Xbox One vs. PS4: GPU Performance Comparison

The two gaming console Giants Microsft and Sony had lined up their Xbox One and PS4 for the year end release. Both of these gaming consoles have been closely speced, and very near-identical features.

Ultimately, these are gaming consoles. Bigger, better titles along with better Graphics hardware will make the platform lose or win over the other. Even though both of the gaming consoles use AMD Jaguar 8-core processor, they use a very different GPU.

Xbox One vs. PS4 GPU

Xbox One uses AMD Radeon HD 7790 GPU clocked at 800Mhz. PS4 uses AMD Radeon HD 7870.

In raw benchmarks on a PC, HD 7870 beats HD 7790 with 40-50% better benchmark scores.

Microsoft has realized the mistake they made with inferior GPU and recently announced up-lift of HD7790 GPU from 800Mhz to 853Mhz, giving it performance boost of 5-10%. This isn’t a significant jump but it was needed.

The Xbox One GPU uses eSRAM vs. GDDR5 on PS4. Microsoft claims there RAM is faster and would compensate for where GPU cores are lacking. eSRAM is high-speed low-latency eSRAM that act as a buffer for the lower-speed RAM. It’s a common tactic, but it’s also more difficult for developers to make use of.

Truth be told, PS4 would still be 40% more powerful in pushing raw graphic pixels. It would be interesting to see how game developers would leverage more Graphics power of PS4 and make games shine on one platform, and optimize on the other.

Doom developer John Carmack says the two consoles are “very close,” and that Sony has made “large strides” to improve its developer tools. Sony still has a slight upper hand with greater memory bandwidth, and a faster type of system memory, but given the similarities in architecture this leaves the PlayStation 4 with additional resources that game developers might not utilize initially.

Microsoft says it has also developed a “mono driver” internally that it describes as a 100 percent optimized graphics driver for the Xbox One, to help eliminate any performance issues, but it’ll be up to developers to truly show what the system is capable of.

So clearly, GPU hardware wise, Sony PS4 has the lead. But will Microsoft be able to catchup with other RAM and Software optimizations? We hardly think so, but we will have to see.
