Oppo Find X : Change the rules and how

In case you noticed, the most recent smartphone reviews of 2018 flagship phones have seen the phones converging into a similar Candy Bar shape, loaded with powerful specs. The 2018 flagship phones would only beg to diverge on one question, whether to “Notch” or not. While the Oppo Find X breaks the cage of expectations and puts the heat back into smartphone industrial design. The phone’s uniqueness in terms of design puts Oppo back in focus.

Every now and then Oppo has not shied themselves away from experimenting with new things in phone design, thereby breaking away from convention. Like the Oppo Find 5 was the first phone with 1080p screen in a smartphone. While the competition is busy debating whether to “Notch” or not, Oppo Find X’s rear and front Cameras get a new drift, literally!

Oppo Find X has a modular Industrial Design with no Bezels, Curved and Rounded corners, Full front screen with edge to edge display and intense colors on the glass back. The phone does not have wireless charging and no headphone jack either. The phone does have thickness of 9mm to accomodate the slider mechanism possibly.

The phone speakers are hidden along the top seams of the phone. and the bottom side has the USB type-C port, bottom speaker, mic and SIM card slot.

As there is no finger print sensor, phone can be unlocked using the Face ID unlock or use screen method like passcode or swipe pattern. Face ID unlocking is fast and nifty. As soon as you swipe ‘up’ on the screen to unlock, the camera slides out simultaneously. The phone identifies the user and camera slides back in almost instantaneously. The whole unlocking process completes within 1 second. That is as fast as the Apple iPhone X unlocking process.

BODY: The dimensions of 156.7 x 74.2 x 9.4 mm make the Oppo Find X as one of the biggest flagship smartphones, falling into the league of “Plus” size models. It weighs 186 grams, lighter than the Vivo Nex S, the only other phone that features a sliding camera. This phone has both front and rear Gorilla Glass 5 protection and has an Aluminium Frame. On the left side we have the Power button and volume rockers. Oppo claims to have achieved 93.8% screen-to-body ratio on the Find X. However there is no Fingerprint reader anywhere on the phone, not even under-glass one like the Vivo Nex S.

The camera slider not only reveals the rear and front cameras, it also brings out : Flood Illuminator, Infrared Camera, Ranging Sensor, Dot Projector (Face ID) for the Front Camera.

Ofcourse the concept of ‘motorization’ has its set of drawbacks for a product as small as the smartphone. As the motors are bound to fail and may only work upto a specific lifetime of ‘Ups’ and ‘Downs’. This may also not allow full water or dust sealing of the smartphone. A grain of sand can spoil the game for the camera mechanism in Oppo Find X.

DISPLAY: The Oppo Find X has an astounding 6.42 inch AMOLED Capacitive touchscreen. The AMOLED screen at a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels delivers a decent viewing pleasure. Obviously the AMOLED commands a certain praise which adds an edge to the Oppo Find X. Also the ~401 ppi pixel density just mathes the competition. Screen is secured by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 tech which protects the screen from scratches and provides fall resistance to a certain extent. The screen-to-body ratio is maintained at ~93.8%.

Motor : The Vivo Nex only has one small drawer comprising of front camera sliding out when camera app is launched. But the Oppo Find X takes the ‘sliding out’ experience to a whole new level with the full top piece simply sliding out. Oppo Find X motor motor might have been rated for sliding action by a million times for it to last throughout the phone’s lifetime.

UNDER THE HOOD: The phone runs on Octa-core (4×2.8 GHz Kryo 385 Gold & 4×1.7 GHz Kryo 385 Silver) which is now a Gold Standard in all high performance 2018 smartphones. The processor is fitted on a Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 with Adreno 630 GPU. This combination is completely in sync with all components and delivers fastest of performances in phones like the Samsung Galaxy S9 as well as the OnePlus 6.

Phone runs on Android 8 (Oreo) and is upgradable to Android 9 (P).

MEMORY: Oppo Find X does not have a memory expansion slot. However this may not be viewed as limitation with a robust internal memory of 256 GB and an enormous 8 GB RAM. This memory combo will not leave you asking for more.

CAMERA: The Dual Camera combination on Oppo Find X is : 16 MP (f/2.0, aperture) + 20 MP (f/2.0, aperture) and it is loaded with phase detection autofocus and a smart looking dual-LED dual-tone flash. The 16 MP camera has Optical Image Stabilization. The rear cameras can shoot high quality videos at a maximum of 2160p@30fps.

The front sliding camera is a 25 MP (f/2.0, aperture) camera. A very capable secondary camera indeed.

BATTERY: The Oppo Find X comes with fast charging charging feature. The Non-removable Li-Ion 3730 mAh battery should last long enough with several camera sliding movements through the day.

The phone will be available in 3 color options: Bordeaux Red, Glacier Blue and Lamborghini version (to be announced).
