Audio Technica AT2020TYO – Review

Audio Technica AT2020TYO was released way back in 2004. To our surprise, a product first released more than a decade ago still holds credibility in 2020. At its price segment, it’s the most popular and versatile microphone to the date.

Coming in an about $150, the kit includes a strong, steady, decently weighted, and well-constructed microphone arm with an XLR cable built-in that runs through the entire structure, a pair of reasonable designed M20 headphones, the adapter for screwing at the bottom end of the microphone and lastly the star of the show, the microphone itself. The overall aesthetics have not changed even a bit. Placed side by side with older models, one can hardly differentiate the latest iteration from its older sibling.

Moving on to the technical side, it has a condenser type element with a cardioid polar pattern. The frequency response broadens upon a wide spectrum of 20-20 kHz. Moreover, it has a decent impedance of 100 ohms and a crisp signal to noise ratio of 74 dB at 1 kHz.

Weighing in at about 345 grams, it’s quite portable.  With the amazing recording quality comes a bit of trade-off. As this an XLR type microphone so it requires a fan and power to operate. The microphone segment surely has many options better than this, but the amount of features that Audio Technica AT2020TYO offers in such a price bracket outweighs the rest by a reasonable margin.

The rugged and robust construction provides durable performance and a wide dynamic range ensures unmatched versatility for various scenarios. Specifically designed and engineered diaphragm administer a wide range of frequency characteristics and high caliber transient response. The cardioid polar pattern scales down the pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, improving isolation of desired sound source. Moreover, the included stand mount enables users to easy and precise placement of the microphone.

Lastly, the price to a performance standard of Audio Technica AT2020TYO makes it an all-time favorite product among bloggers, script recorders, podcasters, voice-overs, and many more.
