Comparison – OnePlus 8 Pro Vs OnePlus 7 Pro – worth the upgrade?

The OnePlus 8 Pro was launched on April 24, 2020 with great pomp and show (mostly online). The phone with flagship specs runs on Android 10 out of the box. It has 8 processing horses under the hood – 2.84 GHz, Single core, Kryo 585 + 2.42 GHz, Tri core, Kryo 585 + 1.8 GHz, Quad-core, Kryo 585. This is supported by plethora of a RAM space of 8 GB and 128 GB internal memory. And these horses run on a war chariot of Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Chipset.

Flagship features and spec makes one wonder if they should upgrade from their OnePlus 7 Pro or even buy the 7 Pro over OnePlus 8 Pro. Yes! the OnePlus 8 Pro has 5G capabilities, has a bigger battery, boasts of wireless charging, but does the price gap justify its purchase over OnePlus 7 Pro?

The one-year-old OnePlus 7 Pro is still a strong flagship killer smartphone. It has flagship flanking specs and an awesome 6.67 inch AMOLED display. It has an industry-leading 2.84 GHz octa-core processor based on one generation older Snapdragon 855 chipset, which by no means is a laggard. Basis the discussion so far, could we call OnePlus 8 Pro a mild upgrade over OnePlus 7 Pro? May be and maybe not.

Let’s do a spec comparison before arriving at conclusions.

Display

The game-changer here is that OnePlus 8 Pro has industry-leading 120 Hz refresh rate, which is great for gaming and renders fluid display transitions. OnePlus 7 Pro works on 90 Hz display. But if you keep 120 Hz always on, it will drain much more battery, fact that OnePlus realized and bumped by 8 Pro’s battery by an additional 510 mAh.

The 90 Hz refresh rate of OnePlus 7 Pro still propels it among the flagships, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and iPhone 11 Pro Max have lower refresh rates. Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL both have 90 Hz rates.

Under the hood

OnePlus 8 Pro rightly plays the generation divide game here. It has the same configuration as its predecessor but one notch up on each aspect. It has chipset, CPU and GPU configurations as Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, Octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 585 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 585 & 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 585) and Adreno 650, respectively.

OnePlus 7 Pro is a near finisher with one year older chipset, CPU and GPU configurations as Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, Octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 485 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 485 & 4×1.78 GHz Kryo 485) and Adreno 640, respectively.

OnePlus 7 Pro does not lag behind with 3 different memory variants: 128GB 6GB RAM, 256GB 8GB RAM and 256GB 12GB RAM.

Battery

Both smartphones have Non-removable Li-Po batteries, but the difference starts to appear as we delve further. The OnePlus 8 Pro has 4510 mAh battery and OnePlus 7 Pro has an inferior 4000 mAh battery.

While OnePlus 7 Pro has the OnePlus signature 30W Warp Charge, OnePlsu 8 Pro goes up by a notch with 30 W wireless fast charging. 8 Pro also has reverse wireless charging 3W capabilities.
