Verizon claims Whatever Droid Does, iDon’t. But is the hype created by Motorola Droid all Worth it ?
Let’s take the competition Head-to-Head Feature and Specs comparison:
Feature/ Spec | Motorola Droid | iPhone 3GS | Comments | Winner |

GPS | Assisted and Standalone GPS, Digital compass | AGPS only, Digital Compass | True Turn-by-turn are possible on Both devices, but Droid leads with dedicated GPS and Google Maps Navigation. | Droid |
Keyboard | External QWERTY+ Virtual | Virtual | There’s no match for external keyboards | Droid |
The war is more complex than it looked initially. At this point of Time iPhone 3GS still looks like a better option for the people who love Apple, but Time will tell whether usability of Droid proves better competition.
Motorola has declared battery life as 8 hours, which is very vague. Normally, 3G talk time is much less than 2G, Motorola doesn`t specify either. Looks like an averaged value.
If you love playing games on your Mobile, love trying a lot of different Apps, need Full Multitouch Gestures, iPhone is or you. If you are into heavy Tweeting, Texting, and care for camera, expandable memory, better GPD, Droid is for you.
And if you care for a Good network, Verizon is for you. 😉
What do you think?
Is iPhone 3GS is already a winner? Or Droid is better since it has attractive stuff like better camera, removable battery, Memory? Let us know.

So, although droid beats iphone on most points, iphone is still the better choice? btw, the TI OMAP3430 also contains a Cortex A8 and PowerVR (supporting OpenGL ES)
loading...

To my information the Droid is also clocked at 600Mhz, so no difference with the 3GS

No I already did my homework and DROID don't reach to a 600Mhz.

“don't reach to …” , some people need to go back to school and learn proper grammar instead of playing on their “smart” phones

iphone is way better than droid. i would say use it and then have a conclusion. then u will know y iphone is the best!!!!!!!!!

The iPhone is great if you ignore the fact that the phone is locked down, and that Apple is actively trying (and failing) to subvert jailbreaking attempts. It's only a matter of time before Apple gets it right and jailbreaks don't exist for upcoming models of phones. My company also does iPhone development, so i have a lot of experience playing around.
Apple is the new Microsoft. Closed-everything. With a “milk your cash” mentality. The fact that you are ONLY allowed to install apps from the AppStore on a vanilla iPhone, and the AppStore itself has a totalitarian policy on approving apps (see uTorrent and GoogleVoice apps) makes the winner clear.
There may be 100,000 apps on the AppStore, but 95% of them have a rating of -1 on a scale of 10. 4% are okay. and the rest are worth installing. The AppStore is just saturated with junk apps.
In the end, you can do more, with more variety, on an Android Phone than you can on the iPhone. The iPhone is not a productive phone.
– If you don't have your mail application running in the foreground, you won't get your mail
– If you don't have your MSN or GoogleTalk clients running in the foreground, you don't get to talk to your friends (you are offline). You also have to pick which one you want to be on. You could be online on 4 chat clients and have a game open on Blackberries 3 years ago.
– If you switch to another app while the browser is loading you have to start over again
– If you are in the middle of something on one app, you can't switch to anything else.
Unless you jailbreak it, of course. Even then, the UI isn't designed with multitasking in mind.

About jail-breaking: If the iPhone provided what people want would there really be a need to jailbreak it??? Yes not having to pay for stuff is nice but there is other things that are included on jail-breaking that you cant do. Personally i would agree with what your saying.
loading...

Apple is not the new Microsoft. Microsoft tries to destroy markets by controlling them and removing all competition. You have choice. If you do not want an iPhone then you get a Droid or some other phone. If you want a different OS installed on your Dell PC then you are out of luck! Even if you get linux you end up paying for a Windows License.
At any rate, yes Apple is controlling the experience on the iPhone. A phone is a lot different than a computer. Much more sensitive privacy and safety concerns (like the need to be able to dial 911 without your phone crapping on you because of some rogue application or multiple applications running killing your phone's performance). Apple wants to ensure that all software sold on the phone has been through some sort of filter. Google just wants to be able to collect information about what you use your phone for. That is why you see so many types of Android phones with so many different versions of Android loaded on them. Who the heck wants to develop for that fragmentation? Different different sizes, hardware configurations, and support. That is why you are not seeing the quality of applications that exist on the iPhone. Not to mention the “memory barriers” with these phone manufacturers obsessed with not installing larger capacity flash on the phones. Cheap!!!
And yes you can multi-task on the iPhone without jail-breaking. You just can not run multiple 3rd party applications. That will likely be resolved when the hardware (mult- core processors) reaches a level where consumers will be satisfied with the experience.
I've owned phones that let you multi – task freely and they can slow down to a crawl.
And don't tell me that your Droid doesn't slow down when you have multiple apps open. The number 1 android app is Task Killer. Wow. Apple will come up with something much more elegant, just wait.

just because you've never tasted a real fast & smart phone yet. Sorry, friend. Apple blinds you.
loading...

