The date is 10th of July, 2018 and we are celebrating Apple’s iOS App Store’s 10th Birthday. Did you know that the first iPhone launched during 2007 did not have an App Store? Can you imagine an iDevice without App Store which now stocks millions of 3rd Party Apps? The reason why Apple did not ship the first ever iPhone without App Store was that steve Jobs was personally against introducing 3rd party apps onto the iPhone ecosystem. In fact, the original iPhone carried a lot many App features built-in. However with passage of time (only one more year), Jobs realised the power of 3rd party Apps and the impact they had on growth and development of Apple Ecosystem and allowed for App Store platform which would host these Apps which were not ‘Made by Apple’.
y 10, 2008 with 500 apps, it ignited a cultural, social and economic phenomenon that changed how people work, play, meet, travel and so much more. Over the past decade, the App Store has created a safe place for users of all ages to get the very best apps and a vibrant app economy for developers of all sizes, from all over the world, to thrive. Today, customers in 155 countries are visiting the App Store more often, staying longer and downloading and using more apps than ever before,” explains Apple.
Apple further explains, “Before 2008, the software industry was dominated by a few large companies. The App Store opened the door for any developer, from one-person shops to large studios, to come up with a great idea, build a high quality app and seamlessly deliver it to the growing number of customers around the world that today exceeds 1 billion people.”
These markets like App Store and Google Play Store have helped launched a dozen of multi-million earner Apps as well as help bring more and more people into their respective ecosystems. Later realising the importance of App Store like platform, Microsoft introduced Store App in Windows 8 and consequently on the Windows 10. Apple went on further to augment App Store’s presence in iPad, Apple TV and even Apple Watch.
