OnePlus launched their latest flagship phone the OnePlus 5. Worth noting is that they launched OnePlus 3T barely 7 months ago. Till date OnePlus 3T is still a leading industry challenger is in no way going out with advent on OnePlus 5. In fact, users are caught up in a rift as to which phone to buy. Further there are the 3T owners who are unsure if it is worth upgrading to OnePlus 5 right now. We try to help you make a clear choice through this article.
As we know it, after OnePlus 3, the 4th generation of their flagship series in the form of OnePlus 3T was introduced omitting the number ‘4’, being considered unlucky in China. Now the next generation blockbuster has come to the markets and it is called OnePlus 5.
BODY: The slim dimensions of OnePlus 5 are 154.2 x 74.1 x 7.3 mm and OnePlus 3T are 152.7 x 74.7 x 7.4 mm. However both the phones feature full metal uni-body construction and quite a few Design & Hardware elements remain the same. Other phones which come close in dimensions are the Google Pixel XL and Apple iPhone 7 Plus (larger).
Despite of big appearance, both the OnePlus 5 (153 g) and OnePlus 3T (158 g) are lighter than other flagship phones. Both phones have fingerprint sensors on front bottom side.
DISPLAY: Nothing different to discuss here, both phones have Optic AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 5.5 inch display and similar resolutions of 1080 x 1920 pixels.
UNDER THE HOOD: The One Plus 5 runs on Octa-core (4×2.45 GHz Kryo & 4×1.9 GHz Kryo) which quicker that the iPhone 7 and is a slight upgrade over Pixel. While OnePlus 3T, at its time, shipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor. Both phones stay at lower temperatures with decent loads of graphic processing tasks.
MEMORY: OnePlus 3T came with 6 GB of RAM and OnePlus 5 ships with two versions of 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM. Both phones have 128 GB internal memory model which suffices space needs for most of the users.
CAMERA: Most striking difference between the two phones is the dual rear camera in OnePlus 5. While OnePlus 3T comes with 16 MP and aperture of f/2.0 with LED flash, OnePlus 5 comes with Dual rear cameras : 16 MP with f/1.7, 24mm & 20 MP with f/2.6, 36mm with dual-LED flash.
The dual rear camera does deliver depth in images and the camera app has been totally upgraded and is hardly distinguishable from the Apple iPhone 7 camera App.
BATTERY: OnePlus 5 comes with 3,300 mAh battery which is slightly smaller than OnePlus 3T which has a 3,400 mAh battery. Specs apart, the OnePlus 5 still lasts longer thanks to efficient Snapdragon 835 chip. Both the phones have Dash charge feature allowing full charging of phones with fraction of time it takes to charge other phones.
Both phones runs Oxygen OS which is based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, with several tweaks here and there.
For the first time buyers of OnePlus phone, the OnePlus 5 is arguably the best BUDGET Android phone you can buy without compromising on high-end features and performance and ergonomics. It also has a faster processor, slightly longer lasting efficient battery and especially an upgraded Dual rear camera.
The existing OnePlus 3 owners will largely only miss the Dual camera, if they can come over this shortcoming, they really don’t need to upgrade over their existing phone. Perhaps wait till OnePlus 6 comes out maybe..
