High performance smartphones line-up : 2018 Second Half

With first half of 2018 already having witnessed the ‘Notch’ revolution, it remains to be seen as to what will the trend be for the remaining half of an already-exciting 2018.

The front runner and perhaps the most anticipated launch of 2018 is the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, slated for launch on August 9, 2018. Samsung has already started issuing invites for their annual Unboxed event. This launch is ahead of Apple’s annual launch event during September where Apple is expected to launch the budget version of the new iPhone X, which might be christened “Apple iPhone 2018“.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will have the YELLOW S-Pen  with a button. S-Pen is expected to have Bluetooth connectivity and is likely to sport exciting new features based on its connectivity with the phablet. Now you might not have to touch the phone’s screen with pen to make things happen. The phone will have a relocation of the Finger Print Sesnor, i.e. right below the camera. The front camera may have the IRIS Scanner, Facial recognition and Intelligent Scan features. The Phone will continue to have the iconic Infinity Display powered by a bright Super AMOLED. A bieer battery at 4000 mAh should be a minimum fit for the phone. The predecessor had issues with battery, hopefully that’s been done and dusted by now. Might weigh around 200 grams. An optional 6 gB / 8 GB RAM would be desirable. And ofcourse the Camera hardware should match Galaxy S9+.

While Apple seems to be planning 3 simultaneous releases for their 2018 offering. Rumor mill is bustling with predictions with respect to the nomenclature to be followed in each of the three cases. They might as well call the bigger model “iPhone X Plus” or “iPhone X 2”. While the bidget model may be known as “iPhone 9” or “iPhone SE 2”. We also have reasons to believe that Apple strongly prefers the ‘X’ terminology, hence the LCD model may be known as “iPhone SE X”, LOL. The bigger model will continue to have Super OLED screen while the budget may have to do with IPS LCD screen. Apple might slash the price of OLED version and make it widely available and bring about the LCD model with a flank pricing strategy, killing the likes of Samsung, OnePlus, Huawei, LG, etc. And the latest series of iPhones might become functional playgrounds for the Apple Pencil.

Google has been continually slashing prices of its flagship Google Pixel 2 phones, which leads us to belive that the next generation Pixel is in offing. Although entering just the 3rd generation, the Pixel series has improved tremendously since 2016, the launch of the first Google Pixel smartphone. The Pixel 3 is expected to have a screen size of 5.4 inches with an aspect ratio of 18:9. While the bigger cousin, the Pixel 3 XL may have 6.2 inch screen with aspect ratio fo 19:9. The expected measures of the Pixel 3 would be 145.6 x 68.2 x 7.9 mm and the Pixel 3 XL may measure something like 158 x 76.6 x 7.9 mm. Like the previous release dates, the release of Pixel 3 is expected during October, 2018.

And last but not the least, the LG V40 ThinQ, the phone with 5 cameras, is expected to be released during September, 2018. V40 may follow the suit set of its predecessor V30 with Glass Back, extremely thin Bezels and a pOLED screen. LG may come up with a unique Face Unlock System that uses 3D mapping technology which is not set on the lines of Apple’s Face ID unlock system. V40 will also sport Notch design and will have Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor under the hood.

Pricing of all the phones discussed above is highly speculative, however we an be sure that as all Flagships seem to be converging at the top, pricing is definitely going to be a make or break scenario for new release of 2018 second half.
