We’ve seen 3d movies, and we know the basic principal – Stereo Picture – Capture video with two cameras few centimeters apart, and interpolate them to get 3D picture.
Ever wondered what makes IMAX convert normal 2d movies shot with a 2d camera, come alive in 3d ?
“The first step is masking out objects in the scene so that we can turn those objects 3-D,” says IMAX’s Eric Robinson as he shows off the software. “The next step is, re-create the scene in 3-D so that we can generate depth information from that. Our proprietary render system generates a new image, which is offset from the original.”
Thanks to the video at wired, it’s easy to understand.
That should clear all your doubts.

The title of this “article” is misleading. It doesn’t explain how 2d is converted to 3d. It basically just says that the conversion is made. We already know that. That’s why someone would find this with a search. But you totally left out how it’s actually done.
