HEVC H.265 vs H.264 video codec

Video codecs control the videos streaming networks around the web whether its YouTube or video stream from VH1, Hulu, or your favorite sports channel. A Good video codec can ensure good quality video at lower bandwidth and bitrate.

H.264 Mp4 video codec has been industry standard for video on the web as well as HD videos offline. However, due to licensing issues, it had lot of trouble. Eventually Google came up with VP8 trying to make video codecs free for everyone. ITU has now raised the bar with H.265 video codec that doubles the bandwidth efficiency of the H.265 Codec over H.264, by using hald the bandwidth required for transmitting a similar video. e.g. a 2Mbps video @30fps 1280×720 using H.264 can be transmitted at 1Mbps @30fps 1280×720, and still look sharper. What this means is that you can now have all those fullhd videos at half the size required for storage.

H.265 encoding and decoding is also optimized for parallel processing for faster overall transcoding using multi-core CPUs.

H.265 supports higher resolution videos upto 8K vs. H.264’s 4K resolution at 30FPS.
