Google Pixel 2 : Hands-on

We bring you our hands-on for the Google Pixel 2 phone. This is the second phone in the the Google Pixel series after Google shifted away from branding its phones under ‘Nexus’ series.

The Google Pixel 2, quite similar to the Google Pixel, measures 145.7 x 69.7 x 7.8 mm (5.74 x 2.74 x 0.31 inches). And its ‘Squeeze the side edges’ gesture to launch Google Assistant is already talk of the town. Pixel 2 comes in aluminium chassis with curved glass panels at the top edge. Finger print sensor is slightly larger than Google Pixel.

The phone has 12.2 MP camera with f/1.8 lens and 8 MP front camera. But the specs here don’t reveal the full picture for the Google Pixel 2. Camera has a lot of dynamic range given the small sensor, which makes it an all round exceptional package. Something similar to Canon dual pixel tech. Each of the pixels are split into two which gives an amazing amount of depth to the shot images.

Unlike other popular dual camera phones like the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy phones have put two separate cameras, Pixel 2 has two split pixels that are hardly apart from each other (measured in microns). While both the dual camera and the split pixel camera serves the same purpose. None the less, the Pixel 2 camera gives an outstanding low light photography just like its predecessor.

The two tone finish at the back gives a retro-mod kinda looks, which are seriously non-techie. The glass finish, though prone to scratches and cracks (i cracked my Pixel XL rear glass just by putting it on table rather roughly). The always-on OLED display screens are just amazing. The Now Playing feature which uses your already always-listening mic (hearing out for “Ok Google”) to listen to the songs played around you is an absolute Audiophile’s delight. It just listens to keywords in songs and searches them across 70,000 songs stored locally on the device. Can you believe that?

And the Pixel 2 is water and dust resistant. And we really loved the stereo speakers on the Pixel 2.

In a nutshell, the key differences between Pixel 2 and its predecessor are : Octa-core CPU, better GPU & Chipset, more internal memory, dual-pixel autofocus camera, Bluetootj 5.0 and a slightly smaller battery.
