Everything that has a beginning must have an end; so is the story of Sir Jonathan Paul “Jony” Ive, KBE, HonFREng, RDI, Apple’s famed longtime design chief. The news, which came as a rude shock was announced by Apple. They said that he would be leaving Apple later in the year. However, one wonders why such important personnel @ Apple is leaving? Well, the reason given was that he would be leaving to start his own independent design company called LoveFrom. On the good side, it was affirmed that Apple would still enjoy the top-notch services rendered by Johy Ive as they would be among Jony’s organization’s primary clients. It was clarified that Apple would continue to benefit from John’s talents by working with him on exclusive projects. To show that their relationship did not end on a sour note, Apple CEO, Tim Cook also said that after working with John for a lot of years, he was happy that their relationship had continued to evolve.
On Jony’s part, when interviewed, he cited two cogent reasons why he was leaving Apple. His first reason for deciding to leave was because of the completion of projects like Apple Park which he’d been working closely on and the state of Apple’s design team. In his interview he affirmed that he felt that the establishment of his own independent design company LoveFrom, was in some ways related to the health and optimum performance of Apple’s design team. He however said that he’d be looking forward to contribute to projects they’d been working on; some for many years in a completely different way.
Indeed, Jony Ive will leave an indelible legacy on Apple when he finally leaves as he has led the company’s design team for twenty-three years; since 1996. During that period, he succeeded in becoming on of Apple’s most iconic figures. You’ll probably be wondering why that is right? Well to douse your curiosity, other than Tim Cook, he has widely been regarded as one of the most important executives at the company. In fact, he played a pivotal role in the company’s history and making it develop into one of the world’s most valuable technology companies. Also, he was a close confidant of the late owner of the company, Steve Jobs. Jony joined the company when it was on the brink of bankruptcy and helped develop it to become the first publicly traded US company worth more than $1 trillion, a position which the company held for a brief period in 2018.
In the course of his more than twenty years at the company, Jony did a number of groundbreaking things one of which was leading the company through hallmark product launches in new categories ranging from the iMac, the iPhone and more recently, the Apple watch. He has been responsible for designing both the software and hardware components that all Apple devices run on. Deservingly, he has won numerous awards.
