OnePlus 6T – Impressions

While we did a round-up on rumors before the OnePlus 6T launch. The event, we must say, was one of the most energetic ones we attended of late. Why would it not be so? OnePlus is after all a community brand. They are one such company that takes their community seriously. Back in May 2018, OnePlus 6 was launched and brought in way too many upgrades over the existing OnePlus 5T: To name a few: Screen notch, Both Front and Back Glass, Splash resistance, Snapdragon 845, Adreno 630. While the rear dual and front single camera did not receive a refresh over the OnePlus 5T.

Just over 5 months from launch of OnePlus 6, the company has launched OnePlus 6T and the phone has a few upgrades across the specs list. The most striking change in the absence of rear fingerprint sensor, which now has moved under the screen of OnePlus 6T. And as the company claims, it is the fastest in-display fingerprint sensor in the industry. However our usage of the phone unlocked the phone quite quickly sometimes and while other times it took a while to unlock. With betterments in battery use with Android OS 9, OnePlus 6T is expected to give out much longer on-screen time thanks to a bigger battery. In order to accommodate the bigger battery, the phone’s thickness was increased a bit and the edges were give a curved shape, perhaps to fit a thicker phone better in the user’s hands.

Our overall experience of the in-screen fingerprint sensor has been better in case of OnePlus 6T in comparison to Vivo and Oppo smartphones shipping in with the similar feature. The sensor is quite fast and reliable, even with wet fingers.

The new Tear drop notch is much smaller than one on OnePlus 6, and appears very less intrusive in full screen landscape mode videos. The speaker grill has been pushed up to the edge with no major loss in audio output of the phone.

The OnePlus’ signature alert slider is still there, while it has been moved down a bit in order to be in approachable distance of the user’s thumb. The overall design language of OnePlus 6T is very much in line with the OnePlus 6 with no major divergent design. The smaller notch and chin gives out a bigger display i.e. 6.41 inches over OnePlus 6’s 6.28 inches. While the Optic AMOLED display continues to awe impress us with a slightly better resolution at 1080 x 2340 pixels. The screen delivers a good contrast and is almost as bright as the OnePlus 6.

The latest Corning Gorilla Glass 6 screen protection on the OnePlus 6T is a big leap for clumsy user’s like us who do not use guard case and yet drop our phones “like it’s hot”.

The surprises start hitting the user when they approach the bottom side of the phone, only to notice the missing 3.5mm Headphone jack. Whatever happened to the #NeverSettle without the headphone thingy? Bluetooth 5 isn’t the gold standard for audio output yet and what about our existing accessories (OnePlus Bullets) that work with the headphone jack? OnePlus will now supply Type-C wired Bullet headphones.

Apart form the in-display fingerprint sensor, the OnePlus 6T continues to port sensors like accelerometer, gyro, proximity and compass.

Qualcomm’s flagship chipset for 2018, Snapdragon 845, finds place under the hood of the OnePlus 6T with Octa-core (4×2.8 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4×1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) CPU. And continues to be augmented by Adreno 630 GPU. With the software optimizations on the Oxygen OS (Based on Android 9 Pie), graphic intensive games and heavy wares load faster with “Smart Boost” feature. The 6GB to 8GB RAM gets loaded with the ware and hence leads to 5 to upto 20% faster App loading. Android 9 really bumps up the performance delivery in games and elsewhere. Gestures are more fluidic.

The Big deal, as announced by co-founder Carl Pei, is the tie up with carrier T-mobile and compatibility with Verizon in the US. This would open floodgates of users for the OnePlus 6T.

And upgrade was anticipated in the Camera department, however OnePlus has shun any physical improvements in the rear dual camera setup that has 16 MP primary camera with f/1.7 aperture and focal length of 1.22µm, (Optical Stabilization). The second camera continues to be a 20 MP camera with f/1.7 aperture and 1.0µm focal length. Same front single selfie camera with 16 MP, f/2.0 aperture with focal length of 1.0µm. The chunk of optimizations one observes in the OnePlus 6T are limited to the camera App. One can observe optimizations to the portrait mode which has lighting mode similar to the Apple iPhone Camera. And the new Nightscape mode which is similar to the Google Pixel Camera.

The OnePlus 6T’s battery takes a leap from 3400 mAh to 3700 mAh (Li-Po) battery. The bigger battery, along with software optimizations both on Android 9 and the customizations in Oxygen Os, lash out an almost 8 hours heavy usage time. Which by far is among the best in the premium smartphones.

So should you buy the OnePlus 6T? Yes! Absolutely if you have OnePlus 5 or less or are coming from any other phone and want complete bang-for-buck smartphone. If you already on OnePlus 6, you should switch only if you want a bigger battery, smaller notch and in-display fingerprint sensor.