I am am an iPhone lover but an At&T hater. Love the droid, the navigation is nice. I think Tom Tom should head for the hills!
loading...
loading...
Um, you may want to refine your chart.
The OMAP3430 is an ARM Cortex A8 + DSP (video decode acceleration) + PowerVR (OpenGL hardware accelerator). So how does iPhone get the advantage on your list?
loading...
loading...
Graphics on iPhone 3GS clocks in at 200 MHz, renders 7 million triangles per second, and 250 million pixels per second. This means that the processor provides 7x the geometry throughput of the iPhone 3G and 2.5x the fill rate.
Droid: There is not much info on Droid, but as far as we got to know, it's bit lower than this to save on battery. Second point is Android platform doesn't have a good implementation for OpenGL 2 like iPhone has.
third: Not many good Gaming titles on android, though this might change soon with android 2.x
loading...
loading...
Don't hold your breath while you wait for those quality gaming titles, because they won't come. Hard to develop a good game when so many of the phones are different. Not to mention, the fact that the Android phones that are coming out do not have onboard memory in any large capacity. Lastly, there are no guarantees that motorola will keep updating the Droid instead of switching to some other type of phone. With the iPhone you get hardware consistency, easy upgrade path for consumers through iTunes, guaranteed payment through the app store, and plenty of onboard memory for those big games!
loading...
loading...
Actually on the storage card, you're misinformed. On Android, you can not load apps on an SD card. It's part of Google's antipiracy “solution”. That only leaves about 256mb of the onboard memory to house and run apps. The rest of the onboard ROM is allocated to running the OS itself. So bottom line…you get about 256mb to store and run apps. Compare that now to 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB on iPhone.
loading...
loading...
That's just silly of you to say that. Most apps are small enough that you could download hundreds of them. And for anything that's big- the program can load a small file (<1 mb) onto the ROM and put the rest on the SD card. So technically between the built in memory and the SD card the Droid actually has MORE storage space for apps (albiet miniscule) than the iPhone. I'll admit downloading a ton of apps that don't take advantage of this could eventually be a problem, I think this will probably end up being standard programing practice in the future for any app >10mb. So this is a non issue.
loading...
loading...
How is this a non – issue? The great thing about the iPhone is it can play 3D graphic intense games. Most of the really good ones are well over 50 Megs. Heck I own over 10 games that are over 50 megs. Who wants to develop games that are restricted to such a small window of memory? Removal SD cards are over rated. And what about a good navigation system that DOESN'T require the internet to route you? Out here in West Texas we do not always have a cell phone connection (no matter what provider you have) so google's navigation system is not feasible.
loading...
loading...
Motonav, Copilot 8, iGo are three navigation solutions that does not require internet access.
All big applications on Android (for example the above navigation SW) store their data on the SD card. The biggest App I have installed that on uses phone memory on my Moto takes about 3.5 Mb (documents2go; open/edit openoffice and ms word / excel / pdf documents)
loading...

Google are working to bring Navigation to the iPhone, and saying “there's no match for external keyboards” is purely subjective. Of course Droid still comes out ahead though, it's a newer phone.
loading...
loading...
Man, Google completely copies Apple. First came Safari then came Chrome. First came the Iphone 3G S then came the Droid. Apple and Google aren't the buddies they used to be. Face it facts are facts, I can accept if you like the Droid more, but please at least don't go around saying the Droid is better. Just try to remember Iphone 3G S first then Droid, before you say the Droid is better.
loading...
loading...
I have no problem going around saying Droid is better, it simply is. Doesn't matter who made what first, what matters is who made what BETTER…
loading...
loading...
EVERYONE copies! That's how they get better. That's how life is! Just like when Dodge came out with a wagon….so did everyone everyone else.
loading...
loading...
Droid wins on OS, CPU and Graphics. Android 2.0 allows multitasking and is a more open OS compared to iPhone. Droid also has a dedicated Graphics processor which makes video and other graphics much better and faster than iPhone. iPhones clock rate does not matter as it lacks a dedicated graphics processor.
loading...
loading...
No one wants to develop those wonderful 3D games for the “open” and probably soon to be mass pirated Android application store. Plus with the fragmentation of display sizes, hardware capabilities, and OS support on phones really makes developers want to flock to Android. Oh, and you only get around 200 meg to hold your application. Yeah! HTC and the other manufacturers are too cheap to put the memory onboard so you can install applications. I've never bought so much software since I've had my iPhone. And all of it is good!
Have fun waiting for quality applications 😉

