Nokia 8 Sirocco : Phone review

Did you know Sirocco is name given to a Mediterranean wind that originates in the Sahara Desert and goes upto North Africa or even Southern Europe? Also, during the time of original Nokia brand, they christened one of their premium 8800 series ‘Sirocco’ back in September, 2006. That phone too carried a Stainless Steel frame. And unlike the 8800 series phone that shipped with Symbian OS, Nokia 8 Sirocco ships with Android 8 OS.

Nokia 8 Sirocco is definitely the best looking Nokia phone. At first glance it tries to resemble the Samsung Galaxy S series phones like S9 and S9+ with display similar to the infinity display with bent edges. HMD Nokia has been successfully able to make a mark of its own in the smartphone industry with innovative designs and OS mods.

BODY: The dimensions of 140.9 x 73 x 7.5 mm form a slim phone impression and a complementing ergonomic design. The phone is slightly bigger than the Apple iPhone X. Despite of a big housing, the display is limited to 5.5 inch giving out a screen-to-body ratio at 81%. Finger print sensor is provided at the back side of the phone next tot he rear camera. The phone is IP67 certified. The curved display is a delight to have but is not ergonomically good to taste.

DISPLAY: The Nokia 8 Sirocco comes with P-OLED capacitive touchscreen with curved edges. Images have a greater depth and clarity with 1440 x 2560 pixels, better than the iPhone X, slightly lesser than the Galaxy S9. This is possible due to greater pixel density at ~534 ppi. Not the best in the market, yet it fits the bill. Screen is secured by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 tech which protects the screen from scratches and provides fall resistance.

UNDER THE HOOD: The Nokia 8 runs on Octa-core (4×2.45 GHz Kryo & 4×1.8 GHz Kryo), something similar to the OnePlus series phones. The processor is fitted on a Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 chipset with Adreno 540 GPU, again similar to the OnePlus 5.

MEMORY: The phone, thanks to its large 6GB RAM handles multi-tasking pretty well. The phone comes with internal memory capacity of 128GB.

CAMERA: HMD Nokia has fitted the device with Dual 12 MP (f/1.8, aperture) + 12 MP (f/2.6, aperture) camera. Camera sports dual pixel phase detection autofocus tech and carries the Nokia Legacy Zeiss optics. Camera also has a dual-LED dual-tone flash. The Camera App is almost same as the Nokia Lumia series. The dual camera delivers depth in images but it isn’t comparable to the Google Pixel or the iPhone. The secondary camera is a mere 5 MP camera (f/2.0, aperture).

BATTERY: The Nokia 8 does not come with a 3.5mm headphone jack and it has a Non-removable Li-Ion 3260 mAh battery. The phone does has wireless charging feature. The phone battery lasts a day even with frequent peak usages during the day. Office and personal Mails, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Duo calls, 1 hr talktime, 1.5 hrs HD video playback, Bluetooth headset on LTE network lasts me a day.

The Nokia 8 phone is a marriage of Premium Build, pure Android OS and a phoenix-like brand name.
