Razer Phone 2 – first impressions

Razer, the company with logo of a triple-headed snake, calls itself “the world’s leading lifestyle brand for gamers”. Razer is an established name in performance gaming industry across the globe and is also a provider of Razer Blade gaming laptops. They created quite a stir among the mobile gaming enthusiast community during 2017 with their initial Razer Phone.

This time round, Razer is trying to offer an upgraded Gaming utility smartphone, which also offers flagship performance superiority. The Razer Phone 2 is said to deliver upto 30% better performance than Razer 1 while garnering support from performance flagship components and innovative cooling tech.

Razer continues to exhibit their prowess with unique 120 HZ display screen, same as the previous Razer phone. While the company did not focus on

There are several improvements over initial phone in various departments. Like the Glass Aluminum body, IP67 waterproofing, RGB Illuminated Razer Chroma Logo, etc. Company did not focus much on reducing the bezels and thereby improving the Screen-to-body ration which hovers in similar range as the predecessor at ~72%. No focus on notch either, to notch or not to notch is not the question here. The majority of upgrades seem to push the phone into a Flagship, and try to project the phone as possible daily driver for the masses. All this, while not losing the Gaming luster.

Shape of the phone still continues to be edgy and gives a box feel with dimensions of 158.5 x 79 x 8.5 mm. Wireless charging and the unique charging dock are a big add-on.

The glowing razer logo at the back can display 16.8 million colors and is fully customizable. It replaces LED notification light found in many popular smartphones.

The screen resolution and aspect ratio remain same as previous Razer phone at 1440 x 2560 pixels, and 16:9 ratio, respectively.

An all new Camera App and dual 12 MP rear cameras deliver well. The wide-angle lens also has OIS and the other Telephoto lens delivers a 2x zoom and comes with Sony IMX sensors.

Under the hood, the phone is powered by Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 and Adreno 630 GPU. The 8 GB RAM complements the other performance parts. And the non-removable 4000 mAh Li-Po battery keeps the show running for longer durations.

While the Snapdragon 845 delivers immersive XR experiences seamlessly, it also provides a secure environment. It also delivers up to 1.2 Gbps peak download speeds across a broader spectrum—our platform is smarter and faster than ever before. Same Snapdragon platform is now being offered by leading players of competition i.e. Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Samsung Galaxy S 9, Asus Zenfone 5Z, Sony Xperia XZ2. Such powerhouse of a processor and GPU are kept calm using a vapor chamber cooling system.

There is no headphone jack and the finger print sensor continues to be on the side rather than on back.

Razer phone 2 looks promising. An already established powerhouse smartphone series, being blended into a ultra-powerful flagship while conserving its Gaming pedigree.