I have an iphone and would not trade it for anything in the world because I AM HAPPY. But I have to admit the Droid sounds like a very intelligent alternative to the iphone,Pre and Mytouch. This phone has potential to create it's own masses (such as we iphone loyalist).
To me that's a win win situation for everyone. This phone will force Apple to up the bar by the time my contract ends and come out with a beast. With that being said I am rooting for this phone and congradulating Verizon on one hell of a device. Come on guy and girls, stop being in denial. GPS? Turn by turn that interfaces with voice commands?? Are you seriously gonna act like that isn't huge?? That would have saved me $380 dollars (Garmin T765 Nuvi). Stop bashing other peoples choices and be at ease in the notion of more than one excellent choice for everyone depending on the individual. Verizon with its almighty network doesn't work in my basement. AT&T does, and does it well. I love what I'm hearing about this phone and hopefully it can put pressure on Apple to get in bed with Adobe so we can get flash… Now that would make the Droid a Godsend for us iphoners.

Why is CDMA better? You can't do simultaneous voice and data with CDMA but you can with GSM/iPhone. Plus GSM is faster on data.
Also, since you can not multitask on the Droid (due the Verizon/CDMA issue) but can on the iPhone, the iPhone should win or at least tie in the multi-tasking category.
Lastly, the Droid camera is slow and blurry, so again no win here.
PS: The droid mechanical keyboard is not that good.
loading...
loading...
He probably just meant that the CMDA network is superior (even though CMDA technology could be considered better in general). Saying GSM is faster on data is just plain silly. The difference between the speeds OPTIMALLY is not something most users will notice, beyond which CMDA has much higher speeds in real life (this is most likely due to network traffic and capacity, rather than actual technology, but it is what it is). Worst of all is coverage, and Verizon's 3G coverage wipes the floor with AT&T geographically. Which I guess isn't so bad since most iPhone users don't have a GPS app so they'll be stuck at home, lol.
WIN or TIE multitasking? Over this- please. First things first, I agree with you that it is an issue, but it's not that big of one. First, because the Droid can use data and voice simultaneously via Wi-fi, and because they Droid can cache content. So the biggest issue on most people's minds is probably the GPS, but I can say from just using it today that the GPS will continue to function for a while (it never stopped for me) during a call. And how often do you need to this?
loading...
loading...
The multi-tasking issue is a network issue, not a phone issue. And multi-tasking is referring to running multiple apps and seamlessly alternating between them, while keeping the running. The iPhone can't do that.
The Droid's keyboard isn't nearly as bad as people say it is. I love it.

I would love an IPhone but do not want ATT. I have Verizon for my cell phone. I am a Mac use and have a mac.com email address. Can I get my .mac email on a Verizon Droid? Has anyone tried? When I looked at the Droid today, no one at Verizon was sure how for me to get it. I do not want to purchase a Droid, if I can't get my email.

i had the iphone way before i had the droid, i got rid of the iphone due to some manufacture problems or defaults that i didnt like,, i had the blackberry storm and to be up front and honest i think the blackberry storm beats the i phone so bye a mile x10 over i think the droid is the best cell pone ever made. plus verizon has the most and best service every where and any where in the us and the droid has the most apps and the best quality in every day use its navi is so serious and on point to a t not even tom toms are all they great. so any one looking to get smart phone go with VERIZON'S DROID, i have owned all three and im with the droid at this moment they all have there down falls and stupid petty things that we all get mad at and wish they made better but hey lets face it the tech is getting so serious i cant wait till the come out with somthing that will beat the both of these two phones. so once again if your looking to get a great smart phone with great texting email internet searching gaming traveling or just plain use and want braging rights on all the cool things your phone can do well i have to say go get the droid to day and i swear to you you will not regret the fact that you bought it. 550.00$ but every dollor and dime is worth it.

The single touch thing really sucks but in my opinion the big screen and the keyboard of the Motorola Droid make up for that. Like the software too. Navigation is very fast.

The Hardware supports it, it's fairly a matter of time Android 2.x will get multitouch coz M Droid has capacitive screen.

Actually the Droid does have multi-touch. It just doesn't have pinch to zoom in the browser. The keyboard has multi-touch and apps you download can choose to include it. I have a photo editing application on my Droid that has pinch to zoom called picsay.

