Top 5 at Apple WWDC 2018

So Apple gave a round-up on their latest and greatest Software offerings / announcements at WWDC event held at San Jose Convention Center, California. The event has been pretty much a gypsophila of things Great to Good things. Some are really groundbreaking like the advancements in AR (Augmented Reality) while others are merely a catch-up play with the competition. And there is the third category where Apple isn’t doing either of the two options, it is allowing Third-Party Apps to do the needful e.g. allowing Google Maps to run on Apple CarPlay.

No. 5: Apple Watch OS upgrade – Watch OS 5 features Activity Sharing where people can share workout summaries with each other, something that uptill now was limited to iPhone Apps like RunKeeper, Runtastic and likes of it. The Apple Watch will now automatically detect exercising activity and start logging the user’s activity in case user forgets to start logging manually. The Old Skool PTT (Push To Talk) is back, this time on the watch! They added the Podcast App to the Watch OS and you can avoid saying “Hey Siri” everytime you raise your wrist.

No. 4: Apple TV – Where they seem to be collaborating with various leading content providers to mop up all the content before the competition does. There are some great Video Screensavers that leave you Awe-struck.  And they added Dolby Atmos support for best of audio delivery, yes, that is a big development and Sound has nearly caught up with the 4K video quality of Apple Tv.

No. 3: AR (Augmented Reality) – Google has already launched a slew of AR support features both in their phones (Google’s Home Made recipes as well as OEMs) and the Android OS. Youtube AR App, the Camera App has new AR Stickers, and support being offered to third-party content providers via Google’ ARCore SDK. So Apple is playing catch up there with a specific AR file format called USDX. And they’ve gone all out to collaborate with Adobe to deliver live as well as shared AR experience among users. Shared AR looks like the step big leap in AR as people would come together and work on projects simultaneously.

No. 2: Mac OS upgrade aka ‘Mojave’ – First of all, the upgrade is Free! But the place where you play aka the Mac App Store has undergone a visual upgrade. Some of the popular iOS Apps have been ported to Mac, like Home, News and Stocks. This is perhaps the time where there has been a reverse brain-drain, otherwise usually Apps move from Mac to the iOS. And there  is the ‘Dark Mode’ that is a Pro thing to have. Desktop Stacks is another cool looking feature that stacks up your cluttered desktop by logically segregating them.

No.1: iOS 12 – The first and foremost and perhaps the most commendable fature for the latest iOS 12 is that it will continue support for iPhone 5s and the successive iPhone versions. Usually this is not done, every iOS update forgets the older models while it covers the latest releases. Not only this, the new iOS 12 will also improve speeds of older iPhones too. They say that Apps will launch 40% faster, Keyboard will pop-up 50% faster and the Camera App will get 70% faster, depending on the iDevice you use. Good to see that iOS has caught up with the Group Notifications feature, it was greatly missed ever since Android brought it in. Seems like the Stacking thing is the new “in” for both the Mac and the iOS. The iOS 12 Beta version is already available for the pioneers btw! Anyways, the FaceTime has finally opened up like Google Hangouts and now allows upto 32 people joining into one Video Chat.

You can choose to select an emoji that looks just like you with Memoji. Animoji craze is catching up with Apple fans, Google however rarely bothers about it.

Siri is still catching up and is still far from the Google Assistant. And the Siri shortcuts exhibited on stage, like navigation shortcut is already there on Google Maps. However, if one can organise a string of automated events into one shortcut, this is like executing a batch file for cron jobs.
