Can Samsung’s 5x Optical Zoom Smartphone Rival the Huawei P30 Pro?

Huawei continues to blow customers away, offering low priced smartphones to rival the biggest brands, such as Apple and Samsung. The Huawei Pro P30 was especially noteworthy, promising to “re-write the rules of photography”, offering both a SuperZoom and a wide angle lens that blew the competition out of the water. Huawei has tapped into a customer base that wanted to take crisp and beautiful images, but weren’t willing to lug around large camera equipment nor spend the money on lenses. If Samsung want to remain relevant, then improving their phones’ cameras is essential. Fortunately, they are close to releasing a smartphone which achieves this.

Why was the P30 Pro so Revolutionary for Photographers?

If you are into photography, then you’ll know that cameras require several different lenses. It is impossible to have one lens that can do everything. This has always been the problem with the smartphone: they come with one lens. Huawei realized that this wasn’t optimum and came out with the world’s first triple lens smartphone with the P20. It came with a 40MB RGB sensor, a 20MB monochrome sensor, and an 8GB telephoto lens. The P30 takes these elements and makes them better, with a staggering 50x zoom. This versatility is key in taking great photos, but the zoom is like nothing a smartphone could ever have achieved before.

Samsung: Combining Slimness with Lens Quality

For the average consumer, the Huawei’s 5x zoom will offer the sharpest images, with the 50x zoom offering only blurred results due to stabilization issues. So, if you are an amateur photographer, building a photo collage, then a 5x zoom is plenty. This is why Samsung has focused its efforts on designing a 5x telephoto lens. Unlike other smartphones, this won’t protrude from the back of the phone, but has been designed from the ground up with slimness in mind. At just 5 mm in thickness, this is thinner than some 2x zooms. By stacking the technology horizontally, new Samsung Notes will offer the same incredible photos as other phones, but with none of the bulk.

The race to offer the best camera in a smartphone is on. Huawei are leading the way, but news leaked from Samsung’s head office suggest exciting innovations down the road. Only time will tell whether they come up with the quality promised, but if it is anything like the P30 pro, then budding photographers should keep their eyes peeled for the next generation of Samsung smartphones.
