It’s been a while since we wrote the popular Tutorial on installing Snow Leopard on Virtualbox. Certail users had trouble with the guide due to lack of proper hardware support — Intel VT support. So here comes a tutorial with the help of tek411 which works without much hackery
There are several reasons why not to use Snow Leopard on VMWare and go for Virtualbox.
Who doesn’t love Open Source? And when a Open source product is better than a paid application, we adore it. So is the case with Virtualbox. Virtualbox 3.1 is an amazing platform for Virtualization, It’s not only free, but also much faster than VMware in Disk I/O, Network I/O, RAM optimization, CPU Usage, Hypervisor level operations. Hats off to Sun–Oracle.
Before you begin, make sure you have enough CPU, RAM, Disk resources to share for the virtual machine.
Hardware Requirements:
- Processor: Any Intel Processor or AMD. if you still have a doubt:@geeknizer.
- RAM: Anything above 1 GB, Recommended 2GB or higher
- Disk space: 10GB (minimum)
Software Requirements:
- Virtualbox 3.2.6 (Download)
- Snow Leopard Osx86 distro
- Bit of Patience
How to Install Snow Leopard OSx86 on VirtualBox
Step 1. Create a new Virtual Machine with name “OSX”
On the next page Configure RAM you wish to allocate. We recommend anything near 1GB.
Step 2. Create Virtual harddisk
Anything near 20gb Dynamic should suffice most requirements but you are free to change it to something higher and click finish.
Step 3. Configure settings in the left pane and uncheck Enable EFI.
Next click on the Storage button on the left. From there click on Empty under the OSX.vdi, then click the folder with the green arrow on the right (next to “CD/DVD Device”).
At this window click the Add button at the top. Then find and add the OSX86 ISO you downloaded earlier. Then highlight it and click Select at the bottom. Then click OK, and hit the Start button on the left side of the main VirtualBox window.
Step 4. Starting up Mac OS firstboot
While it boots, click inside the window and hit F8. At the boot: prompt type –v.
Next, Setup should boot into installation just fine. Run the Disk Utility by going to Utilities in the menu bar.
Click the Erase tab, and click the Erase button on the bottom right of the window and then quit it.
Step 5: Proceeding with installation
Select the drive you just partitioned and continue
Step 6. Customizing the Installation
On next window, Click the Customize button and select checkboxes:
AMD Users:
Any Updates included at the top.
Drop down Kernels and choose Legacy kernel.
AMD option below System support.
Intel Users:
Any Updates included at the top.
Drop down bootloaders and check the newest Chameleon.
Drop down Kernels and choose Legacy kernel.
Then click Done and hit the Install button. You can skip Disc checking and speedup the installation. It should take anywhere between 15- 40 minutes.
Step 7. Setting the Chameleon Bootloader
When the installation completes, before restarting Click on Devices at the top of the VirtualBox window, hit CD/DVD Devices and click Unmount CD/DVD Device. Next you’ll see the Chameleon loader and then OS X will begin to boot.
After it boots you will see the setup screens for OS X! You’re good to go.
What doesn’t work:
- Audio
- Custom resolutions. You can do this via the tips mentioned in snow leopard hackintosh guide.

Hello… how exactly can I fix the resolution problem? I tried adding strings in Boot.plist, but nothing is changed. I am aware that the bootloader is already installed, and EFIStudio wouldn't have a line for the hardware of VBox.
Please advice.

This is an awesome system. Works beautifully.
However I cannot get this to fill the entire screen when I press on Enter Full screen mode
My host system video card is a nVidia GeForce 285M at 1920×1080 running on 64 bit Ubuntu.
I used the included SwitchResX application to set the resolution to 1920×1080
Both the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist and the /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist contain the string <string>1920x1080x32</string
Sure would appreciate some help enabling a true full screen view.