Droid is definitely a winner in more rural areas, where AT&T refuses to deploy, even now that they purchased Alltel from Verizon. I am a Mac user, and I have wanted an iPhone ever since they came out. AT&T simply refuses to expand their network. Bravo Verizon for finally giving us an alternative, Droid has my vote.

Comparing the number of applications available is ludicrous. The only thing that matters vis a vi apps is whether there is an app that does what you need. Remember there are a lot more apps for Windows than Mac, but the Mac has the apps needed so anything else is superfluous.
loading...
loading...
I agree that its not about the number applications but the quality. However, you make an incorrect point about the Mac. There are a lot of useful and important applications on Windows that simply aren't on the Mac. EAC, Foobar, my 3G network card program are just a few examples of what you can't get on a Mac…
loading...
loading...
I agree about the apps, and it's about if “there's an app for that” when you look for it. Apps that are built poorly or built well but don't do anything don't make a strong case for the iPhone. However, I will say that a number of reviewers have said the iPhone version of a number of apps (namely Facebook and Twitter) are much better on the iPhone, so they may have a legitimate edge on apps quality.
loading...
loading...
While they are both excellent phones I prefer the Droid over the iPhone. I don't think one is “better” than the other as we all have differend needs in our phones. It's the whole stupid Ford vs Chevy kind of debate. We can't all like the same things…

You shouldn't have to jailbreak a phone, therefore voiding your warranty (in layman's terms: drop it on the screen and you're screwed), to do basic tasks. Apple should implement these in a software update. THEN iPhone MIGHT be a winner.

I like how every1 talks about how the droid doesn't have enough memory for application and that we need to “have fun waiting for quality apps”, or “Android doesn't even have good apps”… for one an app one a phone is nothing like an app for a computer, they measure apps on a phone in the low MB range and some still measure by KB in size, so id say the memory they' dedicated to the phone just for apps is more than enough, and i've downloaded and had like 25 apps on my droid at once and didn't run out of space. i ended up taking them off because 25 apps is worthless, regardless of if its an iphone or droid, u cant keep up with 25 apps. Anyways 256 mg is more than enough for apps. And as far as the app store, why would you not expect to have to wait for good apps, android is still a fresh firmware setup and the iphone has been out roughly 3-4 years i'd hope that they would have more apps.

I keep up with 52 applications and tend to use them all sometime through the month. I can't think of any I would like to delete. They all weigh in at 1.69GB. The new EA Need for Speed Shift games weighs in at 195Mbs. The point is, developers are not going to get serious about 3D Gaming or full featured applications (that do not require data service to run) on Android until these phone manufacturers begin installing higher memory capacity in phones. The new Google Nexus is following down the same pathway. Oh, and smart phones are becoming the new hand held computer so applications will need to expand to fill the new consumer expectations.

For the losers obessed with having memory for games…. are you guys all 12 years old? Use the phone as the information/communication/music tool it's really meant to be, then put the damn thing down and go 'outside'. Remember 'outside', it's the really, really big room with the light blue ceiling, trees, and great things do, and of course no childish computer games. Seriously – get a life outside your phones. Or better yet – spend your life on your phones and stay out of the way for the humansd actually living on this planet, no iFantasy.

Droid wins hands down,. Open platform (have to root to be super user however, good for those who know what they are doing) the Motorola Droid wins as the ultimate Techie phone to date!
I do believe Motorola mentioned dual processors one for graphics one for everything else.
10,000 apps for 2.0 but many more coming since it is a free SDK and the emulators are easy to work with.
my one dislike for the phone is there seems to be no dedicated hardware key for the phone(answer or initiate calling), it seems to be all software side. still best phone I have ever used (better than iphone, which is very very fragile… montana is not easy on any phone -40 normal winters and 100-110 summers…)

I was in a Verizon store and overheard previous Apple-ATT customers who said the service and the phone weren’t all glorified as proclaimed. The Motorola Droid was hands down the better phone, and after using both, I agree. The Motorola Droid has to be the best phone I’ve ever had and for me to render any compliments for any thing is aleady the winner.

