Samsung Galaxy S9 : Review – After 2 months

Samsung Galaxy S series denotes flagship smartphones by Samsung that capture the imagination of the users and brings in the latest in mobile technologies with every new launch. We have been using the Samsung Galaxy S9 for over two months now and not a single day passes by when we are not awe-ed by the phone’s features and performance. Both Galaxy S9 and S9+ phones have the cult leader status. Both have the iconic curved display (aka infinity display) which is a pure viewing delight. Tall screens, rear finger print scanners and AMOLED displays are the pinnacle of glory for two phones.

Personally being an owner of Galaxy S3, looking at the Dandelion featured in S9 marketing images revived my emotional link with the S series. Samsung has focused the marketing of S9 around the Camera, showing low-light shots and Super Slo-mo feature. While there is lot more to the phone than just the camera. Samsung has used Android Oreo’s capabilities along with the superb hardware of S9 to render features like AR emoji (similar to Apple’s Animoji), Live Translation, Face unlock, screen-sharing, etc. Th Galaxy S9 is a Dual SIM phone.

BODY: The dimensions of 147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5 mm and weight of 163 grams continue the legacy of the predecessor Galaxy S8. The phone has both front and rear Gorilla Glass 5 protection and has an Aluminium Frame. And is IP68 certified for both Dust and Water resistance upto 1.5 meters for upto 30 minutes. The company has listened closely to feedback from Galaxy S8 users and moved the finger print sensor to a more reachable place, under the Camera. Reaching the Sensor next to the camera was stretch considering the tall built of S8. The response speed of the finger print sensor is very fast.

The design language is based on the idea that users get to “See More. Hold Less.” and same is pronounced in the wide edge-to-edge display while phone can be held with easy. And the pixel density of ~570ppi makes viewing a bliss.

DISPLAY: The Samsung Galaxy S9 has a 5.8 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen lashing out 1440 x 2960 pixels resolution. Which is exactly simila rot Galaxy S8, yet way ahead of the completition like Apple iPhone X which dwindles with a meager 1125 x 2436 pixels and ~458 ppi pixel density. The curved AMOLED displays which is a pure viewing pleasure for the user. Screen is secured by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 tech which protects the screen from scratches and provides fall resistance to a certain extent. The screen-to-body ratio is maintained at ~83.6%.

Also worth noticing is that the phone does not have Notch design, rather the Top Bezel is fully packed with: earpiece, Selfie Camera, Sensors and LED notification blinker. The ‘Always-on’ display feature is a thumbs-up feature! Also, like other Samsung flagship phones, users have the option to setup custom themes using the Samsung Themes App. The Samsung Bixby is catching up fast with Google Assistant which still is a market leader. The Super Slo-mo captures shot by the Galaxy S9 camera can be used as screensavers, an owner’s delight.

UNDER THE HOOD: The Galaxy S9 runs on Octa-core (4×2.8 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4×1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) for phones supplied in North America and China, tad higher than the S8. The processor is fitted on a Exynos Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 with Adreno 630 GPU. This combination is completely in sync with all components and delivers fastest of performances.

Samsung DeX feature allows to use the Galaxy S9 screen as a toughpad when you connect the phone onto the DeX Pad which is further connected to a monitor screen. The phone turns into a Desktop and all the phone data can be accessed on the connected screen.

All this and the diligent Camera software does show hard work of Samsung Team.

Dual Apertures ensure adequate light capture in varied situations. The category-defining Dual Aperture adapts to bright light and super low light automatically.  Another feature called the Super Slow-mo showcases the capture power of the Galaxy S9 camera with captures at mind boggling 960 frames per second. You can set up Slow-mo captures as your lock-screen too. Feature called the “Live Focus” works towards delivering great portrait images.