Hi Sankara09,
This is an awesome image. Best that I have seen.
I have one residual problem and I hope that you can help.
My host operating system is 64bit Ubuntu. My video card resolution is 1920×1080
After booting this virtual image, I notice that it fills only a portion of the screen and is 1280×1024 in size.
I used the supplied SwitchResX application and notice that both the /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist and the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist files contain the following string: <string>1920x1080x32</string>.
What do I need to do to enlarge the guest screen to 1920×1080 in size.
Thanks

I also have a full HD res on ubuntu64 but didn't work as much to get more than 1400*900. In fact i think I got more than exact full HD but it was annoying not to see everything and had to scroll the windows to see part of the screen. Don't remember which one i put to have it (it is like a game). A test will be to install the vmware driver project that you can find here : http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmsvga2/files/

Thanks. It worked for me. Can't figure how to change the system language from French to English. After googling I figured, it's only possible to do from command line. Tried “sudo languagesetup” and chose English, that helped change the language at some places (e.g. command line keyboard layout), but most of the other places are still in french. Any suggestions?

Hello Taranfx!
First of all, a big thank you for your Mac OS X virtualization tutorials!
I still have one question:
——————————————
Step 6. Customizing the Installation
On next window, Click the Customize button and select checkboxes:
AMD Users:
Any Updates included at the top. <—— THERE ARE NO UPDATES AT THE TOP, ONLY A BOX TO INSTALL SERVER, DO I HAVE TO CHECK THAT?
Drop down Kernels and choose Legacy kernel.
AMD option below System support. <—— SYSTEM SUPPORT ISN'T IN THE OPTIONS, SO I CAN'T FIND AN AMD OPTION!
—————————————————————
If you can answer those two questions stated above, then you are absolutely great 🙂

loading...
Same question here.
First I selected all of them.
What finally worked was when I read this guide http://www.hackourlives.com/install-hackintosh-mac-os-x-using-virtualbox-on-windows-or-ubuntu/
I have an AMD CPU so I only selected AMD PATCH and the Legacy kernel.
After restarting, on the chameleon screen, instead of hitting enter I hit space bar, then used -v again, after several lines of code I got into OSX!
Hope this helps some people.

loading...
I found you only need to install legacy kernel and latest chameleon bootloader (which for me was RC4 as I recall) on Intel. When I selected the thing at the top (which was probably the server line you (Thom) mentioned – it had 10.6.2 in it from memory), the install appeared to work, but then I could not select language, so I reinstalled without setting that flag, just the legacy kernel and chameleon. Then, voila, it worked for me.

Although Ubuntu (in which I am running Mac OS X through VirtualBox) reported that my processor did not have virtualisation when I did cat /proc/cpuinfo, I found I had to update my motherboard BIOS to get it to have an enable virtualisation option, which then allowed the CPU to be recognised properly.

This DOES require hardware virtualization capable chip.
The post is wrong.
The original post by tek411 makes this clear.
I wasted a day before realizing this wouldn't work on my hardware.
I HAVE however gotten an older mac OS, Tiger I think, running in VMware (slowly) on this hardware. Anybody have advice on repeating this? I uninstalled and don't remember how I did it. Perhaps that would be a useful option for someone without a virtualization-capable chip.

The torrent for the Snow Leopard OSx86 distro you linked to is broken. It looks like it downloads the torrent fine, but the .iso image only unpacks to 400MB, not 4GB, and gives an error. Maybe you or someone can create a new torrent that works?

It took me a few days but I got the files from Rapidshare and put together the iso. Thanks for the instructions. Everything is crystal clear until step 6.

I took my best guess as to what I should check or leave unchecked for my AMD-based HP dv6000 laptop, but when I restart, I get dropped into a command line. I tried this on my pc core i5 (quad core) with virtual box installed in windows 7.
The problem with extracting the zip file happened to me too. But I could easily extract it in Ubuntu. (I think the archive is created either in mac otr linux and may not extract in windows)
The problem of not having a hard disk partioton for installing os x – when you get that screen, go to utilities tab on the top, select disk utilities, select the partition and erase(format) it. I got resolution of 1024X768, which is not too bad.

