Nvidia GeForce Now iOS Review – PC based Gaming On Your iPhone or iPad

We have seen that Apple might have disliked the mainstream gamers and has never been keen about stepping into the gaming world. But to our surprise, on November 19, 2020, Ge-force finally landed on iOS and iPad OS. As soon as it was announced, the developers were eager to test the all-time favorite cloud gaming services on the most capable devices in terms of processing power and bleeding-edge technology. So, gamers and developers worldwide took it for a vigorous spin and tested out various cool features offered by Ge-Force. The Ge-force experience has existed for quite a long time now.

The PC gamers have been using this cloud experience for a while now. It has some awesome features and offers a lot to its users. It has been a very important platform alongside steam. It made its way from PC to personal gaming devices as Nintendo and Nintendo switch. Since these devices were custom-built to the game, they had raw power at their disposal and performed as expected. In between, few android tablets tried to make their way in this domain. Still, all were diminished as the expressive power required by the Ge-Force experience was not available.

Since the technological advancements improved, we were presented with thin and light devices that had enough energy to rival any recent generation personal computers. Observing this Ge-Force, decided to make it available on the power full and performing tablets available.

The device of Choice

The recent series of iPad is no doubt mighty full machines. With benchmark scores, those even rival its own MacBook series is quite a remarkable feat. With so much power in such a slim and sleek form factor, it was an ideal gaming device. But sadly, as mentioned earlier, Apple had its door closed for gamers and cloud gaming platforms, until now. Since the NVIDIA shield’s launch back in 2015, no tablet has ever surfaced to house such incredible power. The iPad line up by Apple truly is up power with that of the Nvidia Shields’. Preferably it outperforms it by a considerable margin. Since the Ge-Force experience is fully live on the iOS store, it seems an excellent service. Any iPad from 2020, would be a great platform to test the potentials of Ge-force Cloud gaming service.

Ge-Force Experience

We would like to put it as a cloud gaming host for our consumers who are completely unaware of what this is. Nvidia Ge-Force gaming experience works slightly differently from some other streaming services such as Google Stadia, Microsoft X-could. The beauty of Ge-Force is that the consumers get to stream the games that they own. So, if a user buys a game from Steam, they can easily sync their steam library to Ge-force Experience and enjoy the game. The entire steam library is synced effortlessly, and the user interface is very involving and fluent. Though we would like to mention here that this service is reasonably new, some developers have pulled out. Their content won’t be available other than their parent library, such as Steam content. So, in a nutshell, if you have games on your Steam library, you don’t have to repurchase the entire content just to make it available on the Ge-force. The next best thing is that it comes with a free version as well. Although that free version has slightly lower graphics, limited gameplay time, and standard access, it’s still a very encouraging add-on.

Moreover, on the free variant, there is a bit of a queuing process going on. We can consider that as the influx of people trying to access, it is enormous. It also overstates the wait time. On ana average, we had to wait for far less than what was quoted to us. Which again is a positive aspect considering that this is the free variant. Keeping the limited gameplay time, consumers have to plan in advance. For example, in a multi-player title, you don’t want yourself to be kicked out while at a crucial phase of gaming or losing a lifeline instead. Whereas, on the other hand, if you opt for the founder’s edition package, you don’t get to wait in a queue, get better response time, faster loading time, and on the top, you get RTX support along with slightly better graphics. In the end, we have the founder’s edition with an added value package. It includes unlimited gameplay time, highest quality graphics, faster loading time, and almost no latency.

Cross-Platform Integration

So, in terms of gaming perks, the most significant advantage is the cross-platform syncing of games. Whether the titles are purchased or free, once added to your steam library, they have automatically linked to your Ge-Force Now dashboard. It is worth mentioning here that the Ge-Force experience is not available on iOS and iPad OS as an application. Instead, a web-based application is developed as the native application violated some of the Apple standards regarding Wi-Fi and security terms. Apple didn’t think that these games would be “safe” for their customers, so they abandoned the idea of a native application. However, the dashboard-based interface is quite impressive and delivers a lot of information.

Compatibility and I/O interface

The great thing about the Ge-Force experience is that it works perfectly with the Bluetooth controllers. So, the consumers are free to choose an XBOX one controller or any other controller of their choice. It also works perfectly with the iPhone as well. Almost no latency is felt, and the controller response is very accurate. The setup process is dead easy. For the first time, you need to log into your Ge-Force account using your credentials via the safari web browser on your iOS or iPad OS device. Then it prompts you to share the application icon to your home screen. This makes a shortcut available at your home screen for ease of access. A bit of a bummer is that despite keyboard and mouse support in iOS 14, the Ge-Force Experience does not allow users to connect and use a keyboard or a mouse to the interface. We know that it won’t be a perfect experience. It cannot match the performance of running a game natively from your device but considering mobile gaming, it’s leaps and bounds ahead of what we had a few years ago. The overall performance is adequate. The streaming via Wi-Fi was good. However, a slight lag was noticed when streaming through a Steam library or in multi-player intense titles. The latency and dropped frames were also observed when playing demanding titles. The distance from the parent router does not even matter. It’s basically the processing delay that triggers this lag. Using a tiny Ethernet adapter for the iPad and plugging it via a wired connection, the entire demographics switch drastically. The experience was next level. Excellent graphics, outclass response time, buttery smooth frame rates, and almost zero latency. By no means can one distinguish that the title was being run off a cloud gaming platform.

Final Verdict

For someone who is a hard-core cloud gaming user and wishes to experience it on a compelling mobile device while on the go, we would highly recommend the NVIDIA Ge-Force Cloud gaming experience for him. At $25, for the highest-end package, you get cross syncing of the entire steam library, smooth graphics, high-quality frame rates, almost zero latency, excellent response time, and faster loading and executing times.
