, it’s all the more impressive. Users can set different panels at the top of the home screen, and swiping left and right takes you to pictures and contacts.

A Sony Ericsson spokesperson told TechRadar that while these are unlikely to be customisable, there will be more available in the final version of the handset, due out later this year.

The contacts can be customised to allow you to quickly view your favourites, which is quickly becoming a common feature in high-end handsets as most people only regularly call and text four or five people.

The home screen will also always keep a part of the media player open as well, so you’ll always be able to listen to music or open some video when picking up the phone.

Room for expansion

The phone will use an M2 Memory card to offer expansion, although the amount to be bundled hasn’t been decided yet, according to the spokesperson.

The Idou will also make use of the recent additions to the Sony Ericsson feature set, namely the PlayNow Arena and the MediaGo software which will allow users to easily sync between devices on a home server… Sony Ericsson is extolling the virtues of the system with the likes of Bravia TVs and PS3s, but it should also work on any DLNA-enabled server.

Given the phone is only a prototype we didn’t get a chance to really play with it, which was a shame as it looks like a real contender for ‘Phone of the Show’. However, when it gets another ‘debut’ later in the spring, we’ll be first there to see whether the handset can actually live up to all the promise.