Before I say anything let be clear that I am not trying to say either phone is better then the other, but depending on what you expect you may be disopointed… I have signed a contract with Verizon for the last 7 years straight. I have a moto Droid, and LOVE Verizon, but absolutly HATE this phone. When I first got it I was thrilled. I was so excited to have this “phone”. But now after 2 months of use I'm paying $350 to cancel my contract so I can get rid of it and get a iPhone. Here are the reasons why:
*Had to completely wipe EVERYTHING on the phones memory including every app that I paid for with no refunds, just to change my primary email address. Thats the only way it will let you change it. Totaly unnessecary.
*When I'm on a phone call I constantly bump the home button by accident which wouldn't be a bid deal if it wern't for the fact that whenever that happens I cant just, hang up. No, that would be too simple. I have to find the “phone” app, click it, then click return to call, THEN I can hang up. And no, there is no app for that. I've looked…
*They physical keyboard is great, but not responsive all of the time. When using it while viewing a web page it often ignores when I click on something, forcing me to use the touch screen anyway which ussualy results in clicking the wrong thing unless I zoom in first…which I wouldn't have to if the keyboard was fully responsive.
*GPS is awful. It tells me my apartment is in the middle of a corn field, not even the right address, and when I gave it a test run to a destination I already know 15 mins away it took me on a 45 min u-turn to get there.
*Glitchy alarm clock. I found out the hard way that the alarm clock dosen't work at random, even though it says its ringing. Ended up being late for work…
*Little or no tech support. When I talked to Verizon in store about these problems they told me to call tech support. Tech support tells me its new tech and they are still getting familiar with it themselves. Fixed nothing.
As I said, I have been happy with Verizon for 7 years. But I am so unhappy with the Droid I would rather pay $350 to cancel my contract then keep using this thing. I would just get a different phone but I already used my upgrade to get this one. Congrats Android, you just cost Verizon a 7 year customer.

Having the external qwerty keyboard is great and people with the iPhone do a lot of retyping because the virtual keyboard is just difficult at times. I have seen the apps on the iPhone and there are so many that are totally useless so having 100,000+ means very little. New apps are hitting the Droid market all the time and of the hundreds I have personally downloaded and use daily they work very well with rare force closures. I looked at all the information for both phones and talked to friends before buying my Droid and I am glad I did and also glad I bought the Droid. I will stick with it!!!

I have had a Motorola Droid since Christmas time. My wife got mad at her Eris and got an Iphone. So I have gotten to use both for the last 8 months. I will never use Verizon OR the Droid again. Here is why:
Number One Reason: Conveniently outside of the 30 day return window, the slider on my Droid started to loosen up. The crazy thing is I don’t even use the keyboard, so I rarely if ever move the slider! At first it was a small bother, but over time the thing kept getting worse to the point the slider would move with simple gravity. I took the phone to two different stores and the sales reps both told me the same thing,
“Oh yeah that is just normal”.
“Really? How come the store models don’t do that?”
“Well they are new, but they are supposed to loosen up”
It may seem somewhat minute, but the thing moving all over when I am trying to type, surf, or talk, drives me nuts.
Anyway, I gave up for a while. Then the other day, I did something stupid: I dropped the phone in the toilet. Phone is fried. I have always taken good care of it and NEVER dropped it before. I called Verizon and let them know I have the insurance but have always been unhappy with the phone anyway. I looked at the new DroidX, which has no slider, and thought I could get some sort of deal on a new one. Nope. 30 minutes of polite discussion and nothing. I am stuck with a new Droid, which others on this very website have said that it will loosen up as well. I am appalled that a new version of the Droid is out only 6 months later, which by its very own existence affirms the slider had issues, and Verizon will do nothing.
Other Reasons: So I have played with my Wife’s Iphone plenty, but have been using it exclusively for the last 4 days while waiting for my replacement Droid. Over time, my Droid has slowed down, it turns on and off over and over by itself at times, and the sound quality has degraded. I have had a bunch of app conflicts, a serious issue with GPS that did not work for almost a month. The answer to the ability to use two fingers to expand, the Dolphin Browser, is still just a cheap knockoff of what Iphone did right from the beginning and is buggy at best. The Iphone is just as fast as day one, has apps I have STILL been waiting on for the Droid, takes better pictures with less Megapixels, oh and here is the big one: It costs LESS! That’s right, her service costs less than mine. Her insurance is just an $80 up front fee. No $7.99/mo and then $90 deductible for a new phone. She can go to a store and get a new one, not wait 4-5 days (no weekend delivery) for one to be shipped and then you have to figure out the setup yourself.
So Verizon, I don’t expect to bring you down, but it is going to cost a lot more than the $369 discount you could have given me. Well actually, seeing as Motorola sells the phones for $150 (hearsay), you are not really paying anything to help make it right. Instead, I will be posting messages like this on ANY forum that could possibly sway a customer from joining Verizon. And if you think my keyboard is loud, you should hear my mouth. And all you had to do was continue to profit and sell me another 2 year contract a bit early and a $200 Droid X. Nuts.

The Droid definitely wins hands down. Moreover Verizon has a great customer service reputation to live up to.