Which version of WinRar? I've tried an older one, 7zip, latest WinZip, and freezip. Latest WinZip almost got it, but crapped out when it found 2 different file sizes – I could see the ISO in the right size, but when it gave me the error, either button I pressed deleted it. And what's this _MACOSX folder in the zip? All it has in it is a VERY small file with the same name as the iso, but with a trailing “.” in front. Any help is GREATLY appreciated! 🙂

Hi, my processor is Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 and Intel website states it doesn't support hardware virtualization! Still i tried installing Leopard iPC_OSx86_10_5_6_Universal_PPF5_Final and Snow Leopard from the distro provided here (Cos i read in Virtual Box manual that virtualization is still possible without harware support). Both failed!! I used VirtualBox-3.2.8-64453. The installation was dead stating “System config file '/com.apple.Boot.Slist' not found”. When I tried in verbose mode, it got stuck saying “USBF…….::CheckSleepCapability – OHCI controller will be unloaded across sleep”. Is there any way out of this? Is there any other way to install Snow Leopard without virtual box? Thank u

The file you have to download, osx86 distro is a .torrent file, so in step three when I try to set it as a cd/dvd there is an error because it has to be an .iso file.

Not sure if you got yer answer or not but here it is. The file you download is torrent file. You would open it with a torrent program such as “utorrent”. Utorrent would then download the .iso for you. This torrent file is tiny, while the download you seek it huge.

I had the very same problem. After a few days testing and looking for solutions, I found the answer just in on of the comments below :o)
Check the size of the ISO file. If your ISO file has the size of 385.10MB, you'll get the EBIOS error. Extract the ISO file by WinRAR (instead of the builtin windows extractor) and you'll get an ISO file with the size 4.38GB. Using the 4GB ISO file, you'll be able to process with the installation without the EBIOS read error.
hope, this helps 🙂

A warning: as of Sep 2010, guest Snow Leopard 10.6.2, x86-modified Hazard distro, under VirtualBox 3.2.8 (no Guest Additions supported yet), appears to be an order of magnitude slower than VMWare 7 (especially when it comes to GUI response). Thanks everyone! I finally got it to work!!
I have AMD Turion X2. In customization, I used Legacy Kernerel and AMD Patch, use only one core(default), installation took 6+ hours (I left it on all night long so don’t know exactly how much). It’s a little laggy, but adding more RAM should help me.

Has anyone had any success installing XCode and the iOS 4.1 SDK on this virtual machine? I have tried so many times, but even thought the installer says “Installation Successful”, theres nothing there. Its as if all of the installed files are invisible. Has anyone had a similar problem, or can anyone confirm this? I would really love some help!

Thanx for the guide !
Finally I got it to work on my AMD Phenom based PC. I had to choose the blackknight kernel and chamelon rc3 pcefi 10.5. I also had to run virtualbox in english (originally I ran in Swedish but then I wasn't able to choose language when installing OSX, empty list).
No sound however, would really like sound…
Thx again for the guide !

THANK YOU: I just did it with your help! [Asus Laptop, K52J, i350M, 4 GB RAM, Win7]
Followed your explanation, guessed that I need to check the “Server version” at step 6, installed xCode. I already can display the iPhone simulator!
One suggestion: to install xCode, the size of the Virtual Dosk should be more than 20 GB [30 GB should be OK]

I want to install xCode too, but if a do a software update to the newest version of Mac OSx I get a Kernel Panic. Where I can found the suggestion that you have received? I didnt find it in the comments… Thx!

I run the OSX, but it goes to the startup loading screen where I press F8. After that it loses the “Press F8 for options”…i then press -v and Enter (I don’t think it recognizes the -v because if I just press Enter, it does the same thing). It then proceeds to load Darwin (it is successful, and Darwin boots up), but then as Darwin does its thing…it gets stuck at “BDS root: disk1s2, major 14, minor 3.” and never gets to the install screen. What can I do? Here is my computer’s information: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1563581
