Top WhatsApp Hidden Features

WhatsApp is perhaps the most used Instant Messaging App across the world. During February, 2018 its user base touched a new high of one and a half billion. Majority of users are based out of Brazil, India, United Kingdom and France. The company was taken over by Facebook during 2014 and that in no way has stopped the growth curve of App’s user base. The App can be accessed across various OS platforms like Android, iOS, Windows, WhatsApp Web (January 2015). Interestingly, WhatsApp has entered Payments space in India where it has a big user base. During February, 2017 WhatsApp crossed 200 million monthly active users in India.

Here are the Top hidden features of WhatsApp that you did not know existed:

Recover deleted Images : In case you accidentally deleted any image media on your phone, perhaps through the Image Gallery App, you can retrieve it back. All you need to do is to go to the Chat window where you received the Image from the Sender, and re-download it. This image remains available on WhatsApp servers for upto 30 days before being permanently removed. Just imagine the kind of virtual storage space WhatsApp uses to retain user media. However in case you delete the whole chat log all together, then the image will not be retrievable.

‘Read’ chat secretly : As users are aware that ‘Ticks’ attribute to the status of chat messages sent or received. That is, Single ‘Tick’ means message has been conveyed through your device’s network. Double ‘Tick’ denotes delivery to the Target device and Double ‘Blue Ticks’ denote Read Receipt. You may ‘Turn Off’ this setting via Settings > Account > Privacy > Read Receipts. This enables Privacy that neither you nor your friend on the other side can know the actual status of messages exchanged between you.

This was General Knowledge, now on to the First Stage Secret Part. You can read the received messages simply by dragging down the WhatsApp alert from the Notification Bar and further dragging down the messages from a specific contact. Once you close the notification drawer, the messages maintain their ‘unread’ status, unless you open the WhatsApp App and check the messages.

Now onto some Geek Level stuff in the Second Stage Secret Part. First enable “Aeroplane Mode” or the “Flight Mode” of your device. Once your device snoozes to Offline mode, open the WhatsApp App and read all the unread messages. Once you are through with your reading, Goto Home, Open the multi-window and ‘Close’ the WhatsApp App. Now Turn off the “Aeroplane Mode” and Viola! All your messages will have unread status.

Media Visibility : A relatively new feature of WhatsApp is the Media Visibility feature wherein the user can decide whether a shared media should pop up in their device’s Gallery or not. This means, once you’ve downloaded and seen Images, Videos, Voice Messages over WhatsApp, you can choose whether the downloaded media should stay on your device and get mixed with other media in your Device’s Gallery or just go off the device as soon as you’ve seen it. This will help reduce filling up of Storage space on your device by leaps and bounds. As we all know and acknowledge, WhatsApp forwards really clutter up on the free space on the device.

Send Text to an unsaved Contacts : WhatsApp has this ‘Click Chat’ feature wherein you can simply send a message to a phone number without having to assign it a contact name. So no more Savings one-time use numbers or conversations. Like you dont have to Save your Uber driver’s number every time to share media with them. Goto http://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone= on your phone’s browser window and it will automatically take you to WhatsApp and start off a conversation.

Delete your Sent Messages everywhere : Sent out something that you do not want to standby by mistake? No worries! WhatsApp gives you 7 minutes to review your ‘Sent’ chat messages and you can long press the recently Sent message and “Delete it everywhere” form your device as well as devices of the recipients. While this feature may be quite popular with those who use this often, it only causes doubt in other person’s mind as to why the text was deleted.

Bonus Trivia:
